I am glad you made a video of this first. Well done.

Great video - thanks. I've been struggling to understand how to setup my TW and this gives me some great pointers (I'm building a Karatoo). The arms at the bottom of the rudder look like their a great solution to another issue I have. Thanks.

@Mark. it will tighten a bit actually, so you should have no issues.

Rigged up my 3224 with you right there on my iPad, thanks for the help! haha anyway I have a texas taildragger and set it up exactly as you instructed went out test taxied and had no tailwheel steering. Took out a link and it was way better. Thanks to your video I understand the main principle and to be careful not to over tighten. I did discover my existing compression springs where not pulling the same. same size and gauge but one worn out i think, ordered a new set of tension springs, understand less likely to "bottom out" either way thank you so much for posting the Vid. Thanks for posting. Quick question, when Tail is on ground there will be more slack, will steering be slow to react to inputs due to excess cable slack?

Should tension springs Be rigged the same way on the Scott 3200? Very nicely done video!
@BCCinc
@BCCinc 14 лет назад
@lidar532 Yes but they are a little less finicky about the tension.

Lost a spring on my champ today while landing….bough the plane about 2 months ago, gave me a scare losing rudder some authority……anyways they were just generic springs, no chains, no safety devices….anyways I ordered some similar springs you have today off spruce…..my question is I have a lang tail wheel, will I rig it the same exact way?? Thanks for the video
@BCCinc
@BCCinc 2 месяца назад
@hansenfuentes3541I honestly haven't set up a Lang tailwheel so I can't say it will be "Exactly the same" but your results should be similar.

Im trying to find where you set up the cables to the rudder. The service manual talks about centering springs behind the rear bulkhead. Theres springs up by the pedals but nowhere else.. cannot figure out what it means about springs behind the rear bulkhead!! M5 Maule.

Trying to apply the technique to a Maule tailwheel. Shouldn't the technique be applied with the weight of the tail on the spring? It is loose when it has no weight on it but doesn't it go tight or tighter when you put the tail down on the ground?
@BCCinc
@BCCinc 9 лет назад
Not so much, it will /should be a bit more slack with weight so in the air with no weight on the tail the tension will not effect the rudder bushings or "feel" in flight. Unless they are incorrect in the arch then it may get tighter in the loaded position

Are you finding tailwheel shimmy prevalent on Carbon Cubs?
@BCCinc
@BCCinc 3 года назад
Yes if they use their flat spring. On 31's not as bad. A proper caster angle is a must

I just bought an N3 Pup and it doesn't have a locking wheel. One side is WAY tighter than the other side (I wonder if he flew it that way....???), mine has no links to adjust, it's just springs. Any good ideas on how to compress the spring (to make them equal). Also, how tight should each spring be? As it is set up now, it has a HARD left turn in it.

Send me a picture of the tailwheel to info@backcountryconnection.com and I'll see if I can help

@@BCCinc I've sent some pictures. Pretend the rudder is straight on picture #2. One thing I learned from your video is that the entire cable (with spring & chain segment) is NOT under tension between the fuse & tailwheel. There was even a bit of slack. I WAS going to load up the long side (on mine) which....may have bent some of the metal. Thanks for any info.

I have a Lang D-501A tailwheel on my J3 Cub and it has barely snug springs. I’ve had some shimmy and found this video on YT: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CmIGa0OXg5g.html which, if you catch the installation instructions at the beginning of the video, says to connect the springs with 25 to 30 lbs of tension. Would appreciate hearing your thoughts. What you describe in this (your) video seems to make good sense but I’m wondering if different manufacturers require different general setups.

Do you like the bbw?

Yes, love it for what it's built for. I did the original design and build of the BBW so I am kinda partial.
