I used to use half a nightcrawler, thread it on the hook then a bring the end on the hook past the barb. Could use the same worm for quite a while. My brother used to get nice crawlers under dry cowpies

I have had good luck using just a 1/4 in piece of worm just up past the hook barb. Harder for them to steal the bait.
