Video 3 in the putting series. In this video Chris discusses distance control and shows how you can work on this skill during practice.
Chris then continues to show you how this can be incorporated into your pre shot routine on the course to help eliminate those 3 putts.

Great series! It really reminds me to practise more putting. It's such a critical element of getting the score down. Can't wait to get out there later today

I set up over the ball so I can see the ball, and the cup in my peripheral vision, then imagine a straight line to the cup, or the target if allowing for an expected curve. I find that seeing both cup and ball at impact gives me better length and (mostly) direction.

Thanks Chris. I’m enjoying your series (all of them) and find them very useful. Can you consider advanced bunker series? How to get out short, medium and longer shots?

So when judging distance Chris are you saying there is no magic formula. I always thought that you swung the putter back and through the same distance. So for example a 6 foot putt would require a 6 inch backswing. Obviously we need to factor in the slope and speed of the grass etc. I think the putter is a difficult club to master.

i for myself always have the same gap between my feet, and before a round i go to the putting green and make some putts without a hole and just see how long travels the ball if i swing my putter from inside of the foot to inside. for the next putts i swing my putter from outside of the foot to outside. next putt i swing my putter until he reaches the heigth of my both ankles. and after all putts i simply counting the steps how far the balls roll. sorry for my bad english but i hope you understand what i mean.

Thanks for this Andi. I completely understand your drill - this is really helpful. I will try this next time I play.

Hi Steven, unfortunately yes this is the case. There are some guidelines that we tend to see the best players adopting, although I would hazard a guess that if you asked the best in the world how they judge distance they wouldn’t be able to answer. It’s more or a skill that needs to be developed rather than a technical think that can be worked in 👍

Hi Andi R, is this what you do when you are determining the strength of a putt vs the speed of a green?Maintain the same gap between your feet. Before a round go to the putting green and make some putts on a part of the green that is as flat as possible without putting towards a hole.Maintain the same pace of swing and see how far the ball rolls when: 1. you swing the putter from the inside of the back foot to the inside of the front foot. 2. you swing the putter from the outside of the back foot to the outside of the front foot. 3. you swing the putter from the height of your back ankle to the height of your front ankle… and so on from up your back leg to your front leg till you run out of space on the green. Count the steps to see how far the balls rolls for each type of putting stroke. Converting the number of steps from ball position on the green to the type of putting stroke strength you will need to get to the hole should now be easier.
