I was sitting in my study, measuring my table saw fence (yes, it is from an Evolution Rage 5S), when I saw your video! One problem I foresee, is that the fence splays by a mm or two where it is attached to the clamping mechanism, and I wanted to make the auxiliary fence longer than the standard one. UPDATE: I dismantled the fence and discovered that the aluminium extrusion had been really poorly cut. So, with a good amount of filing, I managed to get it to fit the clamp mechanism properly and have minimised the splay. Now for the auxiliary fence!

I had the same problem, the cut out on the alluminium wasn't flush, it had a ridge so I needed to sand it.

Good to know that there is a simplish solution to that potential problem, this info will be helpful to some of my viewers, thank you

Great video, well explained. Just one question, am I right in thinking you have not screwed or physically attach any of the pieces of the fence to the original fence, as such it is just locked in place by the rebate for the head of the bolt?
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 10 месяцев назад
Correct, however even the rebate for the bolt it's not necessary in my case as the friction fit is very strong. But in any other scenario I would recommend attaching it to your original fence. For example this Evo fence has got a t-track on top so you could utilise that. But as many saws there are that mamy types of fences

I don't know if my room is high enough to fit a fence like that 🤣, but a good addition to the saw 👍 I really need to get mine set up properly ... already replaced the crap insert plate with one made from laminate, but need to make a couple so one one is for 90 degrees and the other is for any angle. The problem I've found with the fence is that the extrusion is splayed apart by the part with the locking mechanism, so the start of the fence pushes the piece you are cutting out very slightly. I also need to adjust the stops for 0 and 45 degrees as they aren't set correctly!
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 10 месяцев назад
To set up the 0 and 45 degrees with the positive stops is dead simple specially when you have a magnetic digital angle finder box thingy. not sure about the other problem - could you send me picture when you get a minute to show the issue please ( if you want that is ).
@barry.w.christie
@barry.w.christie 10 месяцев назад
@@CasualDIY Always worrying when another man askes you for pictures 🤣... Will send you something later today Tomasz 👍 It's a bad design, they cut a big slot into the bottom of the extrusion to fit the clamping mechanism. compromising the structural integrity of the extrusion ... would've been so easy just to have a few mm off the bottom of that part so the tube didn't need to be cut!

Get a decent MDF and screws, unfortunately you have to be careful with MDF, not the greatest material

I have a question about MDF my friend if u have a minute to answer it.. Q. How do the screws hold up in the MDF? I thought that may be a problem to keep them from stripping out or loosening over time? I haven't used MDF without using glue also.. I noticed u put that sound proofing up on the garage door? Does it make a lot of difference? I have some of that so I might give it a try. I work out of a one car garage myself but I DON'T MAKE VIDEOS. I don't have the camera's and all that good gear u need to make the videos which is a major problem for me but I'm thinking about it once my skill levels improve greatly. I couldn't just jump in right now. I think it'd be fun for ppl to watch me make mistake after mistake when I'm doing something I've never done before but not for me atm.. LOL. Really enjoy ur videos man. I hope u can give me an answer about the screws into the MDF??
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 9 месяцев назад
Hi, 1- On some occasions that may be a problem but generally it will be fine. Most wardrobes are from MDF and then screwed together. It will depend on application I guess. 2 - Worth adding, it made a lot of difference to sound proofing but also insulation, got a video on that - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Vc5BtZopW-A.html 3 - Don't need cameras etc. Your phone will do, usually they got very good cameras. 4 - most important tip - Just start recording, don't look at other peoples opinions on your first 50 videos - these are for learning for you. RU-vid is not a sprint its a marathon. All the best mate

Huge fan of this channel, and all the mods to the Rage 5S! Especially as you seem like a "normal" casual woodworker without an airplane hangar-sized workshop. I recently killed my Rage 5S (don't ask!) and am in the market for a new table saw. I was always happy with the Rage 5S and despite the price rise, I think it represents good value. Should I take the opportunity to look at something else? Has any other table saw caught your attention?
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 7 месяцев назад
For me the choice is between Rage 5S which is about £300 and a cast iron top saw. Anything in-between is pointless as you can get the Rage to perform close to any saw in-between. Cast iron top on the other hand is the next level of progression I would recommend. Lumberjack or Axminster do have some solid options

Another good video Tomasz, I have the same table saw and I was hoping that this fence would sort out the issues that I have. For me, my fence can't be guaranteed to be parallel to the blade, I understand that the 2 bolts on the top offer adjustment but as the lever is lowered to tighten down the fence position it often moves. So your fence is good, better than just using the original but for me, sadly, I've lost confidence in the Rage 5s so I guess I won't be making this upgrade.
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 10 месяцев назад
There is a bolt at the back of the fence behind the black plastic cover. I think you can adjust the fit of the back shoe so it limits the movement

Another great video, I have been finding that the fence on the evolution saw is only square if I hold it in place while pulling down on the clamp, do you know if there is any adjustment in the fence ?
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 10 месяцев назад
Hehe I actually mention briefly the adjustment for the fence in this video😅 the two bolts on the top are the adjustment. Plus at the back where the clamp is there is a bit that holds the plastic jaw you can try to adjust that as well.

Love the fence upgrade Tomasz. I've been considering doing something similar but my rage 5s fence faces arent dead square to the table top. I guess I would need to shim the upright mdf pieces to get an accurate vertical fence, especially for cutting tenons. Have you come across the same problem with your saw fence?
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 10 месяцев назад
Mine was fortunately straight. What you can do is to make the fence few millilitres larger and then shim it in place or even hot glue it to the original table saw fence making sure its straight and true in every way.

Is there any reason not to add a second feather board to the fence opposite or after the blade to hold the cut piece in place?
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 10 месяцев назад
You can add another featherboard on the fence after the blade.
@paultolman2832
@paultolman2832 10 месяцев назад
Hi great video as usual! I would just like to ask if there is any reason why you are not using a blade guard on through cuts. I know this is the "fashion" in the US but as a retired safety inspector using a blade guard even in a "Non Work" environment really does have advantages. I have carried out many accident investigations obviously in the "work environment" and can confirm that the majority of serious hand injury come from inadvertent hand movement into the blade. Only my thoughts, you do what best suits you but please be careful as I enjoy your output.
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 10 месяцев назад
Few reasons, first of all its for the video so vierws can see what is happening and why. Secondly the original blade guard I got with this saw was more dangerous to use than using the saw without it. I made a over the blade cover but it doesn't fit my new setup so I need to make a new one 😅 So that's my main reasons.

@CasualDIY I tend to agree with you. My saw gets less use/love than your's, but I'm getting close to changing the blades and that was another reason for re-watching some of your earlier reviews. I think I'm fairly certain I'll be getting the 40/80 Saxton combo. Any thoughts before I click..?

@@iainrutherford184 Great choice for budget blades and they have the correct bore hole size. If you don't mind putting reducing rings then a good choice of blades comes from Trend, I was surprised how good they are.
