The thing about getting treated poorly when people don't know your cosplay is unfortunately a very real thing. On a con day I was with my friends who were doing teen titans and I was cosplaying a character from an old anime and people would walk by and say "wow your cosplays look so good" and never even acknowledge me and I had to awkwardly step out of the way constantly when they'd be getting stopped for their pictures every 5 minutes. I'm glad to know that i'm not the only who gets kinda crushed when characters don't get recognized. I feel that *hard* haha
@AnyaPanda

Oooof yes I feel that 100%. 😔💔 And the way people just kind of look you up and down and give you stink eye? I thought I was maybe overanalyzing things, but it sounds like this is a common occurrence for many people unfortunately.

Same it’s a weird bittersweet feeling. One time I was Leviathan from Obey me! but as his shark onesie outfit and some people gave me weird looks wondering who the hell i was lol. But the silver lining is that I still had a lot of fun cosplaying a character that a love and that at the very least, one person recognized who I was and they were so excited

Not gonna lie, I love being recognized by staff/non-convention people. My husband's Michael Meyers costume was a hit with the valet guys at our hotel at ACEN and multiple convention center staff stopped us for pictures of our Brock and Nurse Joy. I just hope we brought a bit of joy to people who are working what is probably a very stressful weekend! 😆

At NärCon last year (a Swedish convention) one of my friends I went with was asked by multiple people if he was cosplaying Bob Ross. He was in fact not cosplaying Bob Ross... he was not cosplaying at all, he was just dressed as himself.

as a cosplayer used to doing obscure characters god I can relate. Though when people ask for photos despite not knowing the character, that's a huge compliment! Also it makes being recognized even more fun! My Jean Descole cosplay often goes entire cons without being recognized by more than a handful of people, if any! Hopefully the new game reignites the Layton fandom and brings new fans!

It’s so cute that the security guard recognized your Emmy cosplay and really knew his stuff!! Not only recognizing her, but the need for a prop camera, is AWESOME. It’s fun being recognized by anybody, but there’s a special charm in being recognized by non-cosplayers. Once I went to a chocolate shop after doing cosplay photos, and the person working recognized my Persona 5 cosplay! The unexpected things really stick with you 😂❤

Yes, when people treat you badly cause they don’t recognise the cosplay! Every Layton cosplayers reality aha. I was at a small con once and was excluded from the individual cosplay pictures (they took pictures of each cosplayer who came) because they thought I was an oc or something when I was Aurora from Layton, or when I’m Luke people think that’s how I dress lmao

whenever i go to a con ( doesnt matter how recognizeable the character im cosplaying is) i always have reference photos of whoever im cosplaying screenshotted ! its handy in many situations like if someone - doesnt know who youre cosplaying - knows the character but thinks you look like someone else instead - has seen many people cosplay the character but not where its from -simply wants to see an image of the character you can quickly pull up the photos and recommend the show/game/movie/etc that its from in a nice way- and its easier when its in your photo roll so you dont have to awkwardly wait for wifi or wherever to load lol

(until the one magical day, I will attend a con; cosplaying may take longer tho.) I am sorry that you were mistaken for a character you don't like tho. that doesn't sound fun at all. the story about the security guard recognizing Emmy is so sweet!! such a nice interaction. (I have yet to check the games out unfortunately, life has just been too hectic and busy T_T but it's still on my list!)

Honestly you are not alone in the feeling of "Having a more obscure cosplay has people not treating you well". I feel like the way people threat you when the character you cosplay is less recognizable or less popular character is in general a little more shitty. I cosplayed some genshin impact characters with some friends of mine. I cosplayed Xingqiu and my friend cosplayed chongyun (they're besties in game) but he was asked for pictures A LOT and the people that asked for the pictures just completely ignore me and just looked me up and down.

I went to my first con this year and on the first day I was Yuri Plisetsky from Yuri on Ice and my friend was Stocking from Panty and Stocking. I wasn't really recocgnized but she was pretty popular. More people recocgnized her than they did me. I get it because the YoI fandom is dead in the cosplay department right now and it was a closet cosplay on a budget. Only one person actually recocgnized me and that's because he was selling his wife's fanart for the show and when we showed an interest in the Yurio hair clip he kinda put two and two together. It kinda hurt a bit but I still had lots of fun and got lots of pictures anywa.

I cosplay Kyrie from Final Fantasy VII and while she's a very minor character, it really hurts to not even be recognised by other Final Fantasy cosplayers! Only like one Japanese guy at Gamescom knew who I was and alllll the Cloud's, Aerith's and Tifa's walked right past me 🤣💔

I often cosplay very odd side characters. And most people don’t recognize what I’m dressed as but if 1 person knows and gets excited it’s soooo worthwhile. I have much more meaningful conversations with people that recognize a character from something that’s not main stream then any time I’ve been something popular and get fifty passing comments of just “nice ____ costume.” But if there is only one fan that knows you they tend to be really excited because they don’t get to see that character very often. 😂

I have almost zero with people mis-reconizing me, but a lot of times they just don't know or ignore me. Which tbh is fine with me, I'm not a fan of being on pictures. What is fun is that I have cosplayed Shireen Baratheon [GOT] so much that a lot of people know me / that character, even if they never watched the show [that much/far]. :D

This might be an unpopular opinion but there is no obligation of the person looking at the cosplay to acknowledge your cosplay especially if its obscure and the cosplayer shouldn’t take it personally if that person doesn’t want to acknowledge your cosplay. As someone who cosplay and is a cosplay viewer, i don’t get care if my cosplay doesn’t get recognize but i also wouldn’t villainies and negatively think of random people who doesnt know my cosplay.
@AnyaPanda
@AnyaPanda Год назад
You missed the point. People aren't obligated to recognize everyone's cosplay, but they shouldn't be treating people like they're less than just because they don't know who they're cosplaying.
@purpleoctogamer

The whole being treated as lesser when you're cosplaying a character that isn't well known is definitely a real thing unfortunately. :( I remember taking my Persona 5 Joker cosplay to a couple of conventions (he was the first ever cosplay I brought to a con) and being recognised and asked for photos a lot because Persona 5 is one of the most popular games in the series. But when I brought my FeMC (Persona 3) cosplay to the same con later in the year, I wasn't recognised at all and kept having to just awkwardly move to the side when my group was asked for photos (they were cosplaying from P5) or pose off in the corner when they did decide to include me. I have a feeling the exact same thing is gonna happen at my next con as I'm bringing Blaze the Cat for the first day and FeMC for the second day but I don't mind as much since I'd rather day two be more relaxed and I want to actually be able to look at all the stuff that artists and other traders are selling without getting stopped. It's the first time I'm going for a whole weekend too!

10:34 Or Katrielle, possibly. I know the feeling though; of the three PL cosplays I have (Luke, Alfendi, and Ernest for those curious) Luke is by far the most popular. We're kind of an endangered species, in that sense. But hopefully New World of Steam fixes that!

i'm in a weird position where i wouldn't call the series i generally cosplay from niche, but also definitely aren't "mainstream" cosplays - my best example would be my marie cosplay from splatoon - it's a nintendo game and popular at that, but way less common at cons compared to other nintendo franchises (mainly zelda and pokemon), so i found myself recognized much less often than i would be if i cosplayed someone like link. it's a bit disheartening, but i've found that if you have a really cool prop/build, you'll find people who complement you/take photos of you even though they don't know who you are. i have a replica of marie's weapon (basically a sniper rifle) and it's HUGE, so i got a lot of attention from that alone.

ECCC 2023 was also an interesting experience/experiment for me aswell. I was cosplaying Susie from Deltarune and it was the first time I had done full body paint for a cosplay so I was anxious to see how it would go. I think the funniest part was that like 30% of my interactions with people were like “Omg I love your Susie cosplay!!!” And the other 70% of my interactions were people just being gobsmacked by how purple I was. SO many people stopped me and were like “WOAH MISS YOURE VERY PURPLE” and also asking questions about how long it took and stuff like that. It was just interesting how many people were floored by seeing someone in full body paint…at a convention with a lot of people in full body paint.

@@AnyaPanda Ah! I wasn’t expecting a reply, thank you! To be fair i was cosplaying her light world form that doesn’t have a lot of skin showing (just face neck hands and knees) and I was also wearing gloves so I didn’t get paint everywhere 😅 but it was a fun first experience to say the least. I was worried that people wouldn’t recognize me so the fact that I got a lot of reactions/pictures because of the paint made me feel cool in a way LOL

I understand what it's like to not be cosplaying something super popular and have people treat you different at cons and cosplay events I tend to be more obscure characters and end up being bag holder while everyone else gets pics. Hazard of cosplaying from newer and more niche media I suppose. But those few people who do recognize you make it great.
@Lillybe

I have cosplayed a lot of characters that no one really knows. It's a surprise when someone does recognise you. I just accept that people don't care about who I'm cosplaying and go in with that mindset. I tend to do a lot that are popular in Japan but not known much after it. Personally I don't go up to a lot of other cosplayers when I recognise them, I always feel people are busy (even though I love it when people come up to me.) So there may be a lot more people who knew who you were cosplaying and appreciated seeing it!

Sadly I also relate to feeling less valuable when you're cosplaying a lesser known character.. of course you get less attention but it feels really shitty when you're attending a con with someone who's cosplaying a popular character and they constantly get stopped and are making friends while you're just like... hanging out the background feeling invisible. :') I think it's just that people get so excited when they see a character they love that they forget that they're freezing someone else out. We probably all do it to some degree so it's something to be aware of!

I get what you meant, I feel like people kind of see you as less when you dont cosplay a super well known character or from their fandom? I cosplay Genshin mainly, I went to a con a couple of weeks ago as Denji because I was in a crunch and didn't want to botch my other cosplays. I felt so much less valued. Like my cosplay wasn't worthy of attention and I barely chatted with people when usually I legit get crowded with attention. It really made me sad but hey, on the bright side I got to meet one of my best friends

I wanted to comment and also say that I also understand cosplaying a character that might not be as recognizable or not in mainstream animes. I was at a con with a friend, where they were cosplaying Boa Hancock from One Piece and I was cosplaying Yuki Cross from Vampire Knight. We would get stopped because people would recognize Boa Hancock, but they wouldn't even acknowledge me. Also there was a videographer who taped my friend and didn't even ask me to participate. It absolutely is not a good feeling, I love my Yuki cosplay and I love how she makes me feel (which is what matters the most). But I have come to learn over the years that if you're not cosplaying a popular character, from mainstream media or anime that feeling of getting recognized can really hurt (though it is something I am used to). Love your content and cosplays Anya
