Anmol verma he is like everywhere..haha. for those who didn't understand, there is someone named x( see above in the main comment), he loves to give in depth analysis on the videos of tabla legends( especially on where there are Pt. Anindyo Chatterjee & Pt. Kumar bose.) To Mr. X , if you are reading this, go get a life.
It is a pity that harmonium maestro Tanmay Deochakke was overshadowed by the sarangi and hardly got footage., the excellent sarangi playing notwithstanding.
Tabla players need to stop using just a single dynamic mic like the shure sm57/58. While it sounds great for the tabla/dayan, the frequency cutoff at the low end is 200hz! The baya is usually tuned open to around 100hz, which is 10db down with those mics. That is a substantial bass rolloff. That's why the baya sounds so thin. I use a sm57 for the tabla and a large cap condenser on the baya, that is the only way to get the full range. Amazing performance though.
***** 57 and 58 are the same mic, except the 58 has the headbasket for vocals. 57's are the most widely used mic both on stage and in the studio. IMO they sound the best on almost any percussion. However, something needs to be conpensated for the rolloff. A low end shelf boost usually does it, or another mic pointed at the baya. And there are very good condenser mics for the price of 57's. Today you really don't need to spend much money on mics unless you are going ribbon or tube. I have some $700 Oktavamod condensers that sound as good as ANY I have ever heard, and without the mods would be half of that. The average person can still enjoy tabla very much without the bass, but if they heard it with the bass, they'd definitely hear the difference, like night and day.
Good point! I agree, would love to hear more..always! :) But probably to control feedback, 58s are great feedback avoiders and cheap too. They could maybe put a see-thru, thick glass wall between the mic/tablas and the PA to prevent feedback, but that might affect viewing pleasure. Another alternative is headphones for everyone performing with someone balancing their separate mixes and therefore no PA, so less chance for feedback.. but is also kinda a hassle haha.
Mr Hazra, please pardon me, I don't know what prompts you to say so. Even great as Ustad Amir Khan never sang all aspects of Khayal and that did not reduce the beauty of rendition anyway. Watching Panditji live is like watching Brian Lara or Sachin or GR Viswanath batting.
can we cut the track of harmonium on mix table ..? can we bring back home or at psychiatrik hospital this inconvenient people ..hence we could enjoy this amazing performance ......omg ..wtf ...
To all those, who are raising their precious eyebrows on my comment, I want to bring a closure to my thoughts. Do realize that anindo-jis legacy as one of the greatest tabla players will stay unblemished. However, we have heard the very best of Pandit-ji over the years. His tonal crispiness and balance, has banyan element very central to it alongside his unmatched right hand-work and fingering. Recently, I have been hearing the banyan aspect evaporating steadily, his son Anubrata probably has better banyan work to show nowadays. My personal observation though...apologies if it hurts anyone.
He´s 64 years old now and people loosing physical strength with the age. Zakirji is today slower and Anindoji still fast and clear like ever, just a bit less powerful, which is both fine.
Perhaps banyan comes out much better when you listen to live performance...as someone here commented the audio capture of banyan in live recordings has limitations and he has also suggested how it can be improved.. You can get a full flavor of banyan in studio recordings. Another comment.. with banyan as in the danyan tabla...it is the sweetness, melowness and blending with danyan that is important... Anindo ji certainly has that superb aesthetic sense......just sharing my views...no intentions of hurting anybody....
All of the Tabla players I listen from East to West.. Of india.. but no one sound like Zakir sahab ..there is something magic behind his fingers... Iam not fingering any body every body playes there own way...
Muslim log kahte hai table ko inhone ijat kia kya ye pakhawaj ki nakal nahi hai syahi world k kiss country is instrument me hoti hai arab me to nahi hoti.
