I live less than a mile away from our government building. I see politicians in public transportation, in restaurants, on the street. We had presidents that used their bike to go to work. As we are a semi-direct democracy (we vote 4 times a year - every three months - on the most important bills) and we have proportional representation (we elect parties and their ideas, not people) the politicians are not so important. Most of the people do only now some names and wouldn't even recognize them.

Yup. I grew up in a house with some serious hardware: Machine guns, hand grenades, pistols, normal submachine guns. But I also knew why they were there: Both my parents had been in the resistance during the nazi occupation and they did not want to be caught empty-handed again. We never worshipped that kit. Like the Swiss, we knew it was there. Period. Not for personal protection, though - we had two great danes. They were a hell of a lot more efficient than a pistol.

cubix626 it is, the current ones are around sometimes too. But I guess explaining that would not make sense in such a piece.
@Widestone001
@Widestone001 5 лет назад
@@thekatanaist The president here in Switzerland is one of 7 equals in the federal council. They all are the head of a specific department, much like a CEO who answers to the owners of the company. In this case, the owner is us - the people. In referendums the 7 members of the federal council have their vote like everyone else, but nothing more. Granted, they make the policies that the people then decide on, giving them a measure of power - but nothing like in the U.S.A. (where the power, as we've been learning lately, is also more spread out than I thought...) Um, back to the presidency. That's mainly an additional job that rotates yearly, every member of the council gets to be president if they manage to stay long enough. Every 4 years all members need to be re-elected, which is mostly a formality. But if an individual councilor screwed up in their 4 years, they may well be replaced. The important part is that the president represents Switzerland as a whole, not their own agenda. There is always a bit of wiggle room there, but not very much as far as I know. So, Trump has happened here too a couple of years ago. The differences were that ours was highly educated and actually knew his stuff and that his views, which were more on the extreme right, were watered down significantly by the rest of the council. Then he got thrown out after his first 4 years. The big political scandal was that parts of his party broke off to form a new, more moderate splinter which still exists today - 12 years later. And nobody talks about that anymore because there is no need. :-)

It's not a question if you have guns or not - it's about how you treat them. Obviously a polpulation high on narcotics with smuggled guns isn't going to follow any rules. But that won't change by you having guns - or not. You need to adress the problems. Change your socio-economic landscape and give addicts proper treatment, reduce drugs and support users, crack down on illegal guns. Maybe... just maybe... if people are well off, well educated and ... well (both mentally and physically) - maybe you wouldn't have so many people shot. Without a single change in gun laws...

The well-regulated militia came from the state providing their own military. At the time the federal government did not have their own military. The seating of the first Congress on 4 March 1789, legislation to create a military defense force stagnated as they focused on other concerns relevant to setting up the new government. President George Washington went to Congress to remind them of their duty to establish a military twice during this time. Finally, on the last day of the session, 29 September 1789, Congress created the War Department, historic forerunner of the Department of Defense. The War Department handled naval affairs until Congress created the Navy Department in 1798. So the Constitution was ratified June 21, 1788. The second amendment main purpose the states legals rights to protect itself. After the creation of the military the second amendment became pointless. Until a case in 2000s change the definition of the second amendment and what it meant to the people have the right to bear arms and protect themselves.

Aside the fact that Switzerland has a far better social welfare system to protect and help the weak, disabled and poor as well as no history involving slavery which lead to great inequality and injustice, the intention of owning guns was always completly different in these two countries. In America guns were historically always used to protect YOURSELF against criminals, natives, wild animals etc. So everyone has the mindset that anyone around is a potential threat. In Switzerland we own historically guns to protect OURSELVES against foreign powers. You trust your neighbours because the idea was never to use a gun against him but to fight side by side together against foreign powers.

If you actually looked as Swiss gun laws you would see that they are actually more lax than many US states such as California and New York For instance there are no restrictions on semi automatics. Also with about the same amount a paperwork required to get a gun permit in most states you can purchase a full auto rifle, a suppressor, and short barreled rifle or short barreled shotgun. All of which are heavily regulated and very expensive in the US, and outright banned in certain states.

@@brekezek Of course welfare state. Isn't that the very meaning of a country, to look after each other? We as a people decided, that everyone has the right to have a decent life. Healthcare is public, because people matter. Education is public and free, because braincells don't care about how much money you have.You get a pension, because you've contributed to our country, maybe as a full-time mother or a bank director. Everyone who works pays for our jobless-insurance, and everyone who looses his jobs has the right to use this insurance for 2 years. Because loosing a job should not be equal to loosing your healthcare plan or your housing. Still we manage to have a financial stability and a capitalistic system embedded in a social context. You let your own people die, because public healthcare is socialism. You miss out for the next Einstein, because poverty means no education and free education is socialism. You always talk about how much you care for eath others, but you're afraid to put this "love" for each other into compulsoring laws. I pay taxes in switzerland, and i'm glad i can. It means i earn enough to give something back. And it means that someone else who couldn't afford an education maybe someday will become the doctor who saves my life. I was born and grew up for a good chunk of my life in Switzerland, in other words I remember enough of how things were. Also I did and still do visit the country. Now I live in US and can say on the topic of guns how different views are. As a child growing up in Switzerland we were taught rules are there for a reason. Guns yes are dangerous but they are also for protection. Yes it's also for fun in certain games but like the former president said, it's about respect. Swiss acknowledge the potential harm that can be caused with this object and respect that. In contrast I find in the US I'm not quite sure if there is one way people are taught to view guns. Is it odd for me to say that I feel generally okay in Switzerland despite seeing the police or guards with their guns than in the US seeing the security where I feel slightly on edge/nervous at times. Maybe it has to do with the fact in Switzerland I see the gun but the guards are aware but relaxed (such as arms crossed but observant) vs in states where their hands are on the gun itself. There's a lot to be worked on with gun control. For some it has to be the acknowledgment that there is a problem. The next step doesn't have to be major but small changes are still a step. A country can't have the extremes of no law or too many laws as both would be either really dangerous or extreme resisting. I don't see guns being banned for the general public nor would I find it fair, after all if one wants a gun to be able to protect the,selves or for recreational use then they should be allowed. I do however belive if someone wants something that can cause harm they should be rules/laws and education on it. I could go on and have a long conversation on this but I'll cut it here as one thought leads to another.
