IDK what it is, but the way they hit the "MYYYY house" line right at 2:11 just makes the whole performance for me. They put everything they've got into that line.
Yes! And the way Byrne isn’t even looking for the next “that’s right!” The whole thing just oozes beautiful energy from amazingly practiced and talented people
I think it’s how in sync and comfortable everyone is. There’s so much power in all their voices all at once too. It’s the highlight of an all around amazing performance.
Talking Heads is one of those bands that sounds amazing on a record, but somehow even better live. David’s voice is amazing, that kind of vocal consistency is rare.
Read Byrne's "How Music Works"; he talks about this problem, and the converse, of bands that sound great in the studio, but can't translate to stage. It's a non-trivial process.
I hope people realize how in shape the lead singer had to be in to sing and perform the way he did. That is not easy. Amazing job by the entire group also. Incredible fitness.
This is my all-time favorite concert movie. No backstage antics, no interview backstage while the rest of the band is playing, interrupting the performance (in the film), just the band coming onstage, and in this case, David alone with a boombox, then the original members and finally the full band and they just play a great show! Beautifully filmed.
I remember seeing this in the cinema in Amsterdam when it came out and people were more than once applauding after a song ended. That is quite some achievement for a performance on a screen
Yes, truly how i feel about the film too. I actually took one of these tiny wee superpotent things to really get into it and i was totally out there, the performance and film was just stunning and surreal. Unforgettable day at the cinema for me that.
I was at this show, opening night of a 3 day event at the Pantages theater. Front row, stage right. I was in my early 20s then, I'm in my 60s now and, to this day, with more than a couple hundred shows ranging from hardcore punk and thrash metal to old school Country Western and some great jazz, under my belt and Stop Making Sense was, far and above, the best musical event I've ever experienced.
Yes. I love bands which are for the audience. All genres: Black Oak Arkansas Osibisa Madness The Rolling Stones The Manband (from Wales not the USA) Jonathan Kelly’s Outside All gave fantastic performances that live in the memory for ever. ‘Experiences longer than things’
I saw the new 4K remaster of Stop Making Sense in theaters last week, and had to go back and see it again this week. Both times, this performance specifically blew me away. Last week's viewing was in IMAX and it felt like I was there in person watching the concert, it was so powerful. If you get the chance to see this in theaters, by all means go!!
Arsonist is one letter from arborist…nothing shows who your real friends are better than blasting this - wherever you are. Well- psycho killer…and life during wartime…and burning down your friends house…that really brings it home
Don't be mean. I do have a dear friend whose house was burned down by an arsonist. Horrible experience. Generations of memories lost. Fortunately, no lives were lost. But a family was fractured and broken. [It's still a great song.]
God, kids today don’t know what they missed in the 80’s! Remember seeing this at the midnight movies in my SoCal neighborhood back in the day along with Dance Craze, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Quadrophonia, etc.👍🏻
I was old enough to see these people live, but was too busy trying to stay out of trouble (e.g. holding down a job took all I had, that and trying to go to school while dealing with a lot of disabilities that I didn’t know I had then, beyond the ones I knew about!) to go see them.
When I was in college, the local movie theater played "Stop Making Sense." When the film started, the whole audience ran towards the screen and started dancing for the next two hours.
One of the truly magnificent bands ever, who could always cut it live. Albums from Buildings And Food, Fear Of Music to Remain In Light were a stunning trio.
I also saw this in IMAX a couple weeks ago. Everyone knows the Talking Heads but I'd never seen them live. Wish I had. I was blown away by this performance. And as concert docs go, this has got to be one of the best. Too bad the camera couldn't have been on the whole stage the entire time.
Always loved burnin down the house and take me to the river. The Spiritual energy David brings to the pieces is like gospel to me. Awesome live performer…
Good referance to SPINAL TAP's movie!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!! I love this band and this song too. On my list of top ten's for sure right along with Once in a Lifetime. That ones great live too!!!! Check it out if you haven't already!!!!
One of the best acts/bands that ever came out of the 70s. The music is outstanding, always was and to this day has not aged a bit. That is the mark of genius that was David Byrne and Talking Heads (as they all had writing credits for one thing and another). Brilliant. Thank you for posting.
TALKING HEADS’ CLASSIC 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense - Number Four on Rolling Stone’s List of the Best Music Documentaries - will return to theaters later this year with a new 4K restoration courtesy of A24. The 1984 concert film's soundtrack will also be released in its complete form for the first time in August . When I first saw this in the theaters EVERY Body was dancing their asses off in the isles. More energy on the screen than far too many live shows I've witnessed...
I'm repeatedly stunned by how hard David and the others work during these shows. I know it was years and years ago, and they were young; but damn! What energy!
I appreciate David and the band much more now than back in the 80's. Back then it was all sort of just background music to my ears. What was wrong with me??? This stuff is epic.
That's understandable. If you have music from today in the background it kinda gives one an audio labotomy. Then a track from that era comes on and revitalises you. Of course it's epic and friend there is nothing wrong with you. Regards Lee
By far my favorite song in the performance. The whole thing was great, but the energy with this one is absolutely unmatchable. It was incredible seeing the 4K remaster in theaters.
That was a time when I became a fan of the band. I bought the vinyl at once. The cover of it describes how they built up that concert. At this many thanks to my former Canadian friend who made me acquainted with David, Tina and all the other ones.
"exaggerating"? This word doesn't even exist in this context. They're having FUN, their bodies are an extension to their instruments. If their dance bothers you, perhaps you should watch some shoegaze bands, lol.
@@PauloRocka The way the girls are moving their bodies suggests that they are having Way Too Much Fun ' This is a movie ' Not indicative of a real life performance ' The Theatricals just go hand in hand ' Plus ,this was 1980's when a lot of 'cheap shots ' were used in making movies . Today this would not go over so well ' .
@@sentry8535 At first I thought is was high energy choreography, but watching the joy coming out of the band, I could see that "da music made them do it!"
I was at one of the three nights they recorded and filmed. David Byrns energy was incredible. My body was vibrating when I left, his energy was contagious.!
Top group been with my mrs 40years and still listening to this magic music and would love to go to my grave listening to this cheers James Anthony Sanderson Welsh man
