Thanks for taking the time to update us. On the intro- I loved the old one and I'm slow to change. That said; I think I'll grow to appreciate the new one as well. We'll retire spidercows and cool hats together. On AI- it's the buggy whip argument. Change is inevitable and its smart to integrate AI into production. On twitter tension - I'm not on twitter but I text. When people get set on proving a point I will probably say " Lets just agree to disagree" or " Can you provide more information because I want to understand (verify) this?" Excited about your projects. Have fun following where your passions lead you. 🤗👍 I rescued 1 + 1 + 2 birds and now I'm flocked and loving it 😂

You have a flock, that's wonderful! I loved some of the old intros too, but I also like to move the furniture regularly. I've always been this way - feeling like I need a fresh space to focus and move forward. I accept that I'm weird that way! :-) Change is indeed inevitable and I do feel like we need to adapt. I think the trouble is that AI is advancing faster than we can have a discussion about the rules it should be considered with. That creates a lot of anxiety out there, and it's showing!

As an artist, I was a bit up in arms when AI art was first introduced. Like other artists, i suspected that I'd be replaced. Considering I have a full time, salaried job and no kids, art for me , is just monetizing a hobby. Therefore, I don't have as much stake in the AI war anymore. All that aside, the point that I want to get at is, for me, in MY EXPERIENCE, Ai Art has not effected my client base at all. As you stated, it does generate cool stuff but it's essentially just an algorithm so it misses the mark sometimes. Due to this, I've had people still reach out to me AFTER attempting to generate their image via AI first and feeling that it wasn't quite right for them and deciding to work me with instead. I think Ai is a handy tool depending on what you need and when it doesn't work, you still have experts. Kinda the same way you can groom yourself to a degree at home but if you want a complex haircut/color job, you'll pay a person. Or if you can do DIY projects at home but if it's electricity and you have no experience with that, you hire an electrician. I don't think computers will EVER ERASE genuine human interaction, touch, intuition, etc. Ai is just a tool. "Why so serious?" 😂
@DavidBadurina
@DavidBadurina Год назад
Hi Jerr! Hope you are well! This is a thought-out and reasonable take. I'm honestly surprised at everyone jumping into gatekeeping mode over AI. It's not going anywhere, we have to learn a way to do what we love to do around it. I imagine quite a few people try and try with AI art and don't get anywhere, so end up getting in touch with a digital artist in order to finish the job, so to speak (or just do it right). Will things change when you can use AI seed values to create a repeat of a designed character? Yes. And at that point all bets are off because literally anyone anywhere would be able to create a character and use that same character in different comic panels, etc. We aren't there yet. I try to look at it from a few different angles. If I'm an author, and I create an image to accompany my work, I shouldn't be looked down upon for doing so. I'm not selling the image, I'm selling the writing. If I'm an artist, and I use Chat GPT to create a description or marketing material for my work, likewise. The "work" is original art, and the tool creating anything secondary is just that - secondary. Still, fascinating discussions to be had and I'm sure this will all change in the near future!

The new intro is pretty cool, I like it. I am loving MidJourney and have been blown away by how rapidly the quality has improved. In a lot of industries throughout history, technology has disrupted at first, and I see art, writing, and eventually film making to be no differnent as AI improves. Traditional creators will always have a place with those who seek authentic genuine pieces. That is why hand made bespoke fashion often demands higher prices than mass produced factory garments. Great to have you back buddy, just my luck I chose the last couple of weeks to have a RU-vid hiatus!

Love the intro! My thoughts on AI. It’s a conglomeration of things. Just as much as our own thought patterns. When we get an idea, what’s the odds that it’s not an original idea? Probably isn’t. We’re just inspired & info we’ve acquired is that idea. AI is the same. I do think that artists should divulge that they are using AI for whatever project they’re working on. I’m very objective since I’m super technologically challenged. David please use that cat on a poster that says “I hate Mondays”😂. Good to see your face David! Stay awesome dear one!!❤️

Hopefully mostly positive change, as we live, learn, and grow. AI is a truly complicated issue. Brave New World here we come. Definitely struggle with imposter syndrome. It can often keep us from sharing our creative selves. Figure our own inner critic is the harshest. Hopefully, the beta readers give honest and helpful feedback, and you can discern which statements are truly helpful. Got a song in my head turn turn turn the byrds

Nice to see your smiling face!!! To begin: I am currently writing my 6th novel. I have sent queries to literary agents on 3 of them. I got a close but no cigar type response. "You write well and your story is interesting, but it's not what we're looking for." I'm just making the point that I know what it is to write a novel. The guy who was being anti-beta reader sounds like a pain in the ass. I love my beta readers. I may not agree with them 100%, but I do take their suggestions to heart, and I do fluff the area they questioned. Criticism, aka a kick in the ass inspires my creativity. I hear the Rocky Theme when someone says something like "I don't get why that character stuck his nose in the honey pot." I examine the character's behavior, and I realize the motivation for said behavior isn't clear. The whole political correctness obsession is more than annoying. It is messing with humor and spontaneity. As far as AI - that scares me to no end. I'm sure someone will write a dystopian novel about AI. Cheers, and I'm sorry this is so long.
@DavidBadurina
@DavidBadurina Год назад
6th Novel! Amazing! There has been a lot of talk going around about full requests happening, only for rejections or flat out ghosting to happen right afterward. I'm not sure what's going on in the industry, but it seems really ... strange. The key to a good relationship with a beta reader is that they are a tool to help you, and you can value their honesty. Like I said - aggregating the responses is critical so you don't get carried away in revisions. I listened to feedback and made some adjustments, and at other points I was thinking, "Nope. This is exactly how I want it, and while you don't like the passage now, you'll understand it later." And I couldn't agree more - humor has gone out the window in favor of not offending anything or anyone! Best of luck to you! Keep putting those words down, I'm cheering for you!

The discuss of AI art is important. Plain truth is AI would do better doing a CEO, assistant administration, business planning and strategy, marketing and banking than art. AI would be great at stock market. AI would be better at government than it would be at art. My point is CEO's trying to save money with AI may just AI themselves out of careers.
@DavidBadurina

@isabelle1976

AI art : i think it's important not to be dogmatic on that subject and I won't thow a stone at you ever. Everybody has to choose how to lower his costs and weight pros and cons. The important thing in my opinion is that if you could make another choice you would do it. An idea is that you could compensate in a way. For example you could decide that you need to make this choice now but remember to sponsor the work of an artist by bying one of his/her pieces later in your life when you will be able to. I mean really CREATE an opportunity to buy later because of today. Not do something you would have done then anyway. I admit that AI brings a lot bigger concerns in me than the job kills it will bring. It is worrying but unfortunately there are even bigger threats on our world because of AI use. A LOT bigger in range of consequences. I am seriously anxious about it
@DavidBadurina
@DavidBadurina Год назад
"if you could make another choice you would do it" - that's the key right there. I'm not going to use AI art for a cover, ever, as I can scrape together the coin to hire a cover artist for a different work. (I'm doing my own cover for The Steward, of course). I'm not going to knock an author for making that choice, though. The cover is secondary to the words. I share your anxiety about it, and I just wanted to throw the topic out to start the conversation. I'm happy to revisit it in a more in depth way in terms of deepfakes and other implications it may have. We live in an interesting time, for sure.

AI art is something I use a lot for my videos and has also helped me to raise quite a lot money for charity, so I dont have a problem with it, but it has its flaws! I feel my description of what I want the AI to produce plus the "random" numbers I choose might also be regarded as my copyright. What I have noticed is that even with modifiers, it's very hard to reproduce another picture in the same vein using AI and only a real artist can do that. So if an author wants a book series to gel visually, then its probably not a bad call to spend the money. After all, most people still do literally judge a book by its cover.
@DavidBadurina
@DavidBadurina Год назад
I've tried creating two images that were similar in different sessions and you are right, it is VERY difficult to do so. but it has also made incredible leaps and bounds in only a short few months, and that acceleration doesn't seem to be stopping. What happens when AI art is capable of generating an actual "character" that you can re-use and re-visit? You'll have people creating comics with AI art that never would otherwise, you'll have kids books, branding materials for businesses, etc. etc. We are at the very genesis of something that has HUGE impacts across our society.

On criticism, I'll just mildly say society has developed into a I-will-destroy-you-banish-you-angrily-over-anythingatallnomatterhowtrivial-10x-allduringthisweek Mode. I actually like your segment on criticism with rules of thumb 1) Ignore the delivery 2) Is the source credible 3) Does the criticism have merit 4) If so can one use it for self improvement. Enjoy your travels.

@DavidBadurina Год назад
Appreciate that! I'm very excited for Joy-Jitsu to hit the world. We have a lot planned for it and it really is a heartfelt project from friends with like-minds. You aren't wrong about society these days. There's just a lot of competition, anger, and ego out there. I tend to view everything through a lens of absurdity, so most of the time it just entertains me, but I have my issues I feel passionate about as well. Thing is, I know and expect others to disagree, and if there's a closed mind out there, I accept that I can't change it. My goal is to move forward, be better, and if warranted, share my thoughts. It's not hard to stay steady. Thanks for sticking around here!

Twitter : for my sanity I stay away from this crazy place. Critique is not always easy but is I think an interesting way to challenge our thoughts, logics and accuracy of it... when it is constructive, which isn't usually the main word which will come to mind when thinking about twitter. Also I like nuance and the nb of words limit doesn't help there either. Also there are enough haters, reality deniers, trolls and bots driven by the same kinds on RU-vid for me, i don't search for a wilder place 😅. But I understand you have to go there and wish you courage , patience and steel nerves.
@DavidBadurina
@DavidBadurina Год назад
Haha courage patience and steel nerves are part of the game there. However, I do what I think is a good job limiting my exposure to the haters on there. You're always going to ruffle feathers if you have any opinion on anything, but the reality is that random people on a social media app have no sway over me, have no control over my life, and they do not feed my kids or pay my bills. So if they're going to be awful in some way, I easily block and move on, it doesn't bother me. There are a lot of really awesome people out there too, it's just a matter of finding them!

1) What is your opinion on the writers striking (among many things) to be protected against AI being used instead of them? It seems like a weird double standard to me, because I saw many writers happily embracing AI for their cover artwork and illustrations (thus, completely replacing a potential artist) but at the same time being so against AI being used in the fields of creative writing. 2) It's not just small self publishers using AI. Here in Poland, there's already at least four major publishers that fully use AI for covers (the funny result is that they all look pretty but kinda same-ish, yesterday when I went to a store and saw a bookstand with novels from one publishers that used a human artists that had this nice comicbook-y feel to it and I was immediately drawn to them and went to tell my grilfriend (who's both a writer and an artist) that she needs to check those out. So as of now, it feels more like AI is good for whenever you just want "Some nice picture" but sucks if you want to develpo a unique visual style for your brand, which eventually might put the artists with unique styles in a high demand (at the same time lowering the interest in artists who're just good at replicating a mainstream look). Which, for a moment, I thoguht might be a good thing because it would drive artists more towards develpoing their own styles instead of following whatever's the hot look. Buuuuut.... I'm afraid though that it's not gonna be a case for long since you can now just download your favorite artist's porftolio and train a model off of it (which in my opinion is a problem and should be somehow regulated or be based on some kind of licensing model).
@DavidBadurina
@DavidBadurina Год назад
Great discussion! I think striking about AI is silly, to be honest. It's here to stay, it's not going anywhere, and it's time for everyone to find the new normal. First, a few things ... 1) A writer using AI art for the cover of a book is fine with me. I'd prefer an artist gets paid, but some people may not have the means, and I won't knock them for it. The reason is that the cover art is NOT the main selling point of the work. That's the 90,000 words. If an artist uses AI like ChatGPT to create a blurb for a piece of art they are selling, I don't think they're replacing a writer. That's silly. So what is the main work? If it's writing, and they use cover art that's AI generated, so be it. If an artist uses AI text generation to create a blurb for their artwork, I'd have no problem, because it's the ARTWORK that is the product, the text accompanying it is secondary. If the AI Artwork is a major selling point (a picture book) or the text generation is the major selling point (a short story that's AI written), then I have an issue. You are selling something you did not create. State that it is AI generated, or you are being deliberately misleading. 2) I would not support a publishing company using AI art for their book covers. Publishing companies should know better and respect artists, but they won't, because they are in it for profit. This is different than an independent person paying for everything out of pocket and trying to find the best, most affordable way to get their work out there. AI Art (for now - you are correct) is good for one-off images. I use it for some images on my website, or maybe a "cover image" for a short story. But you can't create recurring characters. For now, it's not replacing comic books, but at some point in likely the very near future, you'll be able to create a consistent character with a seed value, and you will see comic books with consistent characters fully AI generated. We have entered a new world. I think the issue here is that things are changing too fast for anyone to keep up. Just a few months ago, AI could not draw a person with 5 fingers. Now, the images are accurate, and stunning. It is evolving very quickly. For me, if I'm going to publish a novel, I'm going to take the extra time to raise the money to pay an artist for the cover. If I'm distributing something for free (short stories, for instance) I'd be inclined to use AI. I'm not paying an artist to distribute something free of charge. Fascinating questions, and no doubt a discussion worth having!

Further point on the subject of beta readers. Here’s a real life analogy you can bring to the table. I’ve been doing stand up comedy since 2019 (my family will argue that start date). The hilarity of debuting in live comedy 7 months before the pandemic hit aside, Stand Ups write then revise, revise, revise our jokes and sets (sometimes over years) based on audience reaction and our developing character/style. I’m not asking the audience to write the jokes. The same material can work in one city and bomb in the next based on a huge variety of factors. While Stand Up is accepted as a “customer service” or populist type of writing, I also bring new bits to comedy Writer’s Circles. What other comedians can give me over an audience is where things might be off. An audience will laugh or not, comedians can use their “ear” to suggest but it’s up to you as a writer/performer to “solve for x” in the way that is authentic to your voice. Comedians accept that it would be unwise to just add new material to a paid or headlining set without working it at a few Open Mics. Beta readers seem to serve a similar process to the realm of publishing. No one is suggesting the 10% or more of improvisation and crowd work seasoned comedians do with the audience isn’t also comedy, however, few of the great comedians don’t work their bits among their circle and on the road before filming their work.
