Love how it starts with just Byrne and incomplete set that gets put together with added band members as each song transitions. Arguably the greatest concert film ever made.
What's amazing as how the movie/concert goes on his suits get bigger...seriously! An amazing performance, directed by Jonathon Demme who went on to direct ' Silence of the Lambs '
This is the song that got me into listening to Talking Heads. "Stop Making Sense" and "The Decline of Western Civilization" by Penelope Spheeris are my favorite concert films. Bands included in Decline are Black Flag, Germs, X, Alice Bag Band, the Circle Jerks, Catholic Discipline, and Fear. The Germs' performance was replicated in the 2007 Darby Crash biopic What We Do Is Secret.
I love how the movie starts and how it progresses throughout. It’s almost like David Byrne said, “Fuck it you guys, I’m starting now even though the stage isn’t ready!”
Found your channel through your Zappa reactions. Going through your back catalogue and was stoked to see you reacted to this. My favorite single project by the Talking Heads. This version of 'This Must Be the Place' in particular is magical.
SO EXCITING. hell yea. had to work late so couldn't see these as they premiered exactly, i'm like 2+ hours late -- but hell yea. i'm supposed to be working tonight, but my plans just got changed to THIS. just last night i was listening to an interview for Democracy Now with David from the last year or two, him comparing the concepts for this concert with the newer one he's doing now. you're already getting it, but in this the idea is to teach the audience everything that goes into making a concert in terms of the physical aspect -- so we start here with just David and guitar, and like you've guessed it builds and builds with every song until by the middle of the concert the whole band is finally out and jamming. whereas in the new show, American Utopia, which just last month became available on Amazon to watch, in the new show they took everything off the stage -- no amps, speakers, risers, mic stands. everyone carries all their own gear, it's all wireless. and Spike Lee directs the new one, so super-badass on all levels. i saw the American Utopia show in Dallas, TX, drove 1000 miles from florida to see it. it was amazing to see live, but Spike Lee makes you feel like you are on stage -- there are 12 musicians on stage at the max, and you feel like the 13th member, right there with them. i have to wonder at that symbology and numerology -- 13 colonies, "13" presences on stage. and of course the american founding fathers did that on purpose -- 13 colonies mirroring the 12 apostles plus 1 transcendent entity. in the Spike Lee film this is really brought home with 12 "apostles of music" telling the stories and songs, and the viewer is invisible yet still present, entirely transcendent of the physical show both in time and in space since we are viewing it later, and for some of us viewing it repeatedly, as if it is eternal, always existing digitally. maybe i don't need edibles. i've got the Byrne.
😊 I can't wait to watch this you guys! Needed to find time so I could truly enjoy the experience. 😍 Thank you! 🤣 We'll stop yelling at you now to watch this. 🍿🐰
This is the expanded band put together by the white keyboard player. I came to wonder how you could double the size of a band and it still is the Talking Heads only more so.
I loved this film and got to see it live back in the day! And I don't think they had Vans back then!! Great predictions for what is to come. I look forward to watching the rest!
The unsung heroes of this film are the sound and lighting techs and "roadies" dressed in black who literally assemble the stage pieces and instruments.
Okay I realize that you posted these a year ago, so you're probably way ahead of me if you researched Talking Heads and TomTomClub, but just in case: you have to see the original video for Genius of Love with illustrations by Brooklyn pop artist James Rizzi. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aCWCF19nUhA.html
We reacted to the entire Stop Making Sense movie. This was one of the songs performed at the live concert that we’ve never seen. Of course we know Psycho Killer☺️ who doesn’t? Feel free to check us out reacting to the rest of the songs that we don’t know.
