Brian, thanks for all the videos. As an HVAC/R instructor, I use quite a lot of them in class as well as on Teams. It certainly is useful to have additional information from Professionals like you that know not just the technical material, but also how to present it in ways that make it easy and interesting to understand.

Can you talk about how systems run in 110 to 120 degree temps like it gets here in Yuma Arizona. Often times you will get to a call and everything is working properly but if you wait a few hours you'll see the condenser fan motor quit from overheating even if the amp draw is very well within range. Many many failures in such extreme heat.
@briangc1972
@briangc1972 2 года назад
Most cond. motors are rated for 60˚C temps and after a couple years will do exactly what you wrote. Replacement is the the solution. A motor will work fine up to 100˚F and overheat at 105˚ or higher. Same issue here in Phoenix. I always ask the customer when they noticed the A/C quit. They usually say mid afternoon, that is the scenario you described, bad motor.

Excellent video. A/C only tech here that now designs stuff as an engineer in the field. Excellent video, and a great point about "stacking" refrigerant. Subcooling vs superheat charging is something green techs can't seem to sort out which one to do. Gotta make sure the filters are clean and the airflow is good if your suction is low, regardless of SH/SC. The basics first, then gauge up. I keep seeing measure quick in these vids and the electronic probes. They seem to be worth it more and more, even if I would only use them once in a while in place of my manifold and thermocouples.
@robertcherry4971

Low air flow and dirty evaporator are not the only reasons for low suction pressure. Your superheat and Subcooling can tell you have a low side heat transfer problem, low air flow or a restriction or low charge all reasons for low suction pressure. For example low suction with high superheat means you do not have low air flow, now if the sub cooling is low too… well we know it is low on charge. Superheat tells you how much refrigerant you have on the low side given the heat transfer capacity of the evaporator. Subcooling tells you how much refrigerant you have on the high side,given the mass flow rate if refigerant through the system.

How can I check a mini split/heatpump inverter system if its been overcharged? It has a TXV but how can I check sub cooling on a mini split system? Or what is the best way other than reclaiming the refrigerant and weighing it?

You forgot to mention the importance of proper airflow across both coils and the importance of having clean coils. I have seen systems with dirty coils that the previous tech assumed was undercharged and he added freon. He then added more freon. He then added even more freon. When I got the call, the reversing valve had hydrolocked and the unit would not go into cooling mode. I pumped out 42 lbs of freon from a system that the factory charge was 14 lbs; 28 lbs overcharged! I cleaned the coils and weighed in the charge and voila, the system worked perfectly for a couple years after. You should also mention that the ONLY 100% foolproof way to charge a system is to weigh out and weigh in the charge. It takes less time to weigh out and weigh in than it does to take a bunch of temp readings, add a little, wait for pressures and temps to stabilize, take a temp reading, add a little, wait for pressures and temps to stabilize, take a temp reading, etc. I've been a licensed HVAC contractor for over 22 years and weighing out the old charge will tell you as much or more than all those readings and do it in less time. The new guys are leaning too much on technology, aka apps on their phones, when the engineers who designed the system have already done all the hard work. Our job is simple when you stick to the basics.

If i 've got it right, i need 3 pressure gauges and 7 thermometers: 1 PG ant 1 T in front of the TXV for subcooling, 1 PG and 1 T in front of the compressor for superheat, ohne PG behind the compressor for head pressure, 1 T in front of and 1 T behind the condensor für Delta t (condensor) 1 T in front of and 1 T behind the evaporator für Delta t (evaporator). For 3 pressor gauges, i need 3 schrader valves. Right?
@briangc1972
@briangc1972 2 года назад
Or just use a recovery machine to pump out the freon, weigh it and then weigh it back in. Quicker and 100% foolproof. If you weigh in the charge and the unit does not cool correctly, then you know the real problem is something else.

Comp. Ampers go down when there is Liquid Line restriction? How

I recently came to a Rheem RPPL heatpump that is slowly building to high head pressure in heat mode (over 620 psi, then trips out) but appears to be charged fine in cooling. Checked all the "obvious" things, and no the backup gas heat is not operating at the same time. In cooling mode the SC is 11 degrees, SH is around 9-11 degrees. In heat mode the suction pressure is normal... it has an outdoor TXV and also a compensator. The SC in heat mode is 31 degrees and SH is 8. The indoor coil is clean, blower is clean, cap is good, and static pressure is .7inWc. Only thing I can think of is slightly overcharged? I have not been able to find anyone that can help me with answers on this. The manual nor data plate has specs for what subcooling should be and I know the indoor TXV has been changed in past by a different tech that is no longer at my company. Maybe he "rule of thumb" charged it for subcooling? Any insight would be extremely helpful.

If multiple techs have been working on this unit, it could possibly have different refrigerants in it? I do know weird things happen when those conditions occur. I went to a job that SEEMED like R-22. Only come to find out two hours later it had been switched MO-99. Found the sticker in the WORST possible shadowy crevice. Proceeded to place stickers in easily visible areas, and crossing out any mention of r-22 on that system.
@timrob0420

@@Niveous23 yeah I recommended pulling out all the charge, sweeping with nitro, pulling a vacuum, and weighing in a fresh charge and then "going from there". It's just a really wierd problem.

My thing is every call is so much different example went in today wi beer cooler not been ran for a month they turn it on yesterday notice it's not cooling owner "knows a guy" guy left gauges attached connected to a bottle of 404 has been like this the last year(as long as maintenance guy has worked there) then he calls for service says I think someone else beat ya to it bc it's doing good at 55f I say "nope you still have problems, if you dont want me to look im totally fine with it" unfortunately he says yeah id rather you check it out long story short cond was filthy cleaned it head comes down 45 psig throw some temp clamps on it now I find out I got 10f subcooling and 40f superheat (at the txv bulb) shove 7 lbs in system and did nothing but lowers my SH from 40 to 30 but lowers my SC to 7f adjust txv only to find oit it's non responsive. Come to the conclusion that when they turned it off and let it sit the txv locked up (yes I tried to free it to no avail tap run in and out hammer on it the works but nothing) a little part of me says put 3 or 4 more lbs in it but it's a 494 system in at I think 50ish/240ish and it's not changed after 3 lbs... so does the thing just need gas my sat on highside was 100f it was 80f ambient and box was at 50f and sat was at I think 20f) in this scenario do I add gas till I can get him a new txv and install or whatever someone might say. I'm 100% all ear if you wanna curse my name and wish death upon my first born I'm on board just "saturate" me with knowledge so I don't fuck up this bad again 😉
