This case is rock solid (like other Pelican cases). ru-vid.comUgkx3jMFPw9QX_Iu4DNcjW-t9AZ4_iNhJzhE I paired it with the Master Lock 140T set of padlocks. The US Airways ticket agent that checked the case was impressed by how completely the latches were secured. The case has layers of removable foam cubes that can be easily adapted to the contents of the case and keep everything secure. After declaring its contents to the ticket agent, I was allowed to put this case in other checked luggage. Due to its size and black color, this helped insure that it wasn't misplaced by a baggage handler. TSA was (apparently) happy with the packaging as well. If you plan on flying with more than one of the main items, I would recommend buying a larger Pelican case and just transport the case as another piece of checked luggage.

I wish the slider was spring loaded so you didnt have to manually lift the mirror. It would just pop up on its own once the magnet disengages the lock.
@kawivloger
@kawivloger 10 лет назад
I wonder if you could just mount it upside down so it would just drop open and STAY open sin stead of having to hold it open?
@fattywithafirearm
@fattywithafirearm 10 лет назад
kawivloger That could work in some circumstances. I wouldnt want it to slam against something as it drops if there is a little table or something below it.
@kawivloger
@kawivloger 10 лет назад
you could put a small piece of rubber inside each track so the wheel would hit it when it bottoms out which would make it quieter and should prevent excessive wear and tear from impact

I don't think the magnet is strong enough to unlatch if there is pressure on the latch. Notice how when he shows the magnet unlatching it moves slowly. I don't think it would work under spring tension, nor if if was mounted upside down
@rollcall_network

I like it as a hidden compartment, but IMHO think the lock needs to be redesigned or removed all together. I just foresee all the fumbling around to unlock the safe during a stressful event, and trying to hear a quiet "click" from the lock when someone is pounding on your door would be challenging. But ya definitely got me thinking sootch, another great vid!
@Gouveia100
@Gouveia100 10 лет назад
Agreed. The locking system is kinda dummy considering how dificult its is to find the magnet, lift the mirror and pick up the weapon. A small press button would be faster and instead of a lfit up door opening down or sideways seems more natural. But the general idea is great.
@JonathanMurray
@JonathanMurray 10 лет назад
The originals had no locks - that was added by demand, and from the website they no longer seem to sell them without a lock. I *think* you can just leave the key/magnet in place, though - leaving it "unlocked". You can also buy just the insert and hang your own mirror/poster/picture over it.
@Ballistic_Turtle
@Ballistic_Turtle 10 лет назад
Oscar Gouveia When installing, just tape/remove the locking mechanism if you don't like it and/or have no need for it. However, if you're buying something like this, you probably would prefer some sort of lock on it. Everyones' needs are different though, of course. Personally I would probably just install some sort of key hook or something on the same plane as the lock to remind me exactly where it is. So for example: I'd install a key hook hanging off the front of that shelf-base, right in the middle, to give me a straight line plane with the magnet lock being only a few inches behind the key hook. Maybe a small, color matched, shelf divider or something similar would work too. Unless something better is invented by the time I save up enough money to get a bunch of these, I'll likely have these things all over my house lol. Might even modify a few to go further into the wall and build another contained area around the front of the original mirror part to use as a fake medicine cabinet or something. Anyone can open the front and use it as a normal medicine cabinet but it has a "false" back (the original gun compartment). Lot's of options when you start making holes in the wall lol.
@Kparris7
@Kparris7 10 лет назад
Probably just glue a magnet to the end of a flat stick then screw the other end into the bottom. That way you can just rotate the stick around to get it into place, kinda like how an ar-15 safety works but attached to the bottom of your cabinet.

Quick tip! Paint tha magnet all white color! You don't need a gun picture on it what possibly make the bad guys associate to some access way to your guns! If this is all white than look like a part of the door. ;)

For a stronger boxed wall safe secure logic wall safe 20710 is a good choice. You can build a simple hinge on one side to allow a swinging hinge picture to hide face of wall safe when not in use. Than incorporate to child locking latch to keep picture frame locked until needed.

The magnet adds complication to something that needs to be quick to access. Also the lack of a pneumatic gas cylinder to hold the unit in the open position is a major negative. I like the idea of the coffee table that hides weapons, much better than this product.

A Kitchen Drawer hung on the wall with a mirror on top. Genius!
@mtslyh
@mtslyh 10 лет назад
Nice idea but two problems: 1) It needs a slide lock that keeps it open as you are accessing it. You are clearly having problems getting the gun because you are trying to hold this thing open with one hand while reaching for the gun. The mirror is heavy and requires significant effort to hold it open. 2) as others have said, the magnetic lock needs to be removed. Personally, I'd just remove the catch and leave it unlocked. If the mirror passes for a standard mirror then there should be no reason to have a lock on it since guests shouldn't expect it anyway. If you have kids and are worried about them getting into it because they know it's there then that magnet isn't going to do any good anyway. They'll just grab the magnet off of the door or just get themselves another magnet from somewhere else in the house.

Seems to me any competent do it yourself type could make something like this rather easily. I'm not in love with the magnet idea, since if people know about these ANY magnet will work if it's strong enough. There has to be a better way to make it both secure but readily available. In my case, with no children around, I can think of many ways that would keep it hidden from the gun grabbers but not from me or my lady in the event of a real need.

I had to take a moment and say thanks for the well done review. I've read through most of the comments here and they are pretty much just Trolling you. The product speaks for itself and does a wonderful job. Based on your review I am more likely to purchase a product from them. To all the people saying "Criminals will see the video and find it" I rebuttal that with, you think they're that smart to begin with? I mean they're breaking into peoples homes with no idea who is behind the door and how they are ready to protect themselves (you'd be on the receiving end of my 1911). Even seeing this video would not lead me to look behind every Mirror out there, that's just stupid. This product is a great alternative to leaving your gun in the nightstand, in a drawer, or any other place that is totally unsafe. Well done!

Jake McCoy It's not about being cute, sometimes a safe is not a quick means of accessing my weapon. What if someones at the door trying to break in? I could EASILY grab my gun and defend myself. Way better than having to run to my safe, hope I hit the code correctly and then act accordingly. Plus, you really think they're wasting time looking behind mirrors? Ha! I'm willing to bet you don't even own a firearm.
@applepiebetty
@applepiebetty 9 лет назад
You don't have someone in your house right now planning any crime, because if you did.. you would find that opening that box in 5 seconds will exceed that time immensely. If not hidden in the wall somewhere, it is possible to take it with them or just break into it when they see it in a burglary and no one is home. Now you have added to the illegal guns on the street and feed the complaints of gun hatters.

I'm not trying to nit pick, but do you have a link to some legitimate studies about whether home invasions and home break-ins are really on the rise? My understanding is that all violent crime is WAY down since about 1990. I'd like to learn more about this anomaly, if it's real. A couple news clips of particular incidents or anecdotal stories about a friend of a friend (AKA old wives tales) don't hold much water with me. Do you remember where you saw actual numbers? Thanks.
@s13rr4buf3
@s13rr4buf3 10 лет назад
To see what I mean by this enormous drop in violent crime in the last 25 years, look here: www.statista.com/statistics/191219/reported-violent-crime-rate-in-the-usa-since-1990/ It's been remarked on for years in newspapers, and sociology books such as Freakonomics try to explain why it's been like that, in spite of very rough economic downturns. Here's another look at the numbers. Check out property crimes across America. You can see a big peak at 13,000 in 1991, down to 9,000 today. (Select United States Total, and Property Crime Total, then submit the form.) www.ucrdatatool.gov/Search/Crime/State/RunCrimeTrendsInOneVar.cfm

Iain Charles-jones Eh, it's not really about need. I personally just like guns. I also hunt so I have a few that are used for different type game. Best part about a right is that you don't "need" a reason to exercise it.

Oof! You just showed bad guys where your guns are man. What were you thinking. Didn't your home get broken into after this? God bless Sootch, keep up the good work. My FAVE channel here.

that magnet isn't going to be to easy to use when you're under stress and your fine motor skills have gone, maybe a larger magnet would be better!
@usingtubes
@usingtubes 10 лет назад
i dont think you really need "fine motor skills" to pass a magnet under the frame. if you have trouble doing that under stress then you probably shouldnt be handling a firearm in the first place
@drnapalm7605

using tubes I agree, if your “fine motor” skills aren’t up to par, you’ve got other issues, and shouldn’t be handling a firearm and better off hoping the person doesn’t kill you, you useless mess

A really nice setup. It could be used for any hidden resources. I especially like your "flashlight". It kind of looks like a light saber. I didn't really catch on 'till you said "long live the republic".

The magnet release on it is stupid and a waist of time.
@GradyPhilpott

+Shaun Golden I agree. The magnet is not a weakness in itself. It's a good way to secure the cabinet, but there should be a secondary uncomplicated means to open the cabinet in a big hurry. Use the magnet latch when you're away or worried about nosy kids. Have a recessed mechanical latch to access the interior under normal conditions.

The "key" does double duty - place it top center when open (just above the storage space) and it supports the mirror in the open position. No reason to hold it up while you work inside. Also means a nice place to put it when you're accessing the storage.

Just as bad as a safe with that stupid magnet thing. Let's see you access it fast when under stress. Cool product with a DUMB lock
@Papa7Bravo
@Papa7Bravo 10 лет назад
Actually, here's a fool proof idea for the magnet, have a magnet the same size as the piece so when under stress you just push the magnet against the wall somewhere in the middle and then lift, a small magnet is pathetic and as you say, is a stupid thing that you wouldn't use properly under stress.

Just carry the handgun and use the mirror to store magnets in...magnets are dangerous.

Nice video, but once one actually has their door kicked in they will realize this is happy horse-$hit. Reinforce/secure your doors/windows, and make your weapon access time less than 5 seconds. Anything else is BS

my uncle built something like this in his house years ago. it was really nice and was hidden in plain sight, but his was a large panel in the wall that had a mechanical popper switch on it and opened out like a door.

I'd like to have a setup kind of like this but hidden a little better and hinged more like a door.
