OFFICIAL SITE: www.hopscotchfilms.com.au/film...
When late-twenties Margot meets Daniel, their chemistry is intense and immediate. But Margot suppresses the sudden attraction: she is happily married to Lou, a celebrated cookbook writer. When Margot learns that Daniel lives across the street from them, the certainty about her domestic life shatters. She and Daniel steal moments throughout the steaming Toronto summer, their eroticism heightened by their restraint. Margot discovers some unsettling truths about herself.
Swelteringly hot, bright and colourful, Take This Waltz leads us, breathlessly, through the familiar but uncharted question of what long-term relationships do to love, sex and our images of ourselves. With a soundtrack that features both emerging independent bands and legendary songs by Leonard Cohen, it's a funny, bittersweet tale of love. Director Sarah Polley (Away From Her) has created a sensual film, full of moments oscillating between joy and comedy and heartbreak.

This is one of the all time movie scenes. Watch Luke Kirby's face go from excitment , to yearning, to sorrow back to excitment then back to reality. Their chemistry is electric! Luke Kirby is amazing.

Agreed. A scene more out of life than from a movie . That tear he wiped away as he turned around was unforgettable.

It speaks volumes at the end when she is riding the same ride alone with a melancholic expression. I completely understand how she felt.

It feels like a metaphor for their whole relationship. The harsh light once the magic abruptly ends. The isolation left behind. The dream awoken from. I will also add Luke Kirby has more charisma than eighty other humans combined and has the power to make every scene he’s in exceptional and unforgettable to the point where he almost eclipses everyone else. Both actors share a certain magical vulnerability that is highly engaging. Together it’s dynamite.

@@LeMonsieurBanane I don't think so. He is basically a predator who was disturbed in the middle of the hunt. Its unrelated to the Last scene.

This song is really perfect for the movie because the theme of how new things get old is present in the film. So, "Video Killed the Radio Star" is very much talking about a way in which something old is being taken over and replaced.

I think this is one of the most honest films about relationships I've seen in a looooong time. Perfectly sums up our generation; I recognised myself and my friends so many times in this movie. And when the music cuts out just as she's embracing the song, it's the perfect metaphor... not subtle... but spot on. I loved it. (also I've never laughed my guts up and wanted to ball my eyes out during one movie so much in my life).

This scene is one of the greatest among the greats in movie history Its hands down my favorite scene and major kudos for the exemplary display of how we have the capacity to escape reality (via denial or a mindful decision) to induldge our fantasies, even at the cost of losing our partner's and family....all for 7mins. on a carnival ride (although a very cool one).That 7mins of letting go and giving in to our primitive desires and to fuck off all responsibilities, everyone else's feelings&break social norms is an EXTREMELY tempting,delicious and dangerous place to be in.I've felt the way Michelle's character felt.It's euphoric and feels as if the ride will never end.We can convince ourselves that the "ride" is now reality and give ourselves permission to choose fantasy over what's best for us . However, the stark white lights of reality will always come on and slap you back into the real world.We can make dumb decisions trying to recreate the feeling believing its real enough to leave due to the false belief that following our "feelings" leaving the brain out, is rational.I'm babbling but I've been on that ride and three lights always came on.I'd try to recreate, daydream and chase that 7mins. like a euphoric love junkie and break my own heart.Thankfully I was able to invite my brain to participate before making decisions even with my every atom wants to collide and devour my temptation.I believe it comes with maturity.I will still induldge but I know it's only for a moment.Ask myself if the moment is worth whatever repercussion.I have said fuck it that 7mins is worth it whatever heartache comes next...and it always does.

Seems to me you wanted it to do what evvverrry other rom com would do, which is fair enough we want it to work out for them... But What Sarah Polley did was show us the truth. Relationships are rarely perfect... the grass is never greener forever. I applaud her honesty. The sex was perfect in my opinion because it made me (and you it seems?) feel horrible... horrible because that's exactly what you picture the person you love doing when they leave you. It's heartbreaking. And spot on.

I found it ironic when Sarah Silverman character is coming down on Michelle's character about not always running to fill in the gaps and lulls in life and relationships.She's filling in her own gaps and lulls simultaneously by relapsing and getting drunk.

One final thought: I realized it's not the sex/menage-a-trois that bothered me per se. I loved "Henry and June" and "Gia," for example. I am not a prude. What BOTHERED me -- and I'm not interested in an argument, we have different opinions -- is that the excessive sex did not seem like a natural evolution for HER character. Also, it seemed too quickly rendered.

@LaurieWiegler
@LaurieWiegler 11 лет назад
NO. I loved "Casablanca" and "Broadcast News", for example. Perhaps it didn't need to end when she turned to him at the water, but I was sickened by the menage-a-trois episodes. I've not only seen hundreds of movies in my 51 years but I've reviewed them and written them. As for relationships, I have had dozens of those, too, and know they are messy. The idea that I want films to end tidily means you don't know me. Of course you don't.
@gwenlewis4443

To be honest, I don't think they were meant to be taken so seriously. They were just there to emphasise that Margot was finally exploring her sexuality and was on this giddy whirl. Too much too fast tho. Not enough of the real foundational stuff like mutual friends, shared interests, conversation... Self-actualisation. I mean, where are their families? What is their future? Towards the end of the movie, we can see Daniel's artwork filling up the walls of their loft, but Margot's doing these humdrum things, like baking, cooking, rather than writing, pursuing her dreams. Margot wasn't living the life she really wanted with Lou, and still didn't manage it with Daniel, who could perhaps have inspired her.

@blindoutmysight

it was important in the movie
@spacenachos
@spacenachos 6 лет назад
It was to emphasize her desires. Before they go she calls it a place "too loud and dark to do anything stupid". This ride allowed her to experiment and push herself onto kirby. It also emphasizes the novelty of the relationship given they're riding a ride that is only fun until it stops AND the the choice of music describing the aging of technology. This is probably one of the most important scenes of the film.

Did you even read what I wrote? We were supposed to be sickened. Watching someone you love move on is sickening. You have an impressive cv but it doesn't meant you're right, You're a writer? So what? Someone wrote every clichéd film out there. Guess what Sarah Poley is a writer too and I much prefer her honest, original vision to yours. I don't know what your age has to do with it either, it just fits with my claim that the film is of my generation. Maybe it just wasn't for you?

How did it ruin it it? Was it because she left her husband because it was pretty obvious this wasn't a movie that was gonna have a happy ending or even one that provides closure. That's the whole premise of the film.
