I bought one of these in perfect condition for $250 mislabeled as a K31, mine is only #2370. Took me a very long time to find the bayonet with the 15mm muzzle ring. The quality of the rifles is incredible, unlike really anything else.

It would be cool to see all of these milsurp rifles on paper for grouping comparisons. I have two Mosins right now, a 91/30 and an M44 which started my milsurp collecting. Your few videos with this rifle have made me want to find one now. That straight pull bolt wold have been a great advantage against other bolt actions of the day.

Never understood why starting with the Model 1896 the Swiss cut the magazine capacity in half. Unlike most armies of the time, the Swiss had already been using repeaters as their standard-issue rifles for decades, so they didn't have the generals stuck in the "OMG they'll waste ammo" mindset. And it's not as if the 12-round magazine extended low enough to interfere with prone firing.
@ThePolishGuy1989
@ThePolishGuy1989 10 лет назад
Sorry for the late reply, but if you're still wondering, I have read that the reducing the capacity down to 6 rounds made the rifle lighter and easier to handle, and since the shorter magazine was almost flush with the stock, it allowed soldiers to hold the rifle closer to the gun's balance point. I also had my doubts, but it turns out the magazine reduction did actually make prone shooting easier.

I was at a gun store today and i saw that gun. Good condition, cheap too, but it used an odd round that is very hard to find and that was the only reason why i wasn't on my knees begging my Dad to get it. It cost $200 which is less than most of the military surplus rifles we have. I'm still weeping at the fact that we didn't get it.
@colonel_kipplar1911

Forget about this comment, after doing a bit of research on this gun i rushed to my Dad, told him we made a mistake, he told me to ask mom, she was okay with it, we rushed back to the gun store we found it, and bought it.

I shoot four different Swiss straight pulls. My K-31, m1911, and m96/11 all shoot sub m.o.a. out to 300m using GP-11. I have a list of 1889s to inspect at Simpson's, but I was having a hard time finding a decent source for reload data for the 1889, so I haven't made a purchase.

Awesome vid Eric, makes me even more excited to get my brass ordered to do up some loads for mine. I'm just curios did you check under the butt-plate on it, it wasn't uncommon for there to be id tags put under there similar to dog tags. I checked mine and all that was under there was the date of manufacture, July 15th 1892.

Eric, what OAL do you end up with for this load? I have the same rifle and have been experimenting with the same projectile. With the gas check seated to about the base of the neck I get an OAL of 2.953". I'm curious if this is close to what you used. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

What a strong extractor on that bolt. Those cases really fly!
@pfootball6363
@pfootball6363 7 лет назад
I've got a k31. I'm not sure how similar the extractors are on them but it ejects pretty violently. it will actually dent the mouth of the case just from the ejection. of course that also has to do with how hard you pull the bolt back but unless you're really easy on it it dents cases

I live in Switzerland. When I received my 1889 from wife`s family I was warned not to use GP11 as the pressure is to great. This was repeated my gun dealer in Zurich. Why tempt fate. Perhaps the rifle can take 5k shots, but what If it blows up on the 5001st shot? That is a risk I am not prepared to take as I don't want to end up in hospital if I`m lucky having bolt fragments being pulled from my face........safe shooting.

nice review. I purchased a "1889" it seems to be not the same and after looking at it the barrel has been chopped. I wonder if they shot the 7.5X55 through it and blew the barrel out. Excellent video. It’s not pointed out but you can’t use K31 specific dies for the 1889. Which is good because the $30 Lee dies for 7.5x55mm (1911 or K11 specs) works fine.

Most surplus rifles give you 3"-5" groups, but some are better or worse. For me, trying to shoot bull's eyes with them is usually an exercise in frustration since most of these guns are designed to hit a ~20" wide man torso.
