I remember listening to this on repeat in late 2016 and early 2017. Really difficult times, so it’s good that this song existed to soothe me. Absolutely stellar song
@@synodicseason it's more alive and major focused as opposed to the evil partying monsters in TTLO. Also, because it's about lights instead of the lack there of.
Light And Night by Tally Hall featuring Nellie McKay was released on September 8, 2009. A free download was later available as of March 31, 2010; to accompany the purchase of Kate DiCamillo’s book The Magician’s Elephant. Due to the lack of background information released about the production of this particular song, it is unclear who specifically wrote this song. We can assume that it is written by multiple Tally Hall members, featuring singers Rob Cantor and Nellie McKay. The song itself was inspired and written to match the mysterious, fantasy-rich aesthetic of the book.
So The Magician's Elephant is coming to Netflix sometime soon and boy, oh boy do I hope this song is in it because this is just TOO GOOD. Edit 26th March 2023: The movie came out and it wasn't in the movie. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. Though the movie was good to be honest
{ROB} We ought to leave a light on, leave a light on, underneath the moon Sitting in the sight of every eye I believe in you Open your window, look out and see me Slow I am coming a long way to be {NELLIE} An accidental light on Such as I am, by the lonely sun Ever is the light on, is the light on Ever meant to run Cold but I'm outside and waiting to see Blowing the snow coming closer to me {ROB & NELLIE Chorus} Tonight I'm arriving alive and alight Tonight all the black, and the gray and the white And I want to be like you are the one light I want to see your eyes looking back and into mine {NELLIE} Better when the light comes in the night-time opening the door Hoping to be right, it's open every night. So whatcha waiting for? {ROB & NELLIE} Open your window look out and see me Slow I am coming a long way to be {ROB & NELLIE Chorus} Tonight I'm arriving alive and alight Tonight all the black and the gray and the white And I want to be like you are the one light. I want to see your eyes looking back and into mine {ROB} Something is real. Maybe not. Something is gone. Something is here. Only thought. All that you want. Everything else will followwant to see your eyes looking back and into mine ROB & NELLIE Chorus} Tonight I'm arriving alive and alight Tonight all the black and the gray and the white And I want to be like you are the one light. I want to see your eyes looking back and into mine
If you actually get the notification, I think the final line of the last Rob Chorus is actually "everything else will fade away," not "everything else will follow"
Thanks for listening to Spotify no really thanks you could have listened to the radio you could have spun some vinyl you could has listened to a cassette tape you could have listened to an eight track tape if you knew what an eight track tape looked like but you chose Spotify and you still have hundreds more playlists to enjoy
nellie has been such an important musician in my life since i was a little kid, and her collaborating with tally hall is such a cool detail in both of their stories. i’m so lucky to have seen her perform in virginia a few years ago, and i’m always happy to see other fans out in the wild.
To be honest, I prefer the demo version of this song. There are lots of little things that nag at me about this version, I find the demo a lot more charming- from the slightly different key, to the lone piano as the backing, and the way some parts of the verses and choruses are sung differently. I'm glad this song was developed into a more fuller version, as most tally hall incomplete demos were not, but I think I'll stick to the previous version. I was kind of wondering if anyone felt the same way
I personally like the completed version more because it's more whimsical and magical which was the intention. The demo is more melancholy. I love both versions of the song, but this one to me is just a little better.

We ought to leave a light on Leave a light on, underneath the moon Sitting in the sight of every eye I believe in you Open your window, look out and see me Slow I am coming a long way to be An accidental light on Such as I am, by the lonely sun Ever is the light on, is the light on Ever meant to run Cold but I'm outside and waiting to see Blowing the snow coming closer to me Tonight, I'm arriving alive and alight Tonight, all the black, and the gray and the white And I want to be like you are the one light I want to see your eyes looking back and into mine Better when the light comes In the nighttime opening the door Hoping to be right, it's open every night So, whatcha waiting for? its said that if they were released together they would have been connected, maybe the bridge in turn the lights off was the part that connected the two.
This song really motivates and I feel free singing: 3 Damn! They did not value it at the time but now we love them much more uwu psdt: my best band even if they no longer make song: ¨c, come back
I swear that where the lyrics say it's "by the lonely sun" it's actually "mother's only son", and "Blowing the snow" is " (A) Glow in the snow". "(A) Glow in the snow" makes more sense, "mother's only son" doesn't, considering the singer is female, but I just cannot hear it as "by the lonely sun". (Remember "Love of the S*n"?) Keep in mind that the lyrics aren't official. Also, where could I find a download to the original mp3?
I have now listened to the Tally Hall Tribute Album's version of this song, and as they heard it, instead of "open to be right" it's probably "hoping to be right".
It's such a good song. Does anyone know of other songs they've done that have this softer feel to them? I know Ruler of Everything is kind of in that area.
This song always reminds me so heavily of Spook's Apprentice series (or Wardstone Chronicles, whatever). I'd read them outside in the dark or under the deck while it was snowing (which was VERY fun because I was on book 2 which I think was about the characters in a snowy plains). I could knock out a whole book when I was procrastination homework XD!! I wish I could read them again but getting them from the library is such a hassle. Have to get them sent from farther away libraries T-T I hope I can get a full set of them for my birthday!!! Anyway random gushing about a series made in 2006 or something over
Yooo i can't wait. I know my first encounter was an accidental misclick on Variations of a cloud after thinking it was a standard lyric video for months
I literally did not know this song existed until I heard he was gonna cover it and I've been a Tally Hall fan for like 2-3 years now. Are there any other lesser known songs I'm missing cause omg
@@orbic521 I'd say Sacred Beast is another lesser known song but to this extent i believe light and night is the only hidden song, correct me if I'm wrong tho :0
