My RU-vid channel is about coin roll hunting and coin collecting. So, I get boxes of coins from several banks each week and then I hunt the coins or errors, varieties, silver coins, etc. These pennies were left over from my previous 3-4 weeks of hunting pennies. I deposit the pennies and nickels in coin machines and then deposit the dimes, quarters and half dollars in bank bags. I normally use my credit union's coin machine - but they won't let me make a video in there. Also, we have live streams during the week where you can learn more about coin collecting and what to look for. Is there a coin check website? I was once told about a "red book" I should purchase before going through them all but that was before the Internet was so powerful and prevalent in our society. I advise anyone who uses coinstar machines to at least count your quarters accurately and if possible photograph them in stacks before dumping them into the machine. I have counted my change on 3 occasions as an experiment and all 3 times the machine inaccurately counted and scammed me out of over $80 in total on top of the 12% they charge for just using the machine. I'm continuing to test machines at different locations and documenting the results because I am almost certain they are programmed to cheat people out of money. They dont care though of course because it is primarily poor people who have to cash in their change with machines rather than at a bank from time and who have no resources to pursue legal action against the company. It may only be a little money but it's the principle that matters.
@SouthernMetal

That's why I only do zinc pennies in the Coin Star - as I can do a little math to figure out if they are going to rob me. 150 pounds equals 68038.9 grams. Most 1982 pennies are zinc but some are copper, I have found a few copper ones. A dime only costs 5.03 cents, a quarter costs 11.11 cents and a half dollar costs 17.15 cents. You would think they would reduce the size of these coins - but then all of these coin machines would need to be redone - and then you have coin wrappers, coin trays, etc. that would then be obsolete. We have a web page that lists all of the varieties for each coin - along with pictures on Variety Vista and links to graded prices on PCGS. Check it out at southernmetal.net/coins.htm. But, for varieties, you will want to have a microscope (amzn.to/2TizJiY) that connects to your computer, or a loupe (a microscope is much easier). My dad had a huge plastic beer bottle that he threw change in. Well, he decided to pick it up one day. The bottom fell out. He filled up a few plastic tubs and went to the bank and got plenty of change rollers. He handed the rollers to me and told me to get to rolling. If I remember I rolled over a thousand in change. When I got older I also saved my change and the last I rolled I bought a 64 inch TV. I have never used the change counter since I'm cheap. The bank now don't want to give you many coin rollers, but during the plan-demic the bank was happy for change rollers. My dad has at least 20 full huge plastic tubs full of change. I know at least one is full of Kennedy coins. He told me that will be the gift that I'll get once he is gone. Hope that's still plenty of tubs from now. His buddy passed and his kids loaded up buckets to take to the change machine. After separating the "special" coins they got $36,000 in change. Your penny's will add up. Just make sure you have good floor joints. I have a small chest of foreign money that I know nothing about, but I like seeing all the different types. Japanese money looks plastic. Be sure to check your change for silver nickels, dimes, quarters and half dollars. Close. A retail store can buy coins for their cash registers from the bank. If you buy a whole box of pennies for $25 USD the net weight happens to be right at 15 lbs. The Coinstar machine was apparently slightly off. They should have paid you $250, not $260
@SouthernMetal
@SouthernMetal 5 месяцев назад
A box of pennies contains both copper and zinc pennies - and copper pennies weigh more than zinc pennies. These were all zinc pennies. So - 150 pounds equals 68038.9 grams. The average weight of a zinc penny is 2.495 grams - so 68038.9 divided by 2.495 = 272.70 or $272.70. That amount was really close to my total. Thanks for the comment @Tux.Penguin !
@JB-zg8jf
@JB-zg8jf 5 месяцев назад
A penny weighs approximately 0.088 ounces. So, 150 pounds of pennies would be equal to 2400 ounces. Since there are 16 ounces in a pound, you have 150 * 16 = 2400 ounces. Now, to convert ounces to dollars, you would need to divide by 100 (since there are 100 pennies in a dollar). So, 2400 / 100 = 24 dollars. Therefore, 150 pounds of pennies would be equal to 24 dollars.
@SouthernMetal
@SouthernMetal 5 месяцев назад
I think your math is a bit off. You are dividing the 2400 ounces by one ounce - when a penny weighs .0881849 ounces. So, divide 2400 by .08818149 and you get 27215. Divide that by 100, and you get $272.15. And, my scale is only accurate to .02 pounds, so the 150 pounds could have been a little heavier than exactly 150 pounds - since I measured individual buckets of pennies and added the totals together. Thanks for the comment @JB-zg8jf .

Simple math would have said 150 lbs of zinc pennies (at 2.5 grams each) would be about 27,216 pennies or $272.16 worth of pennies. Looks like the machine got in the same ballpark.
@SouthernMetal
@SouthernMetal 4 месяца назад
Yep. These were all zinc pennies - but they do lose a little bit of weight after they have been in circulation for a while. So, 150 pounds equals 68038.9 grams. The average weight of a zinc penny is 2.495 grams - so 68038.9 divided by 2.495 = 27270 or $272.70. That amount was really close to my total. Thanks for the comment @cougarfan8481 !

One dollar off. My guess was $272.23.. 150lbs of pennies divifed by 0.00551 lbs (weight per zinc penny). Then divide by 100 to convert cents to dollars.
@SouthernMetal

That's pretty close! My scale's accuracy is only to two-hundredths of a pound, and I weighed each of the smaller tubs of pennies individually - which means each tub could have had a few extra pennies in it and the scale wouldn't have rounded up to the nearest .02 pounds.
