pressing the + sign after you selected the song (where you select the difficulty), will allow you to change your drum sound.

Tried this arcade machine recently, when visiting Tokyo. And was happy to see it released to the west just 1 day after returning. But I havent seen it anywhere since.. The energy of the game really drew me in

Problem is the world doesn’t appreciate J pop or Japanese franchised music sufficiently to warrant more worldwide support. It’s very Japanese-y rhythm game targeting a specific audience

I really enjoyed it. If you buy the drum, fair warning, two full water bottles aren't enought to weigh it down lol. I had to jury rig a setup to get it to stay in place (probably gonna have my friend build me a weighted stand for it or something. when not playing on drums, buttons work great. haven't done motion yet (just don't think it's even worth trying based off experience with other rhythm games that have those kinds of controls). Touchscreen is something I'll probably try, but I've been getting most of my playtime in on the bus rides to/from work, so it's not the best place for it. Song selection is okay. But I'm probably spoiled from having a soft-modded Wii a few years back with all the TnoT games for it lol. overall 7.5 out of 10. Song selection could be better (but there may be a ton I have yet to unlock) and they need to make the drum heavier. Other than that, about what you've come to expect out of the Taiko no Tatsujin series :)

This game is surprisingly addictive and harder than it looks. It’s an endurance test on higher difficulty. I would do any controls you want but motion controls are only encouraged at lower difficulties due to human responsiveness of hitting thin air. We are not functionally abled to respond rhythmically without sufficient tactile feedback by that point

It's perfectly fine playing without English. There's no story and the mini game instructions can easily be worked out within a couple of seconds of it starting.

after getting the hang of it the joy con motion controls are actually REALLY fun. I play it at usually 2nd to hardest difficulty. I DO want the drum controller though...

How much did you pay total? I got the digital version of the game and all the dlc which ended up being almost $80 and the drum controller on play asia is $73 but the shipping is $22. Where as amazon is $105 for the drum and free shipping. so in total like $160-$180 depending on what you get. The physical copy was $54 or so without the dlc included but i didn't want to wait a month for it lol

You can change the drum sound. Can't check right now, but I think the menu opened when I pressed X in one of the menus, probably on the song select menu

Nevermind, just checked. When you select a song and it asks you which difficulty you want, press + or - and the first option is the drum sound

Nice Review 👍 I have my copy on the way (the Physical Australian one was in fact being sold on Ebay by EB Games themselves brand new and for less than on the eShop thank god) already have the PS4 Version and been playing it to hell and back (was funny actually since that one is digital only and both the PS4 AND Switch titles are like $91 here on the Stores, luckily the morning I got paid around last week I went to Taiko on the PSN Store and it had just been reduced in the last few hours to $39.95 for the January Sales)

I bought the Western version of the Hori tatacon that will be released this Friday (but I already received it). I am posting this because I would have liked to know this before I bought it. If anyone has more questions feel free to ask! I’m from the Netherlands and the tatacon bundle is already sold out in the pre-orders here but you might be able to snatch one if you live somewhere else. The input of the tatacon is very good, I did not have to adjust the settings or anything. No need to mod this version at all. You don’t need to hit it to hard the edges are very sensitive. You do need to give a decent tap on the surface but that’s how I’m used to it in arcades so I think it’s nice to have that same feeling at home. The tatacon is not perfect though; the usb cable is a bit too short for most couch-tv ratios. I will try if it works with an usb extension cable tomorrow. Also the tatacon is not very heavy, even with the pet bottles inserted to increase the weight. In songs on easy its fine but on hard the drum moves and you need to push it right during gameplay which is a bit annoying. Might try to tape it down haha. The game itself is really really fun if you like Japanese music. Lots of songs to choose from with different difficulties, characters with skills that change gameplay a bit and lots of partygames. Menu suggests a DLC will come soon. I don’t regret getting this bundle.

I just ordered the Drum set too! I loved the demo of this game but the joycons kind of sucked after a while. Good for easier levels but not the best for latter. Can't wait to try the drum! Is the drum a better input method than the other options?

I think it's one of those where they're not wholly confident in it so they might not have made too many drums. Think you should be fine to get it this early though =)

Did you tried 2 players mode? It seems like there is no sound effect for 2nd player when hit the note... ...please tell me if you facing same thing or not

I just tried and it's fine for me. Maybe the second player accidentally turned it off? When you're selecting the difficulty you can change the settings sound effect settings.

1) Yes and no, depending on what you mean by download songs. The base game includes, if I counted correctly, 74 songs under the categories of Pops, Anime, Vocaloid, Variety, Classic, Game Music, and Namco Original. This game does include DLC songs that you need to pay money ($1.99 USD) for if you would like additional songs to play. If you mean download songs like you would do for Osu!, it is not possible. 2) Yes, but you would need a USB⇄USB-C adapter. From the drum controllers I've seen on the internet, the adapter is included, but I can't say for sure since I never bought one myself.

Really enjoying this game after importing it, but didn't get the drum because I was wary of getting an import charge to the UK, I didn't get stung this time luckily. I also noticed the double inputs when playing with motion controls, bit did get the hang of it as was getting 200+ note streaks on some 4 star songs with them. Do hope to pick up a drum if we get an overseas release, maybe with some localised songs to replace ones that inevitably can't get licensed for a release outside of Japan.

I bought my game off of play Asia because the Eshop wouldn’t allow me to use a american credit card ( I prefer physical copies anyways),You just need a Japanese account and the game will run. I had a hard time with the motion controls as well so I use the other default, I fell in love with the game and I’m happy that I can finally try the series out. How do you unlock more characters for the upper left of your screen?

You don't need a Japanese account to run the game. You can use a UK or US one too and it's fine. With the new patch it will be in English. You unlock character by completing the mini games =)

I'm in China and thinking about pickimg this up. What's the normal price foe the controller + game? Hopefully they update the controls also because it would be fun to play two player mode and better motion controls foe the second player would be good.

I'm in China too, I picked this up right at release for 800Rmb but a quick look on taobao shows that it's gone up to about 1000 since then due to demand. And there's an absolute tonne of third party knock-off drum accessories now so be careful. Make sure you get the official Hori one.

Got it last night played for good two hour playing it hard with motion control. Went to bed with extreme aches in my hand and arm thiught I was dying. Turns out I played the game to hard I gave myself a cyst in my wrist. 😭 now I can’t play till it better

The drum has slight lag when hitting, but the buttons on it are perfect. Any suggestions? I can't read the settings menu but tried testing it.

You're probably playing on a newer (LCD/LED/OLED) TV with input lag. If you don't have a Game Mode, you may be SOL.

The drum controller is not perfect if you play some Oni level songs(the purple devil), but adequate for flower(easy), bamboo(normal), and most tree(hard) songs. I see many Japanese RU-vidr modding it by replacing the sponge in the drum with wooden plate. I might also buy one if I cannot get my 200 dollar one designed for Wii U to work with the Switch, sad.

dxxpwave I can't read Japanese but on the back of my copy of the game is says 70 near some of the tracks listed on the back of the box, and some have been unlocked while playing.

I don't know the exact figure but you start with about 60 and unlock some more. I have about 71 songs currently (If I counted correctly) and the box says over 70. Maybe I still have more to unlock.

Firstly this is a Bandai game so Nintendo wouldn't do anything, secondly it's usually the copyright owner of the music who would make the claim. As long as the music isn't fully prominent like in this video where it's much lower than my voice, RU-vid's systems won't detect it.

played the 3 ds games and the wii u ones love the series however the pricetag of thease games are hefty with the drums I wish they were cheaper!

Anyone got the UK version yet? Hearing mixed results on how responsive the drum can be. Mostly negative so I cancelled my order and am worried it'll be rare if I wait too long.

James Shearer I got mine yesterday from the UK even though I live in The Netherlands but it was already sold out here. For me the drum controller is not responsive at all. I have to hit with a pretty hard swing to get a note and I don't think that's how it's supposed to be. Maybe I'm just unlucky that I got a bad one but if there are multiple people with this issue I would refrain from buying it.

I was able to get the game on my American switch, we just had to get another gmail to make a new account, set region as japan, then I could get the game because my mom is Japanese and she has a Japanese credit card. I love the game so far! I haven’t tried drum yet for the switch but I do have taiko drums from the Wii and Wii U

I remember some people put a sheet over their drum controller to soften the noise. Also, I have a question: how long does your cart boot up for? Whenever I boot the game, it takes 26-27 seconds before it gets to the logos.

Well it seems that the drum itself is more expensive than the game which I find a little odd. I paid about $50 for it but I have cheaper sources from Hong Kong into China. If you can find it for that I would say it's a deal. Problem is though, many people will be importing which will no doubt jack the price up if they didn't make enough units.

Ah yea I hear ya. I can understand the price being a bit high since it's a custom product. It'll be awhile before I grab one myself so I'm hoping these don't disappear too quickly haha. Anyways, glad you reviewed this and the controls. Also, I don't know if it's in your agenda anymore, but I'm hoping you review some shmups again sometime. I bought a physical copy that was imported. If you want you can buy Japanese eShop cards to use on the Japanese eShop. I think Play Asia sell them.

We seem to be creeping closer to a 'yes' on a Stateside release...I sure hope it happens! :D Sadly, however, it's very unlikely that two of the songs in this version, namely the Lupinranger vs Patranger opening theme and Kamen Rider Build opening theme('Be the One') will make it over....

I would imagine it would be difficult at best to get either, simply due to copyright issues, although with L vs P, it could be easier, now that Hasbro owns the Power Rangers franchise in it's entirety, and may be open to adapting that series in the future...as for Be the One(and I ADORE that song), the 1st two attempts at a Kamen Rider series in the States weren't exactly successful, although Dragon Knight was reasonably good and it -did- win a daytime Emmy.........we don't like to talk about Masked Rider, though.... >_

For those wondering about the drum peripheral, you can save a ton of money by buying the one from ElectriBrite and not HORI. I am aware Play-Asia sells the latter cheaper, but I believe the former is superior. Having a separate controller in place of it being built-in is pretty cool and the drumsticks are in a much better place. It even comes with a stand and adapter so you can use it in Portable Mode. Said stand and adapter also make other games ideal for portable play like Ultimate since you can plug in the GameCube Adapter and still play without a television using your favorite controller. For those that do not have Play-Asia, for sure buy the ElectriBrite drum.

There are loads of third-party drums out there now. Personally I'd stick with the official one. My experience with third-party peripherals has never been great.

*+SwitchWatch* HORI really hasn't been that good in recent years. And with a game where the only goal is to hit a drum, I can't see them being a miss at all. The ElectriBrite one has even gotten better reviews due to the smaller changes it has, such as the controller part being separate from the drum, Portable Mode being a feasible option and so on.

Glad to help! Hope you add that info in the description so people can know. BTW, to change the drum SFX, press the + button in the song selection menu (there's even a Pac Man sound). In addition, an English language patch is supposed to come out on August 9th
