In today's video I talk about my experience switching over to MacOS after being on Windows for pretty much my whole life. I talk about some of the features that I feel make the Mac experience so appealing, why I actually moved over to Apple's OS, and also some of the things that I don't necessarily care for about the Mac Workspace.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to say thank you for all the love this video has been shown and also for the helpful tips regarding my switch over to MacOS! I also wanted to just clarify that while I have "switched" to Mac for the majority of my day to day work, I'm still using my PC on a near daily basis to play games. I still love both platforms I'm definitely gonna keep enjoying the strengths that both Windows and Mac have to offer!

Also, if you don't like having the full screen view using built in tiling, if you hold the option key you can snap a window to the left or right of the screen.

Why always speaking of lack of integration with Windows when...you are using an iPhone. I could not leave without a good integration between Windows and my phone. That is why (among other reasons) I have Android phone. And I do the SAME that between iOS and MacOS NATIVELY without installing additional software. What about the comment on installing or uninstalling software? You take them from the Store and you just click on install like on the iPhone. And a long press and uninstall like on the iPhone. It cannot be any simpler than that.

@@venomc3127 thanks for this tip. As All around filmmaker talked about, I'm in pretty much the same position. I've always refused to buy any Apple product out of the principal of them charging way too much money. But bought my very first Macbook pro last August and never want to go back. Also during then and now, I bought myself an iPhone 12 Pro, just because of the airdrop functionality. That is such a breath of fresh air.

I commented this on another channel, but we gotta stop treating Macs as a curse and windows pcs as a curse, just because they are different and the companies are competitive, doesn't mean we have to be, Macs have the pros and cons and so does windows, in the end the learning curve is the same wether you a lifelong pc or mac user switching over to both sides. I just love that we have these two great OS that if used together can give us everything we need and want

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but there is a paid feature called BetterSnapTool that’s 3 bucks less than a cup of coffee and it allows for the windows snapping for apps. Infinitely better that the current Mac app viewing options. Makes my Mac unusable without it imo, def worth the price.

As a part-time win developer I might argue on your speech about the app installation. I can dive really deep into this difference but I will try to be as short as possible. There are only 5-10 types of macs that are running the latest macOS (I’m talking about MBAir, MBPro, iMac, etc.). Each of them is sharing almost an identical processor. The Xcode is also only available on Mac (this is a program to code programs on Apple devices). So basically macOS developers can build their soft on their machines and distribute the pre-built app. With windows, you will never know what processor will be installed in the pc so this “long installation” is basically an app build process. That’s why windows is way more popular but way slower.

Great video mate. I wholeheartedly appreciate both OS for what they offer and it all comes down to personal use case. I too have been a life-long Windows user and I used to think that MacBooks were overly expensive and limited until I tried the M1 Air and I was blown away by what a thin & light notebook is capable of. I wasted no time in recommending and getting my best friend to switch over to the same specced MBP as yours, since he is a music producer and immediately after switching he was quick to point out how smooth, fast and bug-free the whole process is now. As a gamer, I will personally still stick to Windows but I wholeheartedly standby the Apple Silicone.

To have every finder window snap all files to the grid go to the right click menu and choose show view options set that window up as you like it and then choose set as default and every folder will be organized the way and size you prefer. Snap to grid should be a default but it is MacOS which uses the Unix/BSD philosophy of 1 program 1 task so it is up to you to choose what you prefer.

I'm pretty set on getting a macbook soon in a similar situation to you as a windows user all my life. So far it's seemed to me that the best option is just to own both. Even if that takes time to save - being able to have a good PC to game on and use all the programs windows has to offer is a must at this point - and windows PC's are outstanding with price to performance. Macs however win the laptop field by far. It also feels good to have a machine for personal and entertainment and one that works and looks different for getting things done. Thanks for the video man, summed up the points from someone in a similar mindset to myself and helped solidify the decision.

I myself was a windows user since the age of 5, from W95 to present, and having my first macbook air m1 way back 2021, spurs a lot of questions, there were pros and cons, but one thing you can't take away from them was the trackpad and its build quality, apple sure does treat you on the aluminum unibody that you can't even compare to laptops at the same price point. another thing is that the trackpad gestures were just sooooo organic and good and well makes total sense, there were features you wish you had on a windows laptop. but as they say you dont game on a Mac, i still game on my gaming desktop but when it comes to document works, browsing and stuff, I find myself picking the MBA, ohh yeah, battery, I can just work with this thing the whole friggin day without plugging it in again to juice it up.

Great video! I personally switched to Mac 13 years ago, while going to college. I used Windows my whole life. My first contact with Windows was when my grandmother died back in 1998 and my dad bought his first PC. It ran Windows 95 and was great. Before graduating high school my mom bought me a desktop running Windows xp. Then while going to college I bought the biggest piece of garbage PC I’ve ever encountered. It was a Packard Bell laptop running Vista. And it crashed at least twice a day. Once it blue screened while typing an essay for a class. That was the last straw and tried to install Linux which I used on the Windows Xp desktop my mom bought me. But it wouldn’t install as my laptop was ‘tatooed’, something illegal now which locked you to a specific version of Windows which you couldn’t downgrade or install anything else. So I sold it on eBay and bought a white MacBook. Now I just bought a second hand M1 MacBook Air after using a hackintosh I put together myself for the past 5 years.

My journey is similar to yours when I made the leap from Windows PC to MacOS last year. I’ve own Apple products such as iPhone and iPad. I’ve been stuck in the Apple ecosystem for close to 10 years at that point. When it came time to purchase a new computer I decided to go all in with one ecosystem. It was definitely weird at first but glad I made the jump. It made things a lot easier such as accessing my photos, videos and messages.

I have switched from window to Mac OS for 2 years . I do love everything on Mac including its built quality, trackpad, display, and the battery life but what I missed the most on my window laptop is the shortcut since I spend alot of time with Ms.Word and Excel. I find shortcut on window is way better.

Cool video! I agree about MacOS security. It's a bit overbearing and not always obvious why apps and features aren't working (at least to a novice MacOS user). Also agree about Finder. It just seems way more clunky than File Explorer. I also love how you can middle mouse click on the File Explorer tab in the task bar to open more windows. Makes copying files across drives way easier, IMO

I’ve also just moved over to Mac from 30 years of PC usage.I will say that Stage Manager is more powerful than anything Windows offers, but it’s not as easy and requires a lot of setup, but once that’s done, it’s better than Windows. Took months for me to figure it out.

I've just been using Magnet and it has been working for my flow, I feel like I don't have the patience to fiddle with Stage Manager enough. One thing that actually annoys me and perplexes me is the fact you just can not rename workspaces. It's a whole process to hack around it and sometimes it doesn't work so you have to restart the app, you also need to disable some security features and because of that some apps from the app store won't run with the setting turned off. There is a way to turn it on and only disable some of the elements that you would need to run the hack but really, such a simple thing should already be implemented.

I’ve played a couple of pretty light games on the MacBook Pro and they run just fine. Minecraft for instance, runs perfectly smooth with very few performance hiccups. If your primary focus is gaming then I would go for a gaming laptop, the Razer Blade laptops have the same sleek design like what toy would find on a Mac, but with the specs of a gaming pc. Macs are certainly capable of some gaming, but the support for MacOS is still really lacking so you have very few options.

Thanks for the video and sorry to hear you had so many problems with your previous laptop. However, based on your other Apple purchases you are a perfect candidate for an Apple laptop to my way of thinking. My experience with Windows and Android products has been excellent so far. I very much admire Apple products, but I have not found a reason to switch from my Android smartphone or Windows PC. I must admit, Apple feels from my experience a very purpose designed set of products that meets many customer requirements. But when I review and compare Apple with other Windows and Android products available, Apple has felt to me to be limiting from design to features available to application availability. But Apple was superior in product integration and customer service. Though product integration is not exclusive to Apple anymore. More on that later. In my case, I needed to replace my laptop PC and I decided to include the Apple MacBook Air M1 (the Apple M1 was the most current model when I was looking to buy). The Apple MacBook Air M1 is a beautiful thin and light laptop with great battery life, beautiful display, great build quality and feels premium to hold. But once I reviewed and compared what I prefer in a laptop, the Apple MacBook Air M1 came up short. For me, there are features and designs I have come to think of as a must have in a modern laptop. My previous laptop was the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, a wonderful PC to own and use every day. When I compared my seven-year-old Windows PC with the Apple’s MacBook Air M1, I realized that I was giving up too much for what the Apple MacBook Air M1 has to offer. The Apple MacBook Air M1 is a wonderful 13-inch laptop for personal computing. But it was no match for the form factors, designs, apps, and features of Windows PCs. If your requirements are for a tried-and-true clamshell laptop design, then Apple and Windows have plenty to choose from. However, if you want an OLED display (in my case Super AMOLED), Multitouch display, Pen inking capability, convertible or 360 form factors, and to connect to any device, you simply cannot find an Apple product to compare with. When I compared my selection of premium designed Windows PCs to the beautiful Apple MacBook Air M1, the MacBook Air M1 remains a solid laptop, but with limited features. One of the key design advantages of the Apple Ecosystem is the product integration and convenience of the Apple iPhone iPad, Apple Watch and Apple Earbuds all communicating together. The Windows/Android products simply could not compete in this area of technology. Well, until 2021 when Samsung Galaxy announced the Galaxy Book Series of Windows PCs. Samsung now offers product integration for the Galaxy line of products which include smartphone, smartwatch, earbuds, tablet, Smart Monitor, Smart TV and SmartThings to link to a host of other products from lights to garage doors to security to appliances to heating and cooling. The Windows and Android ecosystem just received a hand up into the world of modern living for convenience and control. Over time I have upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, Galaxy Tablet, Galaxy earbuds, Smart Monitor and Galaxy Book Windows PC. I did not plan to buy into the Samsung line of products, it just turns out that way over time. My Windows PC experience has been in a word, fantastic. The PC brands I have used are Lenovo ThinkPad and Microsoft Surface and now Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 15-inch. All my PCs are still running today after years of service. I cannot say what Apple integration will be beyond their personal tech products. But what I have experience to date from Samsung is a very satisfying integration with Windows and Android products and the selection and availability of apps and peripherals that goes well beyond what Apple offers today. But in the end, I am with you, the best tech is the tech that works best for you. In my case it has turned out to be Samsung integrating the best of Windows and Android.

yeah, he was the perfect candidate and the bad luck he had with one Windows device just closed the deal.... I am an Samsung phone user (since 2011) and have both Macs (including M1) and WIndows PCs (but use Windows much more) and both iPads (including M1) and Galaxy Tabs (including the S8 ultra) but use iPads much more... I don't plan on getting another Samsung laptop, I think they are not great (for many reasons) and the weak link of Samsung ecosystem (and instead use a thinkpad as the main laptop). Overall I prefer Windows to MacOS, although I much prefer the efficiency and quiet operation of M1 devices

@@_Digitalguy I would be interested if you are willing to share your experience with the Samsung laptop you commented on. I have the Galaxy Book Pro 360 15-inch and it has been fantastic, especially in creating the hub for Samsung's ecosystem. The Galaxy Book Pro 360 has been excellent, but it is not perfect, and I have not experienced the perfect laptop from any brand to date. I cannot speak to apple laptops as I have limited experience with their products during evaluation prior to purchase of my Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360. I continue to be impressed with Apple products in general, but my positive experience and comparative evaluation of Windows and Android products has me always saying to myself, there is little to nothing Apple offers over Windows and Android. In fact, I always find Apple products offering less in features, design options, and performance for my use case and workflow. That said, every review of Apple products that I have read or watched gives Apple the best performance with battery life, efficient power and tight integration for hardware, software, and services. But I already have the best integrated experience with Samsung's ecosystem today and more when I compared it to Apple and Google. I guess at the end of the day, it comes down to what you need or want from your tech brand of choice. As long it meets your requirements that is all that matters.

One thing I always found annoying when I switched to Mac is you need an app for so many functions, and you either get free apps that look like garbage and have little options, or paid apps that require new versions every time you update the OS. Devs love Apple because they can nickle and dime the hell out of you. Also, multi monitor support was pretty atrocious. Aside from that, it's good stuff.

Also, I've had to acquire just as many, if not more windows apps to do simple stuff as I ever have on Mac, so maybe we just do different things :)

Good video, and you are so right to switch. I’ve been a Widows user since 1999 with Windows 98. Always had desktops. When I had a website, my webmaster taught me how to build my own web pages. So, I got a high end Dell desktop with Windows XP pro. Had that computer 10 years, when hard drive died. Cause Dell was so reliable, I bought another high end Dell with Windows 7pro, with 2T hard drive. First off, I usually set up my own computers. This time I got lazy, and had a computer guy set it up. Not long after I got it, Windows screen kept on going out on me. Computer guy took tower, told me Dell didn’t put in enough power supply for that drive. He changed it, but other things acted up. Finally at barely 2 years, hard drive died in 2017. Dell wouldn’t replace it. I wasn’t going to buy another expensive 2T drive. Computer guy held on to tower. I didn’t bother to fix it since I no longer have a website. Now I’m in senior housing studio apartment. I got the iPhone 13 pro. My lawyer said I should really get a laptop. After the last experience with Windows, having iPhone, figured a MacBook Air would be compatible with phone. I have the M2 MacBook Air coming. After watching a ton of videos on here, I upgraded to 16 gigs of ram, and 512 SSD storage. I stuck with 8 core GPU, since several videos said not allot of difference with the 10. I’m not a gamer or graphic designer, so didn’t need the pro. I’m going to subscribe to Photoshop. This is my first laptop, so will be a learning curve. I’m excited to get it, I like that it’s light and thin.

I will say Windows and Android integration is getting pretty good, and thanks to things like the Phone Link app and Nearby Share for windows, I can seamlessly send files to my computer, message, take calls (this one has been a bit finicky), etc. My one complaint has been the seemingly poor Bluetooth range I've been getting on my earbuds, but I suspect it's an issue on their end as it happens with my iPad pro as well.

Visual code, etc. I see no reason to mix and match. If I want Linux I use either hyper-v or WSL and if I test a website I'm not sure of I use Windows sandbox which is a containerised version of Windows. I close it deletes simple. It’s gotten so bad that, even though my computer is completely usable while charging, it cannot last more than 20mins off charger, and is consistently slow and jittery. I’d love to hear how your Mac fares, especially after the heavy use yours seems to get.

Macs generally last longer than a PC. Be it a MacBook, an iMac or any form of Mac. Sure the speed and battery life will degrade as years pass by, but not in the rate similar to any Windows laptops. For battery, specially with the Apple Silicon M Series chips, battery life is nothing short of phenomenal, to the point that no other Windows laptops can reach. 10-12 hours screen time in one charge? Yeah you got it. You also get the full power when you're using the battery, no throttling Whereas on Windows laptops, the CPU and GPU performance drops 30-50% when you're not plugged in

I'm exactly in the same situation. It took me months to adapt my Macbook. Like someone said in the comments, you have to use a lot of 3rd party apps. Crappy free ones or pay and pay and pay for every tweak. This is what I changed: - 3rd party: Clipboard history - 3rd party: Invert mouse scroll (different direction than the trackpad) - 3rd party: Map mouse buttons. Trackpad is great but mouse support isn't. - 3rd party: Set specific areas for snapping windows - Finder is awful. Column view is Ok but not perfect. photos management there is just bad. Thank God for the space bar to preview them. I needed a 3rd party app to organize photos and edit. Windows is much better for file management and photos. For example you can't hide file extensions because lots of files have a check box to show it overriding the system configuration to hide them. Or why can't I delete a file by pressing the delete button? - 3rd party. The red x on the windows doesn't close the app when you close all of them. You have to use cmd+q or tweak that with an app. - office and onedrive integration is Ok but not as good. If you work with big companies you need to use all that a lot. It can't even save pdfs from word or PowerPoint correctly. - security is just excessive. Like you said it took me an hour of password inputs, a paid app and modifying the kernel to allow me to read ntfs drives. And you have to changes lots of security settings manually for almost every new program. - external monitor management is lackluster. - I think the keyboard has one too many modifiers. Shift, FN, control, option, Cmd... It's just confusing when to use one or the other for a shortcut. - took me a while but found an International keyboard setting to use less keystrokes to write some characters I needed. Windows has it available as default. Needed an app to install a new keyboard distribution. - why don't the just implement CUT (cmd+x) system wide? - uninstalling a programs leaves a lot of crap laying around the os. - I reeeeally miss touching the screen - gaming is non existent. That said I'm sticking with Mac after using windows for 30 years. - battery is superb. i leave the charger at home. - The ecosystem is amazing - build quality and speed is great. - the silence and coolness allowed me to use it as an actual lap top again.
