Senior Visual Development Artist Anthony Francisco joins us to talk about creature design and how he went from a minimum wage job to his dream career as an artist! Anthony has worked on some of the biggest movies in the Marvel movie universe. He designed Baby Groot, costumes for Black Panther and many more. You’ll hear how Anthony’s fake portfolio and his sketchbook landed him his first few jobs, how his life in the Philippines influenced the direction of his art, and the advice he’d give to artists who want to pursue the kind of career he’s had as a concept designer for blockbuster films.

i'd say accepting i wasnt gonna follow my first collegue career (that i already finished and worked on) and that i loved art to a point where the most i d advance at my first career, the more i d be drifting away of art D:

not me. but the director jim jarmusch(coffee and cigarretts/down by the law/year of the horse) won a scholarship for his film acadamy studies, and instead ofusing it to finance his academy studies, instead he used this money to produce his own, film. which is a terrific abstract movie, called permanent vacation.

I left home when I was 19 and moved to live, work, and study by myself. I lost my first job I got, and lived in really rough places, one a trailer with no running water. I never told my friends either, but I managed to stay positive and work hard and after a few years I live comfortably. Independence is rough but I think those hard times layed down a foundation for me that I will always remember

Marvel is really good at hiring lost of filipino artists to work on their comics and on character designs and look at the impact in the film industry, and all its subsequent genres have made. as a filipino artist myself this is a Proud to be Pinoy artist moment.

I jumped on a chance to be a scriptwriter for a small animation company, like Neil Gaiman said, it was a step toward the mountain, which is my dream to be an independent comic artist, i made a portfolio in 2 days and got accepted. I don't know if it is a good decision yet since i'm only about a month into my new job, but i did take risk, and it allowed me to get closer to my dream, even just a little bit. I hope that it will help my career and in the future when i look back, i want to be proud of myself for taking that risk. I wish good fortune come with my fellow artists, and that y'all achieve your dream

To Stan and Marshall for all your viewers trying to break in to the film business they should take a course at Gnomon School of visual arts in LA it is a school full of industry professionals who will see you and your work and even if they can not attend in person there is the online option as well as Feng Zhu's school of design Cinema and pickup a copy of Cinefex magazine and apply to companies who service the film industry they always need talent but they need to build their skills and a good portfolio. There is no substitute for hard work, it will show I enjoy Anthony Franciso's work another good episode all the best guys J

I know this is a bit of topic, but as art instructors who know the struggle in developing teaching curriculums: What do you make of Dunn vs. Parker? I've admired one of these artists for years, and I can tell that both are excellent teachers. I want to hear from people like yourselves who can shed some light on this topic. I know it's becoming a legal thing, so maybe this is an unfair ask, and maybe neither of you want to step in to aggravate an already ugly situation until more comes to light. But i'm torn and want a sense of perspective from people who know a lot about art instruction. Cheers.
