Taking The Hot Seat: An Interview With A Childfree Man 

Historically, societies have pushed the idea of having kids as a necessity and even guilt-tripping you for not having kids. It's absolutely wonderful not having kids at 40. I see my neighbors who are close to my age and still raising their kids. It seems miserable to me. But to each their own.

I'm 51, male, single, never married and knew I didn't want kids from a young age. Work as a primary teacher in the UK. I had a Jack Russell terrier as a constant companion for many years and a few relationships too. Currently content to be living my own life with freedom and choice. Good interview. Thanks.

It's better for me to be single/unmarried and childfree. Naturally, I am selfish introvert and I need to be alone after work. I spend my time, money and energy on me and nobody else.

The only "negative" that I personally experienced being childfree is it severely limits your dating pool. Oh well... Just have to wait a bit longer to find that special woman :).

Just if you think about it , it can’t be possible for all the people on this planet to have the same life journey (graduate, marriage,build a house , start a family , buy this ,buy that …) but society wants us to do so because of many of their reasons.

Amen!! I guess the only difference to our approaches to the "inquiring minds want to know" why I'm childfree is a very deliberate, cold and forceful reply of "mind your own business" or "when you put up the cash". No further explanation required. It's very unsettling to the recipients of that reply, especially those old enough to be my parents who have an entitlement thing going that whatever they ask they get the whole nine yards reply. Uh uh. I had a vasectomy when I was 22. I tell very few of my partners I've had it done, let alone anyone who doesn't need to know.

I share the same sentiments. This was great to watch as a fellow childfree man.

One of the arguments I have seen criticising people who prefer animals to children is to say that you will never see your animals go to university or attend college. But who cares about that? I wouldn't want any child of mine in State education nowadays anyway. And I wouldn't want to be told by the State how to bring up my child!

I'm a middle-age man and child free by choice and by circumstances. I've never had the urge to become a father. Not the slightest twinge. I've never liked kids. I just don't. I avoid them at all costs. I hate it when colleagues bring them into the office on a flying visit on their day off. Everyone else thinks they're lovely but I think they're repellent. I avoid them everywhere. I'm single because 99% of women my age have kids. Yes they're grown-up now but the women's lives revolve around their kids and you come a distant second. That's not for me. I prefer to be a lone wolf.

Knowing what you want before partnering with a woman is respectable. Guarding your body as a man is respectable. We need more people being smart and thinking before they do. I'm a childfree man too!

I've had a hysterectomy and when I say I don't want nor can have kids, people then start going on about adoption. Why can't people leave us alone? I never ask people why they have them. I couldn't care less.

I'm a childfree man and If I were to date I would definitely be looking for a woman who is and wants to stay childfree. I would like more quality time with my partner and kids would get in the way of that. Plus kids are expensive and you have to spend tons of energy and time on them. Kids are the ultimate time-thieves. These are just a few of the millions of other reasons why I don't want kids. Childfree women are what I prefer.

It's rare for a man to say he don't want children cuz most men do want children. Oftentimes they see the woman as the prize. I'm glad he's being honest. Truth to be told I don't want no children either.

I so appreciate you bringing your hubby on + hearing his side. I am currently dating a man who is separated + in the process of getting a divorce + has 2 kids with his ex + everything that comes with that + I am noticing I also feel no emotional attachments to his kids + in fact feel quite resentful of everything that surrounds him meaning his ex who dictates everything + the fact she needs to sign off on the schedule. She only lets him have the kids on weekends meaning every SINGLE WEEKEND he has them so dates are not feasible unless other arrangements can be made in advance or in order to have a date with him I have to put up with dealing with his kids all day; the shouting, whining, bickering etc + the fact they are 6 + 4, boy + girl they suck up all the oxygen in the room. The last time I saw them in which he picked me up from train station they happened to be in the van + I was left so overwhelmed by the fucking noise they made + ruckus I hardly spoke + just zoned out + tried not to cry. The little girl was kicking the back of my chair + I didnt see a point in tryin to make convo with my boyfriend as they would be abrupt. The thought actually crossed my mind for him to just stop the van + let me out on the side of the highway because their constant noise was grating on me. His ex is another piece of work too. I would never date someone with kids EVER AGAIN. EVER. As a childfree person it is not wise to date someone with children unless you don't mind investing into someone else's seed. I am constantly reminded of his past because he had kids with her + obviously the little girl looks just like her + is loud + bossy. I am so god damn angry + now despise the name Noelle as that is her name. I feel like the other woman + she plays such a huge role in his life.

It sounds like you both are on the same page. Good for you both as a couple. I will tell you as a woman in her 40s that the questions, comments and insults never go away for childfree or childless women in heterosexual marriage (I can't speak for other relationships). I have been married for over 17 years to a childfree man. Sometimes it gets really frustrating to be the woman who doesn't have kids in society because that is expected of us from the majority of people in general. I will say, I think it is becoming more common for people to come out as couples and say that they don't want kids in the picture. This makes me happy and I support your voices. I will also add that as you get older you see that peoples opinions and attitudes don't matter much because they are not living your life with you on the daily. Look around you....there are lots of people to associate with and lots of people to just ignore! So live your best life and don't care what others think. As you age....it just seems more and more silly that people even have an opinion or judgement of your life....because it just don't matter really.

If people ask why don't you have children just tell them because you don't want any demons in your house

We say “T-word” too 😂 I feel like I know your pups from Instagram. Interesting how even some of the questions are sexist (no shade at all to the people that submitted them). Can a man not be childlike when he wants to? So much of our social constructs are about giving UP certain parts of ourselves in order to bring children into the world. I once heard someone say that having a child* is like signing up for a lifetime of heartache - from them growing up, getting hurt, struggling as an adult. Why on earth would I want that? Also the idea of having children to create a larger workforce literally makes me cringe. What makes me especially triggering for some is being a believer in Christ but being forever Childfree. As a man of a certain age, I think it's not a bad thing for modern men to not get married or have kids. Not saying not to have meaningful relationships but I suggest not to create permanent situations or situations that would be difficult or expensive to get out of. Keep all options open. If I could make redo my life, I would set myself up to be single, but date, for life. No kids no wife.

People saying its different when they are “your own” is such a stupid thing to say!! Of course its different!! When they are your own you don’t have any choice anymore!!! Biology then forces it on you!!!

Male: Single, unmarried and childless. 1. The world is a mess. 2. I'm a product of divorce / seen alot of failed marriages, relationships. 3. I'm terrified of being a shit dad / shit husband / shit family man. 4. See too many deaths ( parents bury their children ). 5. I'm scared my kid(s) might turn out shit. 6. I live and fight for myself. 7. I don't trust anyone.

I've got a question, for my families culture it is expected to have a child eventually and for me I want to priorities myself and my career but there is a nagging feeling that is streesing me out about children. So the question is how does someone differentiate their families pressures an pleasing their family too their own wants and needs? Note: This was a very nice video, it was very informative in exploring the perspective of a childfree man.

I never wanted to have children but the use of "Childfree" comes across as the recent slang suggests as "Copium" ie hiding behind a new euphemism. To be ChildLESS is a choice: And as with all choices it's good and bad but in different ways. For example, if conditions has been more CONDUCIVE I'd then have opted to want to have children but as life took a different course that was more challenging and harder it became impossible to work towards a family life which is truth be told, the natural LIFE-CYLE of humans in the same way it is of other animals. Finally, dogs are not children though in caring for them, there's some sharing of features on a superficial level: The truth is, dogs are animals or canines and should be treated as such to OPTIMIZE THEIR LIVES in the way BIOLOGY dictates, not dressed in pink dresses and pretending to be a human child, even the use of such language feels dysfunctional imo and perhaps disrespectful to the state of the dog no matter the expression of love and companionship attempted to be conveyed, it's becoming too close to anthropomorphism which is fundamentally a selfish attitude to adopt on animals. No, embrace being CHILDLESS, and all the positives and equally all the negatives that entails: To accept life choices and be at peace with them as opposed to the attempts to wrestle with the fact via some sort of self-deception. At least the United Nations will be very happy with people adopting "Child Free" Ideology which will contribute greatly to a healthier Earth with less humans consuming all the resources.
