Tag Heuer Monaco 'Gulf' - First Impressions 

The Monaco is a must for everyone’s collection. A true classic.

I have owned the Monaco gulf for just over a year, puts a massive smile on my face every time I wear it. Gets some admiring looks and has started some great conversations. Fantastic watch.

This is a cool watch, no doubt. I had a chance to try one on at at an AD while I looking at Tudors, of all things. It fit my wrist (same size as Bruce) remarkably well. Alas, as much as I like 60s era auto racing, I know that I almost never use a chronograph for anything other than to time when a parking meter will expire. The ironic thing is that Steve McQueen wore the watch only as a movie prop and didn’t really care for it. He was a Rolex man through and through. Of course, you Breaking Bad fans will recall that Jessie Pinkmann gave Walter White a Monaco as a 51st birthday present.

I love the Gulf colors and the history of this watch as it relates to McQueen and Porsche racing. What I don’t like is the highly polished case and the SW300 base for a very expensive watch. I struggle with the naming of Calibre 11 here.

I have this watch and it stacks up to other luxury watches, falls in line and also stands on its own.

Man that's a nice watch. Was thinking about Tag for a while but never pulled the trigger. This one is a little pricey but gorgeous.

I have the Calibre 12 version of this watch (crown on right side, TAG Heuer, all blue dial). You really can't appreciate this watch until you strap one on.

As a relative newcomer to this addictive hobby, may I say how much I am enjoying your videos Bruce. But, Man, that Hulk is looking dated in this company!

One of the greatest watches!

Love the Gulf colors. Imagine the relevance of this edition when there is no Gulf or gas powered cars. It will at least make for some more good watch banter about this icon. Cool....

Tag heuer , why people don’t like em I don’t know, the carrera range are beautiful, not sure about the autavia? , but the aqua racer a nice diver , plastic spacer is questionable I know. What’s the problem with a plastic spacer anyway ? . I think 🤔 tag are a great brand with a great heritage, maybe a little behind Rolex and omega, but great looking and still a luxury watch in my humble opinion. Keep doing what you’re doing Bruce , you’re personality really shines through, you’re one of the good guys. All the best mate 👍🏻😎🤩

Been on my list, until I got it on the wrist. Didn't work for me, quite massive (even when compared to traditional round 44mm watch), quite high, but the crystal was the biggest letdown, especially how it plays with different light condition (shadow it's able to generate anywhere on the dial, so different to typical round crystal). Still love the design though, brilliant watch to look at.

Speaking from experience, as I have owned the McQueen version of the Monaco as well as a caliber 5 Aquaracer, the case finishing and dials are great! However, the three main knocks against the brand, I’m my estimation are, price, service and movement quality/ lack there of. TAG charges way too much for their pieces. Especially when you take most of the movements they use into account. TAG also has horrific customer service and repair. I had to send out the aquaracer for a repair ( less than a year old) and it came back over three months later with an entirely different issue! TAG made little to no effort at making this right. And lastly, the movements they use can be found in numerous other brands costing a fraction of what TAG charges. Now, they seem to be turning a corner here and are producing in-house calibers, but it’s too little too late for this consumer. I’ll stay with Seiko and Grand Seiko.

Hot watch, but it’s definitely not a one watch collection option. It would be neat to see someone have a one watch from every brand This would be the one I’d pick for my Tag.

The first automatic chronograph was not an Heuer or a Zenith but a Seiko!

This might sound very simplistic, but I just don’t get watches with a square face. As much as I like some of the Tag Heuer chronos, I could never see myself wearing this.

I like the colours but it's very monolithic, looks like you have a flat screen strapped to your wrists. And you have big wrists

Sadly TAG and Seiko have one thing in common... Both are inconsistent when it comes to build quality in terms of dial and other basic details (chapter rings etc) it saddens means to say this as I own these two.

The concept is cool but the Sellita mechanics and thickness are not. But to each his or her own.

I didn't really like it when I saw it in person.

The Gulf logo kind of ruins it for me to be honest. $6,000 for a watch, I don't want to see a gas station logo on it, even if it is supposed to be part of the f1 esthetic. I'd rather buy one of the other Monaco designs.

I am very very much in the minority, but the Heuer-only name needs to go. I get the importance of the name, but TAG Heuer is its own thing now with it's own identity that doesn't need the heritage to support it's importance in horology.
