I want another sit down with these same guys now. After Ricky called out Hollywood, after the slap, and after the Louis controversy. I want to hear Jerry's take on all of it and hear all of them discuss the state of comedy now.
So much has happened after this show... a brit, a jew, a black guy, and a red headed mexican walk into a bar... greatest comedians of the 21st century.
I truly hope the guy who did that bit finds his way to this video and realizes that 4 of the greatest comedians of all time both laughed at the actual joke, talked about it for 10 minutes, and built on it the funniest moment of their sit down together.
I showed it to him. He was amused. Gave up comedy some years back and doesn't regret it, but still performs regularly on guitar, rather brilliantly. Mr Kevin Sullivan, one of the funniest men alive.
@@cargoshipgaming Gervais being all nerdy and ruining it is a huge part of the reason that the whole thing is so funny in the end. "Does he do the whistle" wouldn't have killed nearly as hard without Ricky's BS coming before it.
It's worth pointing out that Gervais was producer on this show, and was functioning as a sort of host. It wasn't intended to be "4 Equal Comedians," it was presented more as "Gervais loves these guys and wants to do this thing with them."
Adam Harrison yep. I'm not a fan of his whole appearance here. It's just important that people remember it's not just "four comedians," it's "3 comedians and the comedian who's hosting the show"
***** I don't think Ricky is that funny alone, but I have grown to love the guy a lot because of Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington. Who are Fucking Hilarious especially when with Ricky!
Adam Harrison It's just his personality. I don't think he's trying to "justify his place in the circle" I just think the others are more laid-back in their demeanour/approach. Some people ask "Why?" a lot, and are genuinely inquisitive people that cannot dismiss points easily (hence he's an atheist). Gervais is more of a debater as the others like to move from point-to-point. I may be wrong but it seems like you don't know Gervais well enough, and are just an American christening a British comedian based on a 50 minute show. Watch Seinfeld and Gervais on - 'Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee' - it may change your mind.
Heisenberg Why did you feel the need to mention that Gervais is an atheist? Also you have to remember Ricky is the 'youngest' stand up there, he started much later in and has achieved a hell of a lot. In addition to writing the office/extras etc
i didnt get the comment, or the avatar, or the username. only thing that made me giggle is the last name. a giggle that lasted only 0.5 seconds because i have many many things to hate life.
"Does he do the whistle?" Chris Rock with the funniest moment in this hilarious hour of great comedy. Four excellent perspectives on humor from four maestros.
What I realized is the difference between the average comedian and a true comedian was that line. 25 years of Louis CK, a good comedian, having this story about a failing average comedian with the "sitting on a cock cuz im gay" bit and he didn't come up with a punchline for it. In 2 seconds, Chris Rock comes up with the punchline for the bit.
@@rayan8031 Ricky and Louis have confirmed this on an episode of the Opie and Anthony show. The conversation started before recoding as they are walking to the set and they just casually sit down and continue. Entirety of it was 5 hours, can't remember how much of it was recorded. If you find that O and A episode you'll see.
@@ComedyJakob yes. Out of the experienced comedians, he's still going and succeeding. He would bring the same kind of viewpoint of comedy. What else are bringing? Dane? Mencia? Bob kelly? Fucking vos?!
@@moodlampActual Dane is likeable, Mencia was legitimately always shit. Norton threw Louis under the bus. Don't know the other two so take what I say with a grain of salt, im obviously not into this as much as some of y'all
There are only so many comedians on this level and are able to intellectualize it like this. They’re expensive to get in a room and honestly, hearing them talk too much about it would take away from the magic.
I could watch these guys talk everyday. It's the most interesting dynamic. They all have different views, styles, arguments...it's incredibly engaging. I'm convinced that comedy scratches a different surface in this world, which reveals deeper and deeper layers, that the audience simply isn't aware of until they examine why they laughed in the first place.
+Giuseppe22 there is a part to the song 'sitting on the dock of the bay' where they whistle. Chris Rock wanted to know if the performer did this part for his version of the song 'sitting on a c*ck 'cause I'm gay'.
To me, It feels like there's anger or tension throughout most of the conversation, but in reality I realize they're actually displaying unity with different types of comedy from different types of comedians and doing a damn good job at it. I like it.
As long as people will accept crap, it will be financially profitable to dispense it, including masterbating in front of any one, what is your address ? I feel like masterbating now...............
@Ella Rose Strongly disagree. In my opinion, whether or not we think what he did was messed up or not, he brings a quite different, introspective , and most of all, extremely well articulated perspective to the conversation. Having watched it many times, I feel like he kind of acts as a glue that holds it all together, almost like a host.
Louis CK only has only one condition with regard to his big career resurrection, he is going to drop trow and flog his tiny ginger dolphin! Enjoy the show, chuckles! Luckily, he likes dump his bit at least once a year to make room for his creations. It makes me wonder if there is really a vas deferens between the old material and the new? Further, are the audiences more testy these days or is he still leaving them prostrate with laughter?
This has to be the perfect mixture of comedians telling it like it is in the world of comedy. Any aspiring comedian should watch this at least once a week. So much knowledge and experience in under an hour.
all these guys are used to having a platform to just monologue and go on for as long as they want, and its so funny watching them try to figure out how to not talk over each other.
@@langtryvlogme I just started standup and want ur OPINION.Please SUBSCRIBE if u LOL. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k5zO72KOBbIa.html
I liked to spoof songs in College and I came up with that Dock of the Bay bit myself over 20 years ago! I doubt it was me He heard it from, but as silly as it is I felt a bit of pride watching these comic legends laugh over it!😀
Only difference is that Carlin literally had a special every year while i don't think CK has done quite that. Though he is insanely gifted. Probably my favorite
@Daniel Clark yeah but he appeals to a larger audience. You can not even like standup and like Jerry Seinfeld but if you love standup you probably don't like Jerry Seinfeld.
@@jw7305 no, it was put on RU-vid 8 years ago and released on hbo in April 2011. It was 3 months from being 10 years old when I wrote that comment, but now it’s def been over a decade.
Critical Nobody and the people who are offended seem so ignorant to how Rock and CK have attacked the n-word in their bits. If you saw Bring The Pain, you know EXACTLY what CK is referring to when he says “nigger” in this show. CK is practically quoting the bit in reference to what Rock is saying about him. If you saw Chewed Up, you know EXACTLY why CK would say “nigger” instead of “n-word”. While it’s unfair to expect everyone to be familiar with every aspect of all four careers involved, there’s a context for everything that’s going on. It’s a manufactured controversy.
I’m confused as to how a white video game reviewing neck bearded incel tells me how I should feel about two white men saying nigger lool it’s beyond me
It's a testament to Chris that he can patiently sit back, listen earnestly to the conversation and the other three waxing poetic about the craft for an hour, and find the opportunity to destroy the room with one offhand line, "Does he do the whistle?"
I went to a comedy show in Boston years ago where Dave Chapelle showed up with zero material. Just started interacting with the audience and building jokes from it. Might have been the funniest show I've ever seen.
It might be because it was all specific to your audience and comedy is built largely from shared experience, so it very well could have been stuff he’s thought about enough for it to BE a joke but it was presented to you as stuff only you guys are hearing and that intimacy gives another layer to that shared experience, making it more effective. Brilliant
Andrew Dice Clay has an album called "The Day The Laughter Died" that is basically him going onstage, making terrible "jokes" and insulting the audience. You'd think it'd be terrible, but it's hilarious. Probably the only actual funny thing the guy really did.
"what was your first bit you thought was funny?" Ricky: "oh i remember this well." Chris: "he just made it last week." and everybody missed that shot. shame.
not that they missed it, it was just too obvious for their level. Those commedians grew up roasting each other every single day..you can only imagine how high the bar is.
Yep. You can genuinely tell that the conversation is a little bit difficult for Chris in places. Look at his face when Ricky says his comment about poor people.
This is such a great conversation because it feels honest. They are laughing at each other, disagreeing, saying things which obviously offend or annoy each other. Feels behind the scenes.
32:58. There is something beautiful to be noticed here. The humility and beauty of a regular person recognizing the fact that people went out of their way to see them live. Comedians are real MF’s. They get it. We’re not special but we have something meaningful to say. Thank you for hearing it.
Agreed Jerry Seinfeld is from a different time. He's looking at the older guys who literally came up with 30 minutes of material and did it again and again for 20 years. In my mind the best comedians are truly artists. And like musicians they have to have a body of work. Doesn't have to be a new hour every year, but you have to have a discography, at least some different sets/specials/jokes as you move on. If you only have 30 minutes well then you are the same as a one hit wonder in the music world. We enjoyed that bit, but now you're done.
I agree with you, and yet, you have a very new attitude with regard to comedy. Usually the new is peppered in with the old. This only really changed industry wide in 2005.
I think it's harder to get started as a comedian and last today. You don't get as much of a chance to develop your craft while you suck because of, you guessed, RU-vid and video sharing. If a young comedian has a bit that is gaining traction and "goes viral" it'll be on the internet at some point during his trips up and down the road. Then there could be a buzz around a comedian that isn't ready for mainstream popularity. It kind of happened to Dane Cook when his career took off before he was good enough as a comic to handle it.
This is fascinating. Besides the obvious, also just the little social dilemmas that come up. Like Louis wasn't having a conversation with everyone, he was pitching to Jerry. His eye contact rarely left Jerry, and every opinion he had he looked at Jerry for approval. But also Jerry and Ricky had a slightly antagonistic relationship. Ricky not being afraid to disagree with everyone, and Jerry disliking his crassness. The "That was very funny Ricky.." sarcastic jab. Amazing.
But then again, they often were the two that turned and laughed with each other, seperating themselves from the other two. Jerry and Ricky just have that relationship, from what I've seen in other interviews/interactions.
Even when they're not telling jokes or laughing I love it. These guys are all famous for their perspective in one way or another which holds up the comedy. Steel in the walls.
This comment brought out some early childhood feeling I haven't felt for a decade and a half, and it's also exactly perfectly how I feel about this video
After watching this for the 4th the editing is really perfect. They know when their conversations are tailing off then immediately goes to the next punch
I think people saying Seinfeld acts like he's better than others don't get that when he says things like that, usually that itself IS a joke. You have to pay attention to tone and context. It's meant sarcastically.
***** He , along with Larry David created one of the most successful sit-coms in U.S. TV history ......If one uses $ as a measurement , he has achieved a level of success that puts him in a most unique catagory .
Ricky Gervais is honest and hilarious, so honestly the slander against him I don't understand lol ^^ but hey, to each their own. I love Ricky so I'm not annoyed by him
Chris Rock breaks the mold of "if you have to explain a joke it is not funny." Dude somehow took a rule of comedy and broke it while leading us on a path of comedic understanding. Like he made the path of understanding his joke as funny as the final pay off the joke itself.
@@ralek592 I know I was fucking dying at the joke. Pretty sure Will got a good chuckle out of it before his whip cracked his ass up on stage for finding it funny.
What a privilege it is to be able to see this. However it’s pretty frustrating how many time Chris Rock doesn’t get the chance to let his developped view on a topic be heard. I would have loved to hear so many bits.
I don't know why you felt compelled to steal this post from another video and then post it on another video (verbatim). Oh, that's right. Your life is an empty void if you're not receiving likes on RU-vid.
That may have something to do with the way television and radio works in Britain. The BBC controls everything and if they don't like something, you're a virtual pariah when it comes to broadcasting anything outside of the internet. They are all about perfect production & organization and have pretty strict rules about how things should work. I think Ricky's apprehension over how he's being presented on telly has a lot to do with that sort've "indoctrination" from the BBC.
He gives too much respect to Seinfeld...i dont like Seinfeld , i dont think hes funny, and hes so smug ....gross person !!Gervais is THE ABSOLUT SHIT there and everywere...the fucking guy is briliant!!
What an honor for Jerry to be in the presence of these three great comedians. I hope he gets there someday. Keep up with those open mics Jerry! It only takes time.
@BumbleBeePenis ! I’m willing to bet that most people aren’t going to understand wtf you’re talking about. You’re trying to be funny? You really think he steals jokes? Elaborate
