Motions of orange table in X and Y direction are controlled by two motors via a gear-rack mechanism of yellow omnidirectional (bidirectional) rack, pink and blue gears.
Advantage: both motors are fixed to the ground frame.

Like all interesting ideas it’s only obvious after you have seen it. I’m sure that this will plant the vital seed that helps someone innovate further along in a new direction. Brilliant!

It will be really difficult to maintain stability as gears are spur gears. Also cross motion (0,1,2) at 45 degree is very difficult I think. But it is possible I think.
@luke_fabis
@luke_fabis 3 года назад
It would be unstable except for the frame and linear rods constraining the motion.

Mr. Thang, can you make a ratchet system that allows a release of spring in fixed number of times? (Let's say 3 rounds and then it resets.)

How is there not interference? It seems like there would have to be at some speeds. Plus would servos be able to hand the two directions?
@luke_fabis
@luke_fabis 3 года назад
If the gear teeth are sufficiently wide, they’ll always be engaged with at least two table teeth. Moreover, the gear teeth don’t need to be fully seated between two table teeth to function, like you’d expect with a cam and follower. The point of contact is always going to be very narrow. As long as it’s manufactured to a tight enough tolerance, there’s no reason it couldn’t work as depicted.
@mrpoopybutt
@mrpoopybutt 3 года назад
@@luke_fabis the wider the gear teeth, the more interference there would be, it would have to move in a zigzag in real life application, and that would stress the motors too much
@luke_fabis
@luke_fabis 3 года назад
@@mrpoopybutt Interference implies a stoppage of motion. A longer gear tooth may increase friction, but that doesn’t necessarily equate to interference. Actually, quite the opposite, so long as you can overcome friction, a longer gear tooth would better stay aligned with the table teeth. With the right material and precise machining, the teeth could probably work just fine as a bearing surface when sliding. Also note that I wrote sufficiently long. Obviously there needs to be a balance, and a gear tooth that’s too long won’t be practical. But if a gear tooth is too short, it can snag as it travels across table teeth. You need to make sure it’s spread across several teeth to stay properly constrained.
@mrpoopybutt
@mrpoopybutt 3 года назад
@@luke_fabis yes but for the table to move without the extra friction, one gear would have to stop moving for the other to make its pass and it would go back and forth. In a practical sense, this woyldnt work for something that needs a fluid motion
@luke_fabis
@luke_fabis 3 года назад
@@mrpoopybutt Friction is going to be unavoidable, but if the gears are aligned and meshed perfectly, and if the whole assembly is rigid enough, there shouldn’t be a significant effect like you’re describing. If anything, it would wear a little more evenly if it’s constantly doing simultaneous X and Y moves. This is definitely not something that could be achieved on someone’s home FDM printer, but there’s nothing inherently infeasible about this design.

How easy is that omni direction rack gear cutting sir? Is it commonly done by all gear machiners?
@thang010146

Nothing special. It's a square rack. Its teeth are generated when cutting the tooth grooves from the two adjacent sides. A video showing how to cut the teeth for ordinary rack: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-83NMoghPN-A.html

it wouldnt because the plate is mounted along the outer rails, meaning that the gears dont have to touch the bottom of the plate when sliding

Mam wątpliwości czy jednoczesny ruch w obu osiach byłby możliwy. Czy ewentualnie piramidki nie powinny być stożkami. I have doubts whether simultaneous movement in both axes would be possible. Should the pyramids possibly not be cones?
@thang010146
@thang010146 3 года назад
Pyramids are better because the contact with the gears is linear while cones give the point contact.
