How to open an EGR valve for cleaning and putting it back together. This is an EGR valve for Peugeot, Citroen, Ford, Volvo, etc., with the 1.6HDi engine. Cleaning is with EGR spray can cleaner and/or Carburetor spray can cleaner, using a toothbrush.
A more updated video showing taking apart the EGR valve and cleaning everything is here: • The complete guide to ...
See the video originally here: • Egr 1.6hdi peugeot 207
Eventually I replaced the original EGR valve with HELLA EGR (amazon UK): amzn.to/2MJFLFm or ebay: ebay.us/rFvz9i

I have posted a new (i.e. updated) video that covers pretty much everything to do with cleaning/dismantling the EGR valve in 1.6HDi/TDCi engines. You can view it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wTQtVJEqGXI.html

Just wanted to add a tip. I've just taken mine off and cleaned it. EGR AND BRAKE cleaner was useless, hardly touched the deposits. So I used a foaming oven cleaner. It now looks like brand new inside. Obviously take off the electrical part first as you will need to hose and fresh water to clean the oven cleaner out. It cleaned it amazingly and because its foam, it got into every space and sat there until I washed it out. I used Mr Muscle brand. Amazing for cleaning these.

Good video, very much appreciated. These valves are costly, even on eBay you will pay around £75 for a second hand one and a few hundred pounds for a reconditioned one. My car is a Peugeot 307 1.6hdi 2006 and this is the exact same valve. I understand there are two versions of these valves, the only difference being the electrical connector. I understand that they cannot be swapped because the valves have different electrical resistances. Don’t be tempted to remove the four screws on top of the plastic cap to replace the motor because there is a stud holding it in place.

Nice video, so when you assemble the actuator with the other metal part you need to rotate it? Is there a special position?
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 6 лет назад
Yes, there is a special position. It needs to be rotated in a way that the metal pin is at the upper position. This way the electronic part when activated will push the pin down and I think will open the valve..

Depending on the car you can operate to hear it clicking (valve closing and opening). With Peugeot (pp2000) and Citroen (Lexia) one can check the operation of the electronic part.

Did you have to reconfigure the new EGR valve using diagnostics tools like PP2000 once you replaced the original old part?
@moremolecules

Hi CSR ALN, If the EGR is replaced with a new one, then yes, one needs to reconfigure with PP2000 (Peugeot) or Lexia (Citroen). If it is just cleaning, then there is no need to reconfigure it. The ECU needs to now how exactly the EGR valve behaves.

R H that components are capacitors not resistors. They are 100nF and 10nF (if I'm not wrong). If you look on their body through a lens you can see the capacitance value (103 for 10nf and 104 for 100nf). You can buy they on rs-components, mouser or on ebay... These are common electronic components, but the only problem it's to find they with the right shape. Also look for the presence of oxidation because in my old and broken egr valve i found that the metallic contacts/paths are in bad conditions and in this case it's better don't waste your time and buy a new (or second hand) valve. Sorry for by bad english and good luck!

Yes, it is worth a try. Most likely, although not necessarily, the EGR valve is stuck on opened due to the carbon deposits. Worth a try to clean it completely. In the rare occasion that the EGR has burnt out, then you may need to replace it with a new one. All in all it is worth trying to clean it.

Yeah, many thanks for the question, but difficult to answer. I have only tried two of them. I currently have had Hella for ~2-3 years and have not had any problems, so on that basis I would say Hella is pretty good. I had before HaaS and that had some problems with not turning properly the shaft and had errors, so I cannot recommend it. It could well have been a single batch or something, but I would go with the Hella if I were you. You might be unlucky and hit a bad batch, but that is the same with every manufacturer. Yeah, sorry about the long answer, difficult to tell what your luck would be, but mine is Hella and I have not had problems.

When you move the forks by your hand on the electronic part.. when the forks are returning to start position, are they slightly pinching at some point like some intermediate station, can you feel it? Mine does and I dont know if that's how it supposed to be. Please respond. Thanks
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 4 года назад
Hi kleinek86, there should not be an intermediate point. They should return smoothly, with some force to the original position, no snagging. If there is some intermediate "station", "position", this means that something is stopping it from returning or it is catching on something in the top part of the EGR valve. I would suggest to open the very top part and investigate. I have a video of how to assemble the top part (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-skYgkb4xSbQ.html), as it is slightly tricky. Watch it first before opening it. Yours maybe different inside than mine, but it should be fairly similar. There is a spring inside that does this rotation. Good luck, hope this helps.

@moremolecules
@moremolecules 6 лет назад
It should rotate freely and smoothly. As far as I understand there should not be any distinct steps. It basically lifts and opens the valve. I think the one on the video was faulty, i.e. had a bit of a snag within the channel.
@pcsoundrecording347
@pcsoundrecording347 6 лет назад
Thanks. My own solenoid actuator sticks, binds slightly between two extreme positions. Sometimes the spring force cannot push it through. I tried soaking in diesel, lubricate with light oil to no avail. Taking the lid off and giving the solenoid multiple rotations in either direction in hope of loosening the soot (no way to take it apart and clean) only seems to have made it worse. Unlucky for me it is the same with a second hand one bought of ebay. I guess these are prone to failure and a new solenoid valve is the only solution.
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 6 лет назад
The one I have shown in the video was only 1-year old. My computer software was showing errors of valve sticking even after cleaning it thoroughly. The channel was somewhat not drilled very well. I opted to replace it with a new one. I suspect that the channel can be made smoother, although not too sure with what. Sand paper will not do it probably.

@@moremolecules When you changed the EGR valve did your fault codes reappeared? If you get EGR fault codes, can the turbo or the DPF filter be the real problem?
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 5 лет назад
@@clsfiftyfive , all codes disappeared after changing the EGR valve. Nothing EGR-related has come up after ~1.5 years and ~12-15,000 miles. My car does not have DPF/fap. Update: I thought about it a bit more. It is possible that turbo problem could result in relatively more EGR problems. Say your turbo blows oil and some of it will go through the EGR and thus blocking it more regularly. The intercooler will condense quite a bit of the oil, but some will pass through. Also, oil vapour or faulty CrankCase Ventilation valve could also bring more oil to the turbo and get compressed to the EGR.

Thanks for your videos explaining the process for dissassembling this Valeo EGR valve! I had the P042F error on my 2010 Fiesta with the 1.6TDci engine (EGR stuck in closed position). I disassembled the EGR and cleaned out all the soot, after which the mechanical components for opening and closing the valve definitely moved much more easily. I also removed the top part of the solenoid to check no issues in there and reassembled it as per your other video - Thanks! After assembling back onto the car, clearing the fauly code and doing a test drive the same fault code came back :( Do you know if there is a way to bench test the solenoid, or even do it on the car ? Or is there a way to open up the bottom part of the Solenoid to check for issues and clean it up? I'm trying to figure whether I just need to replace the solenoid - but I'd rather fix my current one to save having the extra job of calibrating a new valve! Thanks again!
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 2 года назад
You could test the EGR valve and the solenoid with software that is for Ford, not too sure though what it is called. Each manufacturer has its own software and this is testable. The bottom part cannot be opened unfortunately without destroying it. Make sure that the channel is really clean and smooth. I had a new EGR valve that the channel was snagging and giving me an error. I tried with sand paper to smooth it out, but still did not work. I had to buy another one at the end.
@MartinParmiter
@MartinParmiter 2 года назад
@@moremolecules thanks for your reply. Yes I think with ForScan software it is possible to view the live valve data, and see if it is moving etc. I have ordered a vgate vlinker fs obdii to usb adapter to connect to the ForScan software, to get deeper info on the DTC and also see the live egr solenoid data. If it's not opening, it won't be possible to know if it's because the solenoid is faulty, or if the valve mechanism is jammed... Unless maybe if I test it fully assembled, and then also with the solenoid removed from the valve body. But the body would still have to be fitted to the engine to prevent lots of exhaust gas coming out! There must be an easier bench test though? When you say that channels do you mean the curved grooves that the bearings on the end of the horizontal pin run in? Mine looked pretty smooth to me, I think this is the original OEM part. After I cleaned it up with oven cleaner and brake cleaner, I lubricated it with wd40 and the mechanism was very easy to operate by finger... If I did replace the egr valve with a new one, is it the ForScan software that would be able to calibrate it?
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 2 года назад
@@MartinParmiter Yes, that's the one. I think you can simply plug it in and monitor the EGR data. If it gives percentage of EGR then it is working correctly. You can plot it vs. load for example. I would clear all the errors and have a journey with the device plugged in and record them. You will see when the error appears, unless it comes straight away. I am not all knowing expert in any way, but my experience is that it is either the electronic top part or the valve is snagging somewhere. Either the pin with the bearings or the bottom part. Soak the bottom part in degreaser for longer and see if that helps. Or what I normally do is washing with dishwashing liquid under the tap (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-koSxf67CtHI.html). I move the pin with the bearings while doing this, it helps cleaning the bottom part. Even better if you can find some fine brushes and reach deep around the bottom valve. The ForScan should be able to calibrate it, but for the original valve you do not necessarily need to calibrate it although it helps.
@MartinParmiter
@MartinParmiter 2 года назад
@@moremolecules thank you. Yes I'm pretty sure the bottom part of the valve was pretty clean as it seemed to move really freely. Inside the top part there was some corrosion on the circuits but I couldn't see anything definitely wrong. I did clean the internal connectors a little to make sure they make good connection. Currently I can clear the error and it doesn't come back straight away, so when I have the ForScan set up I can repeat and see what sets the code off. If it looks like there is no % of egr opening, couldn't it be due to either the mechanical part sticking, or the solenoid being faulty?... So it would be hard to tell which one is the cause?

@@alexhousley2070 Apologies, I thought you meant the actual EGR valve, rather than the upper (electronic) part. Either way, it has to be aligned properly in order for it to work. Check cables for the fuel lines/filter and electrical connections. If it turns over it may mean a lot of things, but check intake manifold piping and fuel lines. @@alexhousley2070 Even if the EGR is completely blocked (i.e. not working due to bolts, etc.) that would not cause non starting issues, possibly hard starting/rough idle. Cannot be 100% certain, but fuel issues will certainly cause non starting. Definitely check fuel lines, electrical connections (MAF, fuel filter, EGR itself), air hoses (turbo) or anything that you have removed/taken off. Certainly check the fuel priming pump, it should get relatively hard in a few squeezes/pumps (5-10 maybe more) and you should hear fuel flowing through it. If it is really soft and there is no resistance when squeezing, then there is air in the fuel lines, either hose/line disconnected or ruptured. Good luck!

There are two ways where it has gone wrong. One is the position of the bottom pin and one in the electronic part. When the upper part was put together, does the fork thingy move freely and come back? Also, when you put the top electronic part on the bottom, you have to be extremely careful that it slots on the bottom pin. Take it apart together and start again. The spring at the top is also a bit tricky.

@@raresofficial1997 Yes, that is the correct operation. The fork rotates to one side and the return is done by the spring. The fork itself moves the EGR valve (bottom pin) to bottom position, otherwise it is in the upper position.
