I remember randomly renting this back in the day. I knew nothing about it. But, i had watched Tales from he Crypt a bunch. So figured it would be decent. I loved It! I love when you find movies that are really good and know nothing about.
I personally loved this movie. It had an interesting plot, but became a little silly at the end with the villians pants energy. Other then that it is great. The ending at the bus stop is great.
Piercing the eyes to destroy creatures of hell is a reoccurring motif for this movie's writers, Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris. It's definitely because "the eyes are the windows to the soul" since that's the explanation they use in the series they made right after Demon Knight, called Brimstone. Brimstone expands on a lot of the themes and lore here to the point I suspect they took the rejected trilogy idea and made a series out of it, or they wanted to flex some concepts they weren't allowed to use because of the Tales from the Crypt lable. Brimstone is about an undead cop sending escaped souls from hell back home. Once he takes out the damned person's eyes, they had nothing to contain their souls on earth and disolve in neon colored mist that comes from their eyes exactly like the demons do here. I'd recommend the series to anyone who likes this movie. It's really good, but aired on Fox during the death time slot so hardly anyone's heard of it.
Brimstone was a great series, one of the UK terrestrial channels had it on (in the early hours - similar time slot to Lexx iirc); might have been in the early years of Channel 5
I think the reason he doesn't ask to empty the key before putting it in the suitcase is because it's been emptied while setting up protection for the hotel.
I got to meet Billy Zane this year. I told him he was awesome. I told him that, yes while voice actors deserve their credit, HE was my favorite Ansem (kingdom hearts). I told him “one last thing before I go. I never thought I’d get to tell you this but, I loved your cameo in Zoolander. However, for some reason, I stop the movie and watch a movie with more of you in it. And as strange as it is, it’s always Demon Knight. He was surprised, commenting how that was an odd tone shift... I said “yes, and you’re character being evil aside, you look like you’re having so much FUN with the roll.” He then commented on how much they let him improve and have fun with the roll. Then we said our goodbyes. Just figured I’d share that
When I think of Billy Zane there are 3 films that come to mind right away. Dead Calm, Titanic, and of course Demon Knight. He was so good in it and I don't think this film would be talked about at all if he wasn't in it
This was a movie I randomly rented from a video store back when video cassettes were still a thing. I didn't know anything about it other than it was a Tales from the Crypt movie. And I'm glad I did because I fucking loved it. Thank you for reviewing this forgotten gem. I'm glad you're giving it a little more exposure.
I saw this when it first came out on video and loved it. The demon effects were surprisingly unique and intriguing and I loved how the Collector tried to tempt everyone reinforcing the biblical theme. It made me look forward to see Billy Zane in other movies but he's not been able to recreate the magic he had here from what else I've seen of him.
The idea of keys going to other planets gave me the idea for a rather spooky image of Apollo 11 crew walking on the surface of the moon and, in the background, you can see The Collector looking for the key - still dressed in his normal clothes.
I saw this in theaters and Billy Zane played the bad guy so well it was really the first time I noticed him. So I do think of this movie when I think of him!
This is one of those films that would always air on tv late at night or in the wee small hours all through the late 90's and early 00's. You could always count on this or 'Breakdown' being on.
A throwback! I saw this on opening weekend back in January of 1995. So many people have no idea it exists. This will always be on my favorites list. Great review!
I love this movie and I loved the characters. One of my favorites growing up and I had it saved on VHS. I don't know where it went. Edit: Also! Why did they never fill additional bottles with blood? It's obvious that it's the blood with power regardless of its container. And it apparently stays liquid and "fresh" indefinitely.
Thanks for uploading such quality, well rounded reviews. My husband and I discovered your channel a few weeks ago, and we have enjoyed watching your videos together. My favorites so far have been your Eternal Darkness game walkthrough, the Resident Evil series, and the Dark Castle movie reviews. Keep up the fantastic work, and we look forward to future notifications from your channel. 💙
Also, these film clips are clearly from before its Blu-ray release that messes up the colours (blueish sheen throughout) so basically fans are well advised to keep their old DVD or LaserDisc.
Thanks Lyndsy 4 requesting this, I saw it with my brother at the dollar show a long time ago and its a great memory to well, remember lol. Great work on the review!
Okay before I watch this, THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING THIS!!! I remember seeing this as a kid and being confused, yet entertained by Billy Zane’s over the top performance. He’s still really hot, but I feel like he’d stare at me with that creepy smirk he always does.
You forgot to mention that Peter Jackson's The Frighteners was originally going to be a Tales from the Crypt Presents movie, but Robert Zemekis loved the script so much he suggested to Jackson to make the movie a stand-alone piece sans the TCTC connections.
why would I mention that ? yeah its a tales things but if I mention everything we'd be here all day, So lets not say forgot, lets says "chose to omit" information that was not immediately relevant to this film.
It's a small thing, but I was always under the impression Billy Zane was the eponymous "Demon Knight," not Sadler. Sure, he kills demons, but the Collector is demon nobility. I thought it even clarified that, but it has admittedly been a long time since I've seen it. Still, great review! Agreed that it's too bad they didn't explore these ideas more in-depth in other movies.
Deusdaecon Reviews My mistake then, maybe a case of my brain remembering it how I like it more than how it was. Like I said, been a while since I've seen it. Thanks for clarifying.
Shoot, when I saw the crucifixion was being brought in I assumed our hero would be the roman that stuck the spear of destiny into the side of Christ and was supposedly cursed for it. That would've been a great way to play up the penitence angle potentially.
I'm a huge Tales From The Crypt fan. When this film came out I was like this is so good...the next two not so much. Billy Zane is awesome in most of his roles.
I'm thinking maybe it's just an obvious weakness. Like the demons have to concentrate all their power into a part of their body, so they use the eyes as they are an incredibly small target, there's two of them, and they're exposed so the resulting release of energy is a deterrent to engaging them, whereas if it was the heart or something most of the energy would be contained inside the demon's body. It may also be a ritualistic thing in that, by exposing their weakpoint so openly, the demons receive more power. Also there's that old crack about the eyes being the 'windows to the soul' so...
I always heard the "broom paradox" as the more antiquated "Ship of Theseus", in which the boards on a ship are replaced over the years, until the final board is replaced.
Dude! I recently watched this film and still loved it. This is prior to the review and will edit after the review is over. EDIT:: I agree with the very minor plot holes you pointed out and yes, this movie should be well known in popular culture. Hopefully, it will become a more well known cult classic in the future.
I dont know, they say the eyes are the window to the soul and the soul is what gives us life. the beings not having souls but follow the same idea, and shooting them in the eyes destroys the source that gives them life. just a thought.
I fucking love this movie, Billy Zane will and should be remembered for this role. If you want Deus I can show you some synopsis shorts I have written out for sequels, prequels and spinoffs of this movie, I believe this is one of the most underrated horror movies ever made.
Hey, Deus... I just had this really weird thought. It's kinda dumb, but hear me out. What if there were two of the demonic keys on Earth and the gold trim on the puzzle box from the Hellraiser series was made from it being melted down? Along with the dark magic fueled Pinhead's world?
Well for a few years the bits of Tales From The Crypt were removed from Ritual entirely from what I understand. It was only years later apparently they put it back in. Which really didn't do it any favors since the movie was terrible.
The movie does a pretty good job following the book, somethings are different like the collector is called the "Salesman", Roach gets smashed by a corvette the collector spawns out of thin air in the book so I see why they had to change his death LOL I've read the book a few times, if anyone has any questions and want to know what is different between the two hit me up.
@@deusdeaconReviews Nice, never knew that, I remember reading the book b4 I knew there was a movie, the book is pretty dope, if you ever get a chance you should compare the two.
@@mikelitoris2252 LOL I was in the same boat back in like 2006 I actually read the book first and the book did say that is was being made into a movie, then I watched the movie and been a huge fan since
It's nice to see the praise for this film. I watched it back when it was new and really enjoyed it. As a kid as well, it was scary. It has aged really well.
