As a series veteran, and someone who's been researching everything about the mechanics in this game, I am beyond impressed with this video. I even learned something myself. Switching between characters mid boost attack to continue the combo with said character? UGH that's SO SEXY. Awesome video man.
Thanks a ton! Also, being able to switch party members between active and reserve while in combat is HUGE! I can't wait to see combo videos where people make a combo involving all six party members!
@@BacklogBattle I know there's someone out there who's already figured something bonkers out. I'm being patient as my rare acquired PS5 is coming soon and I wanna test things out myself first. Super excited. I'm subbing to follow your work. Keep it up man!
@@MadeInBmore23 Yeah, that should be used to up the pressure on the opponent, not as a reactive or defensive move on your part, since the damage will stack up on you real quick, like Law getting critted quick!
"If you feel confident you won't get attacked, use arts" - Dude this tip is so simple yet highly effective, it improved my survivability while being more aware of what I am doing next.
@@justindallman8943 I got to the point after the second boss where I more actively swap to people to reposition them. Alphen: I'M A HIT EM WITH MY SWORD! Me from Shionne PoV: Ok but you could you not eat the entire dragon breath attack? AND WHY THE F*** ARE YOU THAT CLOSE ANYWAYS RINWELL!? Rinwell: Gotta show Law i can take a hit too. Law: Challenge Accepted! I will die doing the most damage with my awakening or not fight at all. *dies* Guess I won't fight then.
Appreciate how you broke down everything clearly and did a short recap at the end of each section, it gets difficult for a new player like me to remember all these things !
As a newcomer, I HIGHLY recommend Shionne over Rinwell for beginner at-range character. Rinwell's magic layering system is actually pretty complex and locks you into animations much longer than Shionne's arts. Also Shionne is the second character you get. Loved this video and this game! I usually only play shorter games, but I'm 70 hours into this one and keep going I'm enjoying it so much, on top of the amazing story.
Really well done video, my man! I'm a Tales veteran and have reached a point in the game where I'm struggling to beat some of the more powerful stuff in mid to late game when some general turn-based strategy with a small amount of button mashing is no longer effective enough! I had forgotten the ability to switch characters in and out from previous Tales games and had basically not even tried Mystic Artes much after previous Tales games made it so hard. Now that I know different ones have different recovery times, I can decide when to safely build up to a nuke or just use a quicker/safer option rather than ignore them entirely...
As a series veteran, my piece of advice is DO NOT MASH BUTTONS. This game is exceptionally punishing at times, so be prepared to treat hard fights and some normal mob battles with more than a single braincell.
Are you talking about some harder dififculties(i play on the one above normal) beacuse i have quite the opposite experience and as all jrpgs i find that this game is quite easy simply beacuse you can essentialy grind to Victory. And no boss stand a Chance against 15 Orange gels, no matter how strong he is.
@@KrolPawi HARD difficulty is still tame, when they meant higher difficulties its usually CHAOS difficulty, in that difficulty your party could be decimated in a flash if you dont pay attention to enemies pattern especially on post game super bosses.
For a side note, shionne's boost skill also useful to taking down jumping enemies. This one isn't included in her boost skill description, but it informed by her during balseph boss battle
One additional piece of advice for people struggling with CP; disable resurection arts. These things are extremely costly and life bottles are a lot cheaper than cp recovery items and if you often craft you'll be needing for gald pretty often as the biggest source is the few sidequests and chests that contain gald (fights don't really give much even at higher difficulty)
@@BacklogBattle Honestly I never even thought of it on my own after playing a good 25h on hard mode lmao I hit a point where I was spending more CP than I recovered so I looked up if anyone had found a decent way and someone was like "why not just turn off the reason why you're out of CP in the first place?" hahaha
That said, once you unlock fishing, grinding money becomes pretty simple, as the fish can be sold for a surprisingly large amount of gald. Just a matter of whether you're willing to do the fishing.
@@Madmushroom64 Ah yeah naturally there are ways to get money, that was more meant for those going straight for the story (which I assume most people that are new to tales of will do)
I'm a long time veteran of the series, and I have to say the hardest thing to get used to in all of the Tales games is that you can't just spam inputs. I recommend newer players practice measured, attentive button presses on the smaller enemies early on to train yourself. Great video Alex! I haven't grabbed Arise yet (definitely going to soon) but I'll probably refer back to this later.
Another 12 out of 10 video. Easy to understand for both beginners and experts! I just downloaded the game as my collectors edition was delayed. Can’t wait to sink in!
Considering all the options you have in combat, I feel like they did an incredible job mapping the default control scheme. Like having L2 bring up not only your reserve party members, but your reserve artes as well feels simple yet very clever. Great video! My copy should be arriving in the next couple hours and now the wait is even more painful lol
Great analysis there! Tales of Arise's battle system has some deep and fun mechanisms. It's a huge step up from previous games! So thanks for sharing 😄👍🏽.
@@eliajshdjddj You're right. Graces was fun, I really loved how each characters had 2 fighting styles. And I wouldn't mind having a remaster for both Graces, Xillia or some localized ports of Destiny DC and Rebirth!
Great explanation man. Really appreciate it. I usually play turn based rpg, so when I started playing tales of arise, I was like - what on earth is happening on my screen, LOL. Anyways thank you again for the consice explanations.
This is my first Tales game and I'm coming here as a fan of the Xenoblade Chronicles saga. I love my action based fighting RPG's but I never felt like I actually understood what was going on during battles and was just fluking it along. When I had to fight Dohalim, I managed to win on my 1st attempt, but only because I abused my healing items. So I deliberately kept restarting the fight until I won through skill. It's at this point I came to your video because for me to enjoy this game I want to know and understand what it is that I am doing during the fights and not just button bash and hope for the best. I will take on what you said in this video and hopefully enjoy my battle encounters going forward. Thanks
2:38 Not being able to not cancel artes has always frustrated me. I played both Tales of Arise plus Berseria and it had these problems where i would try to combo the opponent, but then my unfortunate timing happens where the enemy does a super armor attack that i cannot dodge due to no animation cancel which causes me to then take damage or even getting KO'ed.. Still, i do appreciate a well made guide on the game though. Nice job!~ 😇
I think its also worth noting that when you're in the recovery state after your attack string, you can't attack, but you can still dodge, so you're not entirely vulnerable.
As someone who played a lot of DMC/Dark souls etc and just a little bit of tales this is so usefull. Great video. Never rly could get into tales somehow. And i have rly tried... Think this game will be different. So far, 10 hours in, the combat and exploration feels so much better then past tales games too me. This may turn out to be one of my favourite rpg's of all time!
Glad to be of help! I had the same problem with earlier Tales games too until I figured out that they’re designed like fighting games! Once I realized that, everything started to make sense!
Absolutely fantastic, thanks so much for clearly explaining the basics, huge help, just about to start up the game. Great video, glad I found your channel. 👍🏻
Great video, some really helpful tips for someone like me starting the tales games with this one. The one thing I’m not getting the hang of is keeping that combo going still only 6-7 hours in atm though
I though you would've explained the nuance of each character special feature (Scorching attack for alphen, grenade ammunition for shionne, artes stacking for rinwell, awakening for law, guarding with kisara and rod extension for dohalim). It is essential to learn to use these feature when playing each character to maximise their potential and it's also very fun to vary gameplay.
Im still fairly early in the game, just in the 2nd city/cyslodia but so far i felt like i didnt get the full potencial out of the combat which seems way simpler but deeper than the 2 previous games. A friend recommended me this vid so time to learn
Thank you for this awesome tutorial, step by step and straight to the point. At first i was like why my arts cant be cancled into a dodge eventhough i got the skill easy to dodg/guard and i thought it was a bug or something haha, thanks to your guide i have gotten used to the mechanics, epic love it 👍🤘
I'm a button mashing, hack and slash person at heart, so it is going to take some effort for me to enjoy this combat. I made the mistake of expecting it to be just like Tales of Berseria, so when I found out I couldn't put a chain of artes on each button, I wasn't very happy. I'm playing other games right now, but hopefully, I'll get back into Tales of Arise soon
I train the old school way, I just got all 4 characters....so I'm starting from where I began and fighting my way all the way back to ganonbelt or whatever his name is, he kicking my ass! Gotta go shonen mode on him.
@@BacklogBattle I finally did i,t this guy keeps doing that spell when his health is low until you die, that was f***** up there were times when he had low HP and he would murder me, what a rush!
Here's a tip from someone who played this on the highest difficulty: Make a strategy page which tells your party to do nothing. When certain bosses use big moves at higher difficulties, they have the potential to wipe your party with one or two ticks of damage. I've found that the AI struggles with this concept, and forgets/forgoes dodging at critical moments. If you set up an "always do nothing" page, they will almost always correctly dodge/block correctly. As pointed out in the video, you can adjust strategies to your liking. Higher difficulties demand that you master strategy swapping as well.
Huge tales veteran hear. You had a great introductory video but there is a lot of nuances you left out. 1st shinone boost break bonous comes from enimes in the air, which means the enemy doesn't have to be flying type. This means if you break a enemy and luanch them in the air you can use shinones boost when your air combos is about to end.. 2ndly. Breaks and boost breaks make it so artes can fill your gage. When the blue diamond gauge is filled it can be one shooted with a D pad combo. (This is very important for gaining more experience and score.) And should be your fastest strategy to take out enemies. Iron mask break works on enimies on the ground.with the bonous being if the are a downed enemy The strategy you recommend is fine and even I would recomend it for older tales games, however, action economy is much easier to manage now considering you have quick travel and inns are free to replish health and CP. As opposed to old tales games where you needed to manage TP and finances for each dugeon and journey to the next location. So you will actually get better returns on all out fighting sense all out fighting with there artes will keep your opponents from retaliating, keep your combos high, and make it so you can get that sweet insta kill animation. My favorite being supreme alter personally. Lastly I would recomend the fighting style that gives out as many insta kills as possible, it makes gringing faster, you get bonous score, exp. And SP. Also there are skill trees that replenish health and AG based onperfect dodges and critical hits so anytime you can boost your luck I highly recomend it.
Thanks for the additional tips! My goal for the video is to create foundations for folks to understand some of the basics of combat, so I think I’ve done a good job at that! I’ve found that anyone who wants to learn how something works that it’s best to establish the conventions first rather than going into huge detail on the nuances of the gameplay. The hope is to give viewers the push to experiment and learn these nuances on their own, then, if needed, they can look at other more advanced videos to get better at it! I appreciate the time you spend on your comment though and I do hope that others take a look at what you’ve written!
General tips for those new to the series: as tempting as it can be, do not charge head on to the enemy. Roll your way to their rear and smack the normal attack until enemy in break status then spam those artes! Rinse and repeat. If things gets too spicy for you, know that theres a craftable accessory substat that makes enemy target you less often. Imo, the enemy NEVER target you at all with that . Idk its just me or i just like to smack them from the rear lmao. Im playing in hard mode and doing good at it. Normal mode should be a breeze for newcomers as long as you follow the tips given above. Cheers
It's not about just watching the gameplay, but also hearing some of the context! Naturally, you'll need to be familiar with some of the terms from the game since it does do a good job of teaching people how to play the game. This just adds a little bit more to give people the confidence to really experiment with the various systems in the game!
This is SO helpful! I learned things that I never figured out when playing the demo. I haven't been out to pick up my copy yet but these tips will definitely come in handy when I play later tonight. Thanks!!
I also think Kisara is very beginner friendly, especially if you are accustome to the old Tales of gameplay style the fact she goes in Defense instead of dodging means you don't even need to learn ennemies pattern, just goes in guard and even if you miss a perfect guard you'll get like a 75% damage reduction because of that I found she is the easiest melee character to survive when you are in control and the character you are less likely to die with, as other character rely on dodging which means no safety it's either you succeed in dodging or take the full damage Kisara is the only character to have an in between option like that, and you can really play her just playing the old Tales of games as she play very similarly, plus she does good damage and just in case as Self Healing arte, I think she is the most accessible melee character because of that.
replaying the game and planning on using kisara mostly as soon as i get her she looks hella fun i used rinwell and law mostly before and to the video i can agree i finished almost the whole game playing as rinwell shes defo a good character for starters
@@alexmaganda5827 Well I haven't finish the game yet but really on Hard Kisara as main with Defensive/Aggro accessory Shionne, Dohalim and Rinwell as teammate disable all their art save Spells (and healing spell for Shionne) definitly the safest party so far ^^
As a newcomer to the Tales series, your video is beyond helpful! Thank you for being so informative without just forcing a single type of playstyle. I’m a few hours into the game and it feels like I’m not making full use of the combat mechanics. Maybe I’m just not absorbing the tutorials well enough, but the way you’ve laid everything out makes sense of the mechanics super clearly. Much appreciated!
I don’t like imposing my play style on people because everyone plays games differently! So if there’s a way for me to reframe certain things so more people understand, then I feel like I did my job! Thank you for watching!
@@BacklogBattle true. To be honest, I think u can cancel attacks into dodges in the Bayonetta series but I'm still terrible at dodging lmao Which ones can I dodge cancel out of anyway?
This is a great overview of the battle system! I remember following you after watching the atelier Ryza battle system guide. love to see this kind of overview. I’m gonna share as much as I can, this content deserves to be seen.
I seriously do not get the combat in this game. It's the first time i played anything in this series. I watched the tutorials, as many videos as I can find, and it just ends up with me cycling through R,E,and F while left clicking occasionally and trying to dodge. None of the combat feels intuitive to me, i have to assume i'm missing something. I just got my ass handed to me Lord Balseph. I think i was way under levelled, but still my strategy is face rolling and counting on Shionne to hold things together. Is there an FAQ or video that breaks it down as if I'm a 5 year old?
as mentioned here, boost attack really powerful. i recommend anyone who started to prioritize learning the boost skill so you can extend your combo longer
OK this is definitely gonna be helpful when I get the game next week and the fact that you can swap characters in if they have a gauge filled up....... It's going to be so much fun comboing in this game evil laugh! Anyway not bad for a very 1st School lesson and can't wait for the next ones........ Currently imagining Shinonne and Kisara as teachers and Rinwell as a student aww!
@@BacklogBattle Oh yes the famous 200 hit combo or even further beyond that AKA what all of those really good combo videos keep doing and almost feel like that they're mocking you that you can't do it....... I definitely know it'll be possible to do it in this game especially without cheating.
I love this format, it's a bit different from what you usually do but I really like it, it's very easy to understand. I have one question though do long combos have other benefits that experience points?
Great video. As someone who started the franchise on Tales of Destiny 2 (Eternia), I am very disappointed with the battle system. Tales of Grace F was peak Tales in terms of the battle system. This system lacks depth and involves a lot of randomness.
I just came to this game now, a couple years later, when the DLC on sale caught my eye and drew me to the title. Somehow I missed this when it came out. Having an absolute blast with it, but the combat is very tricky. This video was immensely helpful in increasing my enjoyment of the excellent story by making combat so much less obscure. It looks like an action game, but it plays more like a strategy action game.
My main problem is, that I can't see the enemy attacks when all of my teammates are fighting. This gets worse when enemies come in groups and attack all at once. The last boss I fought was Lord Ganabelt and I hardly could see anything, let alone dodge his attacks. Maybe I am just bad at the game, or I miss something.
For Ganabelt, I actually stopped doing Boosts and trying to attack and studied him for a while. When I did that, I was able to recognize some of his attack patterns as he does have a ton that he repeats. The less chaos you can cause, the better you can see what's happening. Part of Tales' combat is taking the time to assess what's happening, especially during boss fights and lessening the initial noise so that you can see what's actually going on.
Thanks bro, this really helped me starting out, I've never played any of the other tales releases, the whole vid was packed full of useful info, thanks again.
Loving the game but worse thing is that I just got Law and he seems to go for the furthest. i wish I could make it were they attack the same unit as me. Great vbideo
I can't believe I have made it so far into the game without understanding what I'm doing lol Gonna be more mindful from now on thanks for the great vid!!!
Problem is there are some situation where u are situated with more enemies of the same kind. Example: if there were 3 of shielded renans and law's boost is only single target that would leave the 2 shielded renans still have their shields, another is those enemis who can cast artes some of those enemies cast at the same time leaving you who to cast rinwells boost on to cancel. It would be nice if they added some AOE attacks to damage the majority. But that's just my opinion. Also thanks for the guide man!
I love that "Blah Blah Blah' makes an appearance... although, as someone who has fully completed Vesperia many, many times (3x 1000 GS on XBOX, and Platinum on PS), I hear Rita's voice saying it over and over in my nightmares!
Ive been playing and loving this game for the past month. In the past I got stuck fairly early in Tales of Vasperia and dropped it. For the most part of this game I have been playing on moderate.. however.. in the 2nd realm I had to start playing on story difficulty for most of the major bosses. Im near the end now but wouldn't be if it wasn't for the story difficulty.
Somethings not mentioned fully 1. You need to break an enemies guard to launch them into the air. They recover guard the second the word break disappears 2. The combo counter is based on the enemy not the player. Meaning the combo counter goes up as long as someone is hitting that enemy. This lets you hit 100+ combo easily 3. Combo damage decreases if you repeat the combo. So use a different Art each time when you string combos
Love this game so much, I've already sunk 20 hours into it within less than 2 weeks. I just wish the soundtrack was stronger, sadly thats my biggest gripe, the music is just not very good. Still, I recommend it to everyone.
Dodging in between hits with alphen restores 1ag Start SB, dodge then attack with the second hit of your basic attack. You'll regain 1ag while still keeping your combo.
3 basic questions: 1. Sometimes enemies have a purple logo around them that fills in. What's that? 2. What do I have to push when the heroes icons is flashing blue? 3. Is there anyway to turn off the voices during battle? They are so loud and I have to constantly decrease and increase the volume. Thanks for your time!
1. They are casting a spell (or astral arte how it is called in universe) 2. any of the directional buttons that has a character portrait. As far as I gathered it doesnt matter which, I think you can influence who will be on the flashy moves that happens when triggering it 3. That one I cannot say for sure. I don't think there is.
Man, I desperately want to love this game, but the combat system has been so clunky for me (I'm at the 3rd kingdom). I'm fully getting called out at 3:00.
Hey bro! Great video, but I am confused about something So you see on an arte, the description, where the little symbol is that says what element it is. Next to that is a name like Rising Pheniox, I get that but why is there other names that are not related to fire abilities? Oh and this is for alphen Also im only on the second stage where there is snow and snake eyes Thanks!
Is it normal to do team combos? Like knock an enemy up with one character, than switch to another to do an air combo, while charging for a magic attack while having shoot them in the air? I feel like I'm playing this game wrong because I'm only fighting with the main character.
Team combos are more of an advanced maneuver, so I only recommend it if you’ve mastered playing as each of the characters individually. It’s something you can work towards and look forward to! So I’m the meantime, learn each character.
What's the best way to charge the boost attacks? I wanna start having book girl absorb enemy artes but she never has her boost ready. Same goes for Zephyr's son with shields. He never has boost ready when I need it.
A lot of this has everything to do with Skills, and I’d say try to get as much Boost building abilities as possible! I have a Skills 101 video that goes into the details of what you should look out for
thank you, im at the 4th lord and having a great time, but finding some of the systems are not explained well in game. thanks for clearing them up for mw~
Great vid ! A little tip about Rinwell Boost attack is that this can hit multiple enemies in a not so small area ! If you have 2 enemies close to each other casting, she will stop both of them (but the charge will be of the one you targeted).
Hi. New player here. Great video! I just want to know how to use the blazing sword in some other form. I can only trigger it using swallow slash or something.
Great question! So the reason why you can only trigger it using Swallow Slash is because you unlocked the specific Flaming Edge extension for it. If you look at the Arte itself, you'll notice something called "Flaming Edge" in the description. And chances are, the text to its right is colored yellow, which means it's activated. There are six Flaming Edge artes, and the title Blazing Sword - which unlocks via main story - will let you unlock some more, though there's different ways to unlock the others! Hope this helps!
My tip: Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash. I've already plat. the game so I'm not sure why I'm here but still...great video! Very useful.
Literally feel like I’m just getting exhausted in the game constantly, in the combat. I’ve just got to the second area, haven’t unlocked Rimwell yet amd im on moderate.. I’ve played a few tales game’s before zesteria and berseria if that’s how it’s spelt and really enjoyed them although never finished them, but never had that problem.. I’m hoping to go for the plat!
I bought the game but I have to wait until tuesday to play it I'm a soulslike game veteran but a complete tales of beginner, what difficulty should I chose? (I love hard games but I hate enemies being "HP bags")
The enemies in Arise are a bit hefty when it comes to health, so I will warn you that this is indeed a thing. That being said, the beauty of the game lies with being able to combo people and interrupt, which does require some sort of beefiness with regards to enemies. I highly recommend trying Normal first to start. Then, if you feel like you need more challenge, just increase the difficulty by one and try it out. You can change this at any time!
The fact that you can't get away with button mashing is exactly why I love combat in the Tales series so much. I hate it when I'm playing an ARPG and I'm pressing buttons yet hardly feeling like I'm in control of what I'm doing
I’ve been told that the original creators were inspired by fighting games and even though they removed some of the more fighting gamey aspects in previous games, I can still feel that spirit in Arise. I mean Shionne’s Boost is literally Iron Man’s Proton Cannon in Marvel! LOL
Same. Battle gameplay that offers instant-gratification when it comes to attacking doesn't have as much impact compared to ones that require strategy/skill. I find button-mashing games fun just for a very short while.
What are the stars next to your artes in the menu they seem like a mastery system but idk if there like the old games where more stars and the more you used a arte the stronger it became or unlocked new ones
i didn't expect to like the Semi-Auto mode so much, it's not bad to be able to pay more attention to combos, and what the enemies around you are doing.
Most of the game I feel like I'm poking at the enemy. Thanks for the tip! I didn't know you can switch out party members mid battle. That'll definitely help!
Got to spend several hours playing the game last night! Yes, your guide was extremely helpful! But I was reading a different tips/tricks post elsewhere, and I realized I still don't understand the difference between boost strikes and boost attacks. (That was a terrible design choice to have the two things worded so similarly AND apparently the same button presses.) I've been paying attention to the diamond filling in around the character portraits to launch what--I guess--are boost attacks. So, what's a boost strike? (Or do I have them backwards?) And which is better to use? Use both? Oh, and I can't figure out how to switch characters, but maybe the game isn't letting me do that yet (I'm about three hours in but I've been taking my sweet time looking around!)
You described Boosts well! Boost Strikes only occur when an enemy is low health, there’s a diamond filling up around the target market, and you’re racking up lots of combo hits on them. Then, Strike appears, and you press any D-pad direction and a super cool attack hits! Also, you should be able to change characters at that point!
@@BacklogBattle OK so I must not be paying enough attention to the targeted enemy. I'll have to practice up some more when I get a chance to play tonight. Thanks!
