I tried for 1,300 miles, but a loud exhaust isn't for me, so I ride up to Joe from ‪@TheWurks‬ to switch the exhaust back to standard, as well as taking a look at his current projects, including a Royal Enfield 350 and a Honda project bike.
And we go through the upgrades done too the Bonneville.
Thanks to Chris from www.ultimatetwinperformance.co.uk for helping with knowledge and parts.

Use earplugs! Hell you should use them even with quiet exhausts because what is a major source of tinnitus in motorcycling is not the exhaust, it is the wind. It may not feel like it because it is a steady, pink noise like, hum but in reality in highways the loudness is way above the threshold that eventually causes hearing damage and tinnitus. When you are bobbing around town, it is fine to go without but when you are traveling anything further and especially on highways, please use earplugs.

You need to make the bike the most enjoyable for you, no discussion here. But even with the quiet exhaust, use EARPLUGS. Many modern/retro helmets have bad sound isolation and the constant wind buffeting will have the same damage effect of using a loud exhaust without earplugs.

Thousands of people suffer hearing damage riding loud motorcycles and pay for it later in life. A loud motorcycle doesn't only affect the rider; everyone has to put up with the racket. Major changes to the engine (air intake exhaust, sprockets, etc.) need proper adjustment. Politicians only need a few bad examples to pass more restrictive laws for everyone!

However, on my first 4 hour trip down a motorway they came off immediately upon my return and replaced with the original Honda exhausts that thankfully came with the bike. Have to agree , have riden and loved motorbikes for 26 years and have sometimes fitted quiet 'after market' exhausts..mainly because I was curious about the effect on the handling and the hype ...but I also live on a road approaching great twisty biking roads and the amount of hot hatches and bikes running SILLY loud exhausts that disturb everyone inside the house and we can still hear literally a mile up the road when they open it up is just ridiculous ...and it seems the ones warming up like Rossi sometimes doing well over 60 in a 30 outside my drive mostly run loud pipes as well...that stuff makes most of my neighbours hate motorbikes and hot hatches. At some point these inconsiderate people will make noise cameras and fines a new and common form of council revenue generation...some riders just need to be more considerate or keep it for the track days.

I don't like loud exhausts either. I did a biking holiday last year in France with my son. We had a great time. But his (wonderful) Suzuki GT 380 (46 years old) has extremely loud exhausts. Every time he started the engine it sounded like World War 3 had started! I was on my 1988 BMW K75. I couldn't hear my own bike! However, we had a great trip, and his bike drew a lot of attention wherever we parked up. And all credit for him for completeing such a trip on such an old bike. He lives near Glasgow, rode to Plymouth, ferry to Santander, Spain (where I met up with him), then through the Pyrenees to France. Then the same return journey. All on a 380 cc 2 stroke bike. I love your original exhausts. Bike sounds fabulous. Good decision.

Yes, twice in the last 12 months I've encountered the Irish 'just come off European ferry and my card won't work and need food for my son and onward petrol' scam at Woodall Services northbound on the M1 and fell for it the 1st time late on a Saturday evening, when he had his son with him, and stupidly parted with £20 (though he was pushing for £40). It was the same guy I spotted 6 months later, on his own and I pre-warned a couple of nearby drivers that he then approached unsuccessfully and noticed when he had no joy returning to a large newish BMW.

I think almost all riders have a limit to their acceptable noise level. I also think it is true that term "loud" is very subjective. What is loud for one may be acceptable to the next rider. There isn't a absolute right and wrong across the board and for every occasion. I have several different exhaust systems for my Thruxton R. The loudest one is great for land speed racing but way too loud for hours of riding for almost anyone. I don’t think the tors Freddie had are too loud even for longer rides for most riders but if it is for Freddie then changing them is the right choice.

Oh yeah, always wear earplugs. I'm an audio engineer and learned a long time ago that instantaneous loud noise the ear can recover. The road noise and wind noise is a killer long term. The ears have no defence for it. Helmets believe it or not make it worse as they magnify the frequency of the helmet and it goes strait into your ears.

If you don't use it already, you should try riding with protective earplugs, like Alpine MotoSafe. You shouldn't use regular earplugs. Joe keeps calling Freddie's Bonnie an SE, but I was under the impression it was the non-SE version (to be one it would come from factory with dual clocks with the dash lights arranged in a diamond pattern between the speedo and the tacho , brushed aluminum engine side covers, embossed tank badges, and the side panels would have the SE insignia bellow 'Boneville', which in this one were replaced by Motone's ). Can anyone confirm this? Also, @ 18:28, for potential buyers, any air-colled bonnie 865cc starting 2011 (maybe a few in 2010 as well) will have a CAN-bus. The easiest way to confirm this is if the clocks are analog (non CAN-bus) or if they have a digital odometer and are branded VDO, they will be a CAN-bus model. There are less year models of the non-CAN-bus versions, unfortunately.

Mines a 2010 model and like Freddie's it came with a single dash gauge i.e. a Speedo but it was all digital so a twin clocks upgrade was a simple job as replacing the mounting bracket and buying/installing a OEM rev counter and hooking it up with the existing wire connector. Literal 5 min job - took me a while to source a suitable 2nd hand tacho though to as Jo said, parts are starting to get harder to come by.

Nice videos but now that I'm invested (very good 👍) i also want to complain a little (soz). I want to see lips moving and what he's pointing out. I know almost nothing about bikes btw. You're guerilla vid also mentioned nothing about the engine other than it's cc. I want to buy an Enfield because I heard them in India and absolutely love the sound, but unlike you, I'd ruin it and cover the body in those caged panniers and leg guards that they have. So cool. Can you tell us more about the 500 classic please, I want the 1 cylinder sound but motorway use. The Himalaya reviews give a poor performance, long gear shift; even the new one. I've the 2002 790cc T100 all standard other than an 18 tooth front sprocket (they came with a 17 tooth) and on longer runs I get 64 MPG with full panniers, so I can get the best part of 200 miles from a tank before hitting the reserve.

There's no shame in avoiding tinnitus Freddie. Look after your hearing, as you can't repair it when it goes bad! Definitely consider earplugs at least, even with a quiet exhaust...

What mileage was your Bonnie getting before the Stage 1 mods Freddie? Cos that much increase is getting into "will pay for itself" for mine thats getting about 100 before the light comes on! (I know we say that about ever mod but there is some actual truth to this one...)

I had a Vance & Hines short shots exhaust system on my Harley for more than ten years and got tired of its noise (specially on longer trips covering around 1000mi or 1600km). Went back to the original exhaust and could not be happier. At first some fellow Harley (and even non Harley) motorcyclists said to me that I've "ruined" my bike but now (around two years after the reassemby of the original exhaust) I've seen some of those same critics doing quietly (pun intended) the same thing I did. Best regards from Brazil. 🛣🏍☮️

Agree re quiet exhausts. Went back to standard exhausts (or close to it) on my BMWs and even the little Monkey. Anything more than a few miles can get very wearing with a loud exhaust. Also attracts the wrong sort of attention.

One reason why I love my Street Twin is the exhaust sound not loud but not so quite either, its just right. A nice sounding exhaust is nice but obnoxiously load will just give you headaches after an 1hr of riding.

I don't like loud exhausts either, Freddie. When buying aftermarket pipes I have always gone for road legal options from well known manufacturers. The end result is often a deeper tone, better sound and maybe slightly louder than stock. This makes riding more of a pleasure and not tiring over longer distances.

Finally someone had the guts to say it. I've got industrial deafness. Loosing your hearing to loud exhausts is just plain dumb just because you want to make some noise and sound like a bad ass ! Pulsed noise is the worst thing you can expose your ears to. Not only that it's exhausting on a long trip. We get weekend warriors ripping through our village on the weekend with their illegal non stock exhausts. Nobody thinks their hard ! Just obnoxious. Performance tuned pipe's should reduce noise not increase it. Biking is hard enough on the body as it is without destroying one of your most valuable senses.
@laz1go286
@laz1go286 3 месяца назад
You need to wear quality earplugs Freddy! The pain you feel in your ears is not neccesarily due to the exhaust sound, the wind noise is much more damaging to your ears. The exhaust gives character and and it's safer in traffic too. In my experience anyway.. But of course you're free to do whatever you want..

As a lad loud was brilliant. We all had reverse cone megaphone so called silencers which were so loud I could hear my mate on his BSA Starfire coming over to my house changing gear from several miles away.. Now loud is just plain annoying and unnecessary and fully get all those who would give us dirty looks whenever we rode around. Freddie played the long game and realized if Monika was going to sit there for hours and hours riding over to Amsterdam he'd better get the silencers sorted before they go.. Whilst I get the need the front brake disc just doesn't suit the bike, it seems too modern too 'racer on the road' for the overall look. Apart from that Jobs a good'en A joy as always
