I spent three days meeting some indigenous people and tribes of Taiwan (台灣). Are they Taiwan's greatest secret? Outside the island, little is known about them. I leave Taipei for the eastern side of the island, visiting the Truku, Amis and Bunun tribes in Hualien and Taitung.
A big thanks to my tour guide Cheryl Robbins for helping me with this video.

I'm Jason, a full-time British Travel Vlogger and RU-vidr who's been to 61 countries. I've been travelling around the world full-time since 2017.
I have travel series' from many of the world's best (and least) known destinations. I filmed the first vlogs on my channel in the summer of 2016 after spending a year living in China. A proper solo trip around Eastern Europe followed after graduating from University in the summer of 2017, taking me to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Kosovo. This marked the start of my efforts to turn vlogging into a full-time job.
After that European trip I explored much of Asia: visiting India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Kazakhstan.
I have also travelled to North Africa and the Middle East fairly extensively over the last five years, filming videos in Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine.
I've travelled to North America just once as a RU-vidr, visiting Mexico in 2021. Though I have been to both the USA and Canada, this was as a child on family holidays.
In 2022, I took my first trip to Sub Saharan Africa, visiting Kenya and Tanzania, before heading to the Middle East, stopping in Dubai and Lebanon. Europe followed, covering both the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus, and afterwards going back to Italy for the second time to cover Milan and Sicily. I then visited the Caribbean for the first time, covering the Dominican Republic, before heading to both Brussels and Amsterdam, then covering Taiwan and the Philippines in Asia. I finished off the year with a trip around Morocco.
I started my travels in 2023 by finally visiting Paris, taking the Eurostar from London. I then headed over to Qatar for a few days, before heading to the south of India and Singapore.

Are his tattoos real? Living in Taiwan for over 16 years, though I have seen 'drawn on temporary tattoos', I have never encountered any Taiwan aboriginals with real face tattoos.
@paiwanhan
@paiwanhan Месяц назад
@@eldeguello9154 Pitayro Ukah's tattoos are absolutely real. He was raised by elders who still had tattoos, and he decided to get them himself in 2007. Facial tattoos were banned by both the Japanese and the Chinese colonial governments, and most elders with original tattoos have sadly passed away. Back in 2011 there were only 7 left, and 13 more years have passed since then. Displaying facial tattoos in public used to come with some social stigmas attach to it. Even fellow Truku asked why he's wearing tattoo stickers everyday when he first received his tattoos. I wouldn't say Taiwan is free of discrimination against its Indigenous peoples and cultures, although things have improved a lot since democratization, and I hope new generations of indigenous peoples are free to choose whether to get traditional tattoos or not, and don't have make their choices based on fear of losing social acceptance.

I'm glad you visit this communities and make a documentary about them! I'm an indonesian, and our ancestors were austronesian who came from Taiwan thousands of years ago. This indigenous tribes are actually our long relatives. I find many similarities in their food and culture with the food and culture across Indonesian archipelago, like the bamboo rice (similar to lemang), yellow rice, glutinous rice wine, the music instruments (see kolintang, gambang, seruling), the use of rattan, the tattoo tradition, the tapestry, the worship of ancestors, and especially their language. I think the indigenous tribes of Taiwan needs to be studied more, because they have amazing culture and history

You will go live with tribal cannibals and report back how wonderful and enlightened they are then right? Let’s not pretend that humans are somehow benevolent just because they live differently. Many indigenous tribes had massive slave trades, human sacrifices, and cannibalism. So it’s not exactly like you would willingly be their neighbor.

Thank you so much for this great vedio. Taiwan (Formosa) is the mother land of the Austronesian family in the world, as evidenced by Professor Robert Blust in Hawaii Uni. The Austronesian groups started to spread to the oceans since thousands of years ago. Very few youtubers focus on this part. Your project here is amazing and meaningful. Thanks a lot.

have a look at the youtube video on Austronesian expansion - they didn't teach this in School when we were young because the old theory that we are 'Malay' was incorrect, but Austronesian expansion is now historic fact - our ancestors in the Philippines came FROM Taiwan, from these very tribes. After our ancestors developed how to create balangay and bangka boats, they moved out over the ocean to populate Indonesia, Malaysia, Guam, Palau. Micronesia and Polynesia. All languages in these regions are related, and the peoples too: Austronesian languages, and if you wanted to say what lahi we are part of, it is the Austronesian peoples of Island Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and Madagascar. They now teach these in schools as part of high school ed here :)

@Huo Yeh Not really, people living in the northern parts got the catholic religion from Spanish missionaries while those in the south got the Christian religion from the Dutch missionaries, which both used medical care as an effective way to preach. Also, it is commonly believed that the Austronesians ORIGINATED in Taiwan, so in a way, the Philippines got their ancestry from Taiwan. This is also confirmed by my uncle's wife who is aboriginal, she had a vacation in the Phillies and she could understand 70% of the local dialect.

Not really? If you are a tribe who has a neighbor who eats people, then you develop a natural distaste for that tribe. If you have a tribe besides you who captured your tribe, then naturally you will have an aversion to that group and their culture. If you witnessed a tribe digging up bodies from graves and dancing with them, you might think twice before trading with that tribe. It takes a position of safety and comfort to pretend people don’t have natural instincts in their dealings with foreign tribes and people.

@@edstraker8451 You’re pretending history just started yesterday? Or that cultural interaction is brand new? So we all just met, and it’s a totally clean slate without thousands of years of history? You can hypothesize and pontificate all you want. Nature versus nurture is still wildly contested in academia for a reason, and epigenetics is real. You can pretend that humans don’t have instinct or genetic memory like every single other species from butterflies to salmon appears to have, and you can intellectually try to grasp human interaction with a purely objective framework, but that’s not informed by any reality whatsoever. It’s wishful thinking to assume that we have no inherent reactions to others who treated our ancestors poorly, and every single species on earth appears to have some form of genetic memory. All it takes is your ancestors being attacked by someone who has a certain appearance. That’s why animals react to certain stimuli like smells or visual patterns that stimulate fight or flight.

Jason - I believe you have said that your Taiwan videos were sponsored and that there were other bloggers also involved in the project. Can you say by whom it was sponsored (the Taiwanese government?) and why the videos were delayed for so long? Thanks.

They said it's because the ancestral spirits are warning you. If you keep going you may encounter danger. But that silence during that 10 minutes after you farted...Torture : )

I can tell you do this for love, as opposed to the foreign vlogger residents of Taiwan who do this for money with mindless video topics.

They look like Filipinos, probably thru Bataan they came to the Philippines. The RICE TERRACES. It is SO SAD because the new generation don't want to live in the mountain, they want to study technic.

I have personally researched on the archeological evidence in Taiwan for years, and I discovered there are three places during the "Kingdom of Batuan" (Dadu in Mandarin) was located in Taiwan central and western area that are actually related to the ancient civilization of Babylon post flood era based on the archeological evidence of pottery patterns and metallic remains that have been discoverered by local Taiwan scholars over the years, and they realized its resemblance in cultural similarity with the Mesopotamia river-basins of ancient Babylon. Including the snake symbols & tattoos and color patterns of the aboriginal tribal custumes in its designs were almost identical as those of ancient Babylon when the collapse of Tower of Babel post-flood took place. The ethnic group Batuan (pronounced like Dadu in Mandarin) may have immigrated to the Philippine Islands at the same time. The Huiwen ruins in Taichung City, Shisanhang in New Taipei City, and all the way to Sanxian Cave in Taitung have been excavated with the possible traces and remains of pottery and metal pieces from Dadu Kingdom gradually moving towards the South Pacific Islands. The historical footprint of the language were of the same origin for the Austronesian migrants across the South Pacific islands even as far as Indian Ocean. The Minor Ice Age eventually led to the rise of sea levels in the Age of Discovery with Portugal & Spain, it was the main reason why the people of the Dadu Kingdom gradually moved from the island of Taiwan to the Philippines due to the global climate changes. ONE important findings was a Bible translation to ancient Saisia tribal in Taiwan by the Dutch missionaries back in 1600s.
