I also live in San Diego, would love to find out how long would it take from San Diego to Catalina on a 30ft boat.

From Point Loma to Catalina is 82-83 miles. At an average speed of 15 mph you’re there in 5 1/2 hours or so. I’ve gotten there much quicker just depends on the weather. I’ve also towed the boat from SD to long beach at launched. Then you’re about 28-30 miles away from the islands. Good luck 🤙

Easy trip, check weather. We use Buoyweather. It’s gets reading from the actual buoys. Waves happening is so accurate, real time. We also use Windy.app for accuracy of winds. Haven’t had a problem in 2 years.

Very cool! We just got a boat about the same size as yours and planning a trip to Catalina but just been taking test trips and stretching the distance to prepare for going to Catalina. I'm still paranoid about breaking down in the middle of the ocean. Is a Dinghy required to go to Catalina? Also, where did you leave from before heading to Catalina?
@teammahaldotcom4264

Congratulations on your new boat. We did the same prior to our trip to Catalina. Several Test trips outside the bay, by the way we started at San Pedro (Cabrillo Way Marina). I’m with you feeling anxious at first but we planned everything ahead. Checking and monitoring the weather, waves and swells heights. With regards to the dinghy, we prefer to have it since boat taxi is a bit pricey per trip and it gives us a little bit of freedom knowing we can go around and explore nearby coves.. You’ll enjoy the trip and trust me, your first trip won’t be the last. Enjoy and let us know your experience 🥰

@@teammahaldotcom4264 Much appreciated! Our boat isn't new by a long shot but new to us! 🙂 Just got it a month ago and trying to build confidence in it's performance. Our boat name is "Palawan" and in Newport Dunes, we'll look out for you guys and hope to see you out on the waters. 🙂Do you use any particular app for guiding or do you primarily use your GPS?
@teammahaldotcom4264

Yes make sure it’s sea worthy. Do you have boat US? They will support you if you breakdown anywhere. We use our garmin chartplotter, plus we installed radar on the boat. We got stuck in the fog coming back from Catalina one time. It was clear then all of sudden the fog rolled in. We were 8 miles from San Pedro. Since that experience we bought and installed a radar unit. Now it’s no worries. In fact last trip we departed in the fog and was in it all the way home. By the way, you named your boat Palawan. Are you Filipino?

What kind of documentations paperwork the patrol was asking for ? What documentation paperwork do we need to prepare to show ?

It only took us 55 mins. Smooth seas. There is a daily fee, I think it is 3 hours. for $20. I suggest checking their website. We stayed for 2 nights for our first stay, then 4 nights our second stay.

What speed were you hitting? Wanna go this summer, gonna take the 35' Carver aft cabin and the 17' Larson as a dinghy back and forth, so we'll be going slower for sure, I'm thinking maybe 2+ hours for us 🤔 it'll be our first time too 🙋 and not towing, I'll have the wife captain the Larson

Blurb from website: Shoreboat/water-taxi service is also available; the service monitors VHF Channel 9. There is a charge per person, per trip each way.

I wish boats were like like cars, put it in park and it won't move. You got it and it will become easier with practice.
