This was a fun one to put together. I might do more like this when I acquire decent stuff in the future

You forgot to mention the most redeeming quality of that second Bailey #5 . That beautiful smooth sole . After all they are FAR superior to those others with the funky lines in them , which I hear was just a big gimmick . Lol

I would've paid no more than $50 if that would've been me. Great video. I really like that Craftsman No 7.
@justplanefun
@justplanefun Год назад
I went over $50 on it but I’m not worried about losing money on the deal. The No7 sold already so I’m well on my way to making back when I spent - and I’ll have plenty of planes and parts left over after that.

Pretty cool, I think you did fine here. I have a #6 sized Craftsman identical to the #7. It was the last plane I bought locally. It is in pretty nice shape, didn't take much. Everything else I see locally now is missing too much or broken in some way but they ask for useable condition prices! I am very pleased with the ones I have bought from you, they didn't need much attention at all. Thanks, MJ!

It stinks to live in a tool desert. Even here in Virginia they can be tough to find so I too end up having to buy stuff online mostly. Too bad we can’t all live in the Northeast where old tools are abundant.

Well, doesn't the Millers Falls blade and chip breaker that you found on the Bailey #5 fit that Millers Falls #8? All these seem dirt cheap to me... some day these will all be recognized as priceless 👍
@justplanefun
@justplanefun 5 месяцев назад
If I recall correctly, the MF No8 size is a No3 equivalent so it should be smaller than the No5
@justplanefun
@justplanefun 5 месяцев назад
The reason these old tools aren’t priceless is because they were produced in such large quantities

Great video as always, MJ, very enjoyable and informative! I’m sure you’re already aware, but I can confirm that the Craftsman block plane was definitely made by Stanley. Love those English 220s.

Interesting video. Regarding the Stanleys, would you know if the lever caps were chrome or nickel plated? Thank you.

25:48 I bid $75 but not enthusiastically. TDMW as I’m not a flipper or a seller and no parts I need. Great info though. Thanks MJ!

I have a 60 1/2 like that brown one u were showing but mine is a light bluish color, do u kno around when that one was made, THANX again for the videos
@justplanefun
@justplanefun Год назад
The blue ones were made in the 1960s. For bench planes, the type 20s were made from 1962-1967. Stanley’s other planes (block planes and rabbet planes) were also blue

Just watched this on the app on the TV and rushed upstairs to leave a comment. Thanks so much for the insights from a picker's perspective, they were interesting and informative and I might need to adjust some of my pricing expectations 👍 One quick question if you have the time, the Millers Falls lever caps having basically no value seems odd to me. Is it just because of the dominance of Stanley brand recognition in the marketplace or is there actually something sub-par about them? Not just theoretically {?} _meh_ like the hollow back. I actually like the style of them quite a bit and if I were rebuilding my Frankenplane no. 5 I'd see fitting one of these as a definite upgrade over the Ross lever cap that I have currently installed 😁Honestly the Ross does work just fine, I just hate seeing it LOL
@justplanefun
@justplanefun Год назад
I’m gonna have to go back and listen to it again. If I said the Millers Falls lever caps were worthless, I definitely misspoke!

Thanks for that MJ . I'm in Australia and found one at a markets , which is rare over here for a US made one. Now I know it must be a type 13 , both the tote and handle are broken so I'm not sure if it's a good buy. 👍
