T-case/Diff Fluid Change Mazda 3 Turbo

I changed the transfer case and differential fluid at just under 10k miles. I used the Mazda SG-1 fluid. Transfer case fluid had a little bit of aluminum swirls but that is to be expected for break in fluid. Rear diff was very clean, both magnets had no concerning debris on them. #mazda3 #mazda3sedan #mazda3turbo #skyactiv #transfercase #differential #awd

What could be damaged by an aftermarket oil? Considering it's around the same vicosity and it's oil actually made for transmissions and differentials. You mentioned TCC shudder but is that causing damage or just feelings.

This might be a dumb question but im new to working on my own car. Where and how do you refill both fluids? From the same plug they were drained? Thanks for the video
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 Год назад
The big drain plug pointing down at :12 seconds in is the tcase drain plug. The fill plug is further up on the side. 1:28 in is for the diff. Top open plug is the fill spot, the one below it is for the drain.

Another question for yah, does you car have any differential whine like some of the other turbo owners do? Is it something to worry about? Thanks!

No, my car, as well as all other 4th gens I've driven have been quiet. I have a few theories, but I haven't been able to test them because I haven't experienced the issue.

Whats your opinion on Mazda's SG-1 fluid? Some people on the online forums suggest using Royal Purple 75w-90 instead as they think the SG-1 fluid isn't great.
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 Год назад
I'll preface this with I have been in the auto industry for the majority of my professional career and specialize in drivetrain. I use SG1 specifically because of how good it is. I learned a long time ago to not get into fluid discussions online. It always ends bad. 😂

@@21mazda3turbo3 Appreciate the answer! I had my doubts when others suggested SG-1 is a "bad" fluid as it's been out for awhile and is still in use. Was just curious, thanks!

Do you also recommend the Mazda OEM trans fluid?
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 8 месяцев назад
@twistttwist yes I do. The other fluid that is worth considering would be Aisin FZ. I've seen a fair amount of TCC shudder on multiple cars introduced by other fluids that swapping back to factory FZ has remedied.

what are your thoughts on a GL-5 fluid like Red Line 75W90 for the T-case + diff on the Mazda AWD?
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 8 месяцев назад
I'm personally sticking with the factory fluid until I've seen sufficient evidence to try a different fluid. There are much better fluids than Royal Purple out there. Royal Purple does not recommend any of their fluids to replace the factory fill. If I were to swap to a different fluid, I'd personally run Motul or Amsoil Severe Gear in a 75W90.

How do you change the front transfer case fluid? Last time I went underneath the fill plug looked blocked by a bracket. The service manual seemed to indicate the need to remove lots of parts, more than I would comfortable removing in my gravel driveway!

@@benjaminlam4693 yes it will be worth changing the fluid. The transfer case is always turning and it only holds about 1/2 a qt. The fluid does get worked pretty hard.

@@21mazda3turbo3 out of curiosity do you happen to know what the recommended change interval is on it? I have 5k miles in mine just did the first oil change but I’ve been driving the piss out of my car.
@xemprino
@xemprino 6 месяцев назад
Hello. I just did my first rear different and transfer case oil change service ever, at 22.5k miles but car is like 4 years old. Differential oil came out pretty clean, I couldn't see the other though. However, in my country I couldn't get Mazda SG1 and it's hard to import oil on my own. I didn't know about alternatives and my mechanic told me they use Motul so I was ok it must be great, but now when they drained it already I saw the bottle was Motul HD, it's 80w90 and seems to be non-synthetic. Googling around seems like Motul Gear 300 75w90 would have been the best alternative to OEM. Should I be worried to be running non synthetic 80w90? I also read that at same viscosity rates the difference in fluidity varies from non synthetic to full synthetic oils so like 80w90 according to specs seem to fluid more at 40°C than the Gear 300. Would this oil mess up and break my Differential? What do you think I should look for unexpected changed behavior so I can go and change to another oil before I break my car? There's also Motul Motyl Gear 75w90 but seems to be more focused to transmissions. I'm scared of breaking things. What do you think?
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 6 месяцев назад
Motul 300 75-90 is a great oil. Discussing fluid viscosity can lead to going down a big rabbit hole, lol. A 75-90 synthetic viscosity will vary between manufacturer to manufacturer because viscosity rating is set up for ranges. You can have a "lighter" synthetic 75-90 and a "heavier" one, and you can have a conventional they is "heavier" still. If it were my car, I'd get a good synthetic in there vs. a conventional. The fluid capacity is not very big, and synthetics handle the heat put into the oil much better.
@xemprino
@xemprino 6 месяцев назад
@@21mazda3turbo3 yeah I know about the discussion that originates in some forums, not really into that stuff lol. I'm just worried this 80w90 non-synthetic would not handle the duty properly, at least for a few months until I get Gear 300

I changed both fluids at just before 10k miles. Both fluids looked great, I was just base lining. I'll probably change it every 20k miles just because the the amount of fluid is small in both boxes. It heat cycles a lot and maintenance is cheap.
