Taking a look at Pentius & Philtop Oil Filters

Today I take a look at two affordable Chinese manufactured oil filters. We will look at the inside construction as well as overall feel. The Pentius is designed in Los Angeles, California and manufactured in China. The build quality is comparable to a nice Wix filter. The Philtop filter is designed and manufactured in Shenzhen, China. Unfortunately, the Philtop can only be found commercially on Amazon or Chinese Wholesale Websites like Alibaba & Aliexpress. I managed to luck out and find this Philtop through Ebay.

I avoid them only because I've had an experience that I have yet to hear another person go through. I've worked at 3 different parts stores and haven't found a soul with this experience yet. My mother years ago had a 1989 Buick Park Ave. with the gm 3.8 V6 under the hood. I did (and still do) her oil and filter changes for her. During one of those changes we had installed a commercial oil filter (most likely an STP filter back then) along with Mobil 1 oil and when it came time to change it I took it off there to find the cage had already become unattached on the inside and had busted into bits. There were pieces of it hung in the oil passage the filter screwed into. I was pissed as you could imagine and to see that plastics were being used in oil filters that way lead me to refusing to use any oil filter that had a plastic cage in it. When I did a valve cover gasket job later on I was picking bits out of it.
