I've owned the Tamron 100-400 4.5-6.3 Di VC USD lens for a long time now I use it all the time for wildlife photography. Find out if its worth buying and all my thoughts about using this lens.
I use this lens on the Nikon version. It was Amazing on the D500 DX sensor, it was slow and mediocre on the D850 FF, I use it now on my Z9, it is fantastic! I also own the Nikon 100-400 Z for $3000, it is heavier and about the same in sharpness. Surprisingly the focus performance between the Nikon Z and the Tamron, does NOT exist. Both are fast and spot on. I will sell the Nikon Z and use the money to buy a used older Nikon 400 f2.8 for those times where low light is a problem. I already own a 1.4 TC from Nikon giving me a 560 mm F4. Don't need anything else. Thank you Tamron! I wish they would start making Nikon Z lenses...
I’ve always been a huge tamron fan really got some of my best wildlife shots with my Tammy 100-400. I like my canon RF 100-400 that I use now but I miss the weather sealing and wider aperture sometimes. It’s to bad canon is blocking rf lens development for third parties fit the time being. Thank you for watching the channel and I appreciate your well informed comments on here they’re helpful!
Wow that's awesome to hear. I have the Z 70-200mm (Z6) and have been weighing the 2.0X TC vs this Tamron for a little more. One big bonus is that it would work on my D7100 crop sensor. I've rented the 1.4x which is excellent but hasn't been available since I looked last May lol. I think the Tamron would be sharper than the 2.0x but don't have any direct comparisons. Nice thing about the TC's is you don't have another big Lens to consider dragging along.
Great video, I'm thinking about picking this or the 150-600 G2 for my R6, so I appreciate you sharing your experience with this. I do have the RF 100-400, and it's great, but the lack of weather resistance makes me nervous. As for the f/11 primes, I have the 800, and I love it. I use it for shooting the moon, and occasionally planets(they're still VERY small), and also for small birds in situations where they're either perched or I know where they'll be(a feeder, a busy perch, etc.). The f/11 doesn't bother me because the R6 does so well at high iso.
Oh, also, I already have an EF-RF adapter and the Tamron tap-in console because I bought a used 35/1.8 and 70-200 G2, both have impressed me on the R6.
Just saw this review and I was right on the cusp of pulling the trigger on this one when I saw the 150-500 z mount and now I am hesitating. Great review though!
Thank you. I’m glad you found the review helpful. I appreciate you watching the channel! Thanks again and hope you find the lens you’re looking for. I’ve never used the 150-500 so I can’t help there.
@@PPNJ I bought this lens used from Unique Photo in Fairfield, NJ and the store "forgot" to take the 'optional' tripod collar off the lens. I paid approximately $600 for the lens in Mint - condition. I shoot Nikon F mount film and DSLRs and recently purchased the Z9 and this lens, with the FTZ II adapter is a really capable lens and far less costly than the Z mount version. IMO, TAMRON has really upped their game and many of their lenses are just as good, and some are better than the equivalent Nikkor lenses. I am angry at TAMRON of late as they've announced that by this time next year (2024) they will be out of the DSLR lens business. I recently purchased the TAMRON 15-30 G2 F2.8 used in Excellent condition for $650.00. That lens is IMO better than the Nikon 14-24 f2.8, especially since the Nikon lens does NOT have VR. I like that these TAMRON lenses will be compatible with Z bodies whereas Z lenses are not "backward" compatible.
Hey and thank you so much for subscribing I really appreciate it. Honestly I wish I would have got the 150-600G2 not that I don't love my 100-400 I do but I do always wish I had more reach and that lens looks even sharper I have few photographer friends that use it. Hope this helps a bit and thanks again for watching!
Great, honest review. Is the 100mm-400mm better than the 18-4400 Tamron? I have an older Nikon D5500 crop. I like the Nikon 200-500 but it's pricey. Do you have any other lens recommendations? Currently I have the 50mm Nikkor and the 18-140 kit lens. They are nice but heading to Zion NP and want to zoom some nice shots. Thanks!
In my opinion the 100-400 is superior in almost every way as a wildlife zoom lens. I mean yeah the 18-400 has more range but that’s about the only thing it excels at over the 100-400. I do find the 18-400 to have really good mage quality as well but the auto focus system stabilization and build quality are all better on the 100-400. Hope this helps a bit good luck at Zion!
hi I was thinking of getting an upgrade from a canon aps c body And a 70-300 is USM, to the Sony a7 III with this lens in the future. Do you think it will be good for plane spotting, like airliners and all. Should it work well with the A7iii body? Thank you for this review.
I owned the 80D before it’s a great camera. I think pairing it with this lens would work great! Good luck and thank you for watching the channel I really appreciate it! If you have any more questions always feel free to reach out anytime!
I have been using the Tamron 18 400 on my M50 and thats exactly the problem i am facing. AF stops working and now it has worsened to the point its unsuable. That prevents me from getting this lens. Does the Sigma counterpart encounter the same issue? Any ideas on that mate. much appreciated.
Waiting on FedEx today. Chose it over the RF 1-4 because it can go on the R & R5 and also be a 160-640 on the M6ii or speedboost it and gain a stop. I'll see how it goes. Right now BstBy doing 24 month no interest
Some of my best shots were taken on the tamron 100-400 it’s a great lens. I sold my copy for the RF 100-400 now because I’m fully using RF mount bodies now but sounds like you made a good decision! Good luck any questions feel free to ask I’ll help if I can and thank you for watching the channel I really appreciate it!
I will be using it on an Canon EOS 200D. Would I experience the autofocus issues with that camera body. I would like to purchase this one but your comments have made me a little. It is hard enough trying to capture moving objects at the best of time, but I am nervous that this could be an issue with my Camera. Great Review ........... Thank You Gary
Hello Gary, I don't think you will have a problem with the Tamron lens. Your camera is an EF mount so it will be a native fit for the lens. I usually used this lens adapted to mirrorless cameras when I owned it. Because you'll be using it natively would expect some of the little issues I would have wouldn't affect you as much if at all. Tamron makes really great glass and the AF and IS work really well. Like I say in the video is it top of the line? Well no but for the price i think it will be hard to beat. Good luck with your decision and if you have any other questions always feel free to reach out and ask me anything. Thank you for watching my channel I really appreciate it!
I have the same setup, eos rp and the tamron 100-400. And the same problem happens from time to time. The autofocus stops working. For me turning off and on the camera works. Quick to fix but very annoying. Otherwise it's very nice! 👍
Right that’s exactly what happens to me. Sometimes I want to get the RF 100-400 but no weather sealing and f/8 kind of keeps me holding on to the tamron since it really is a good lens for the money. Thanks for watching the video I appreciate it!
Just got the Tamron 100-400 today so haven't had this issue yet but I expect I will since this same thing happens from time to time with the Tamron 70-210. Just a red flashing autofocus box that does nothing. Usually I power off but I wonder if a quick disconnect of the lens on and off is quicker...
Stefan I've just got this lens today and mounted on my RP. It has a serious focus speed issue. At 100mm it will scan from close to infinity and lock really quickly at any aperture, however as soon as i zoom in the focus motor completely slows down. At 400mm it takes several seconds to do a full sweep from close to infinity. Have you noticed any issues like this?
I’m contemplating getting this lens for my Canon M50 but I’m worried that since I’ll be adapting it, it will have some focus issues. What do you think?
Hi. I am experiencing unsharp images with this lense, when shooting at 400 mm, handheld. First i thought it was birds in flight only, but yesterday i had birds sitting, shooting at 1/3200, trying both AF-C and AF-S. The problems seems to be an issue when the subject is +10 meters away. My camera is a Nikon D500, I am using manual settings with auto ISO. I am using the widest aperature possible, which is 6.3 when on 400 mm.
Well it is possible you need to have the lens calibrated since it sounds like you’re using it with a DSLR camera. (Mirrorless cameras like the R6 don’t require calibration because the focusing takes place completely with the sensor) Another thing you could try is not shooting wide open but maybe trying like F/8 that should provide additional sharpness and a larger depth of field for focusing. Good luck I hope you get the issue sorted out and thank you for watching the video. I appreciate it.
@@PPNJ Thanks for your good advice. I changed to F/8 and that really helped, but i am not quite there yet. Tried on a tripod and I am still getting unsharp images. I will do a calibration one of these days and then return the lense if that does not help
I can’t say for sure never shot with Nikon. I can say it being the native mount it will most likely perform perfectly. I’ve also had a lot of people on the channel say they use this lens on Nikon with no problems. I never had these issues until I started using it on the canon mirrorless R cameras. I think it’s more an issue on this specific mount.
How To Setup Dual Back Button Auto Focus On The Canon R6 | Wildlife Settings & Custom buttons ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jcRX5mwM59I.html
That’s how I setup my AF for wildlife save that into your C1 settings. F/8 will give you sharper results then wide open at f/6.3 I usually shoot with auto iso and then whatever shutter speed needed depending on the movement of the subject. I have a video talking about general wildlife shooting principals on the channel as well.
No I haven't noticed it being any less sharp at the long end then through the rest of the focal length. I'd say almost 95% of my shots are at 400mm I do sharpen most of my images in post a bit though. Are you experiencing softness at the long end?
Тamron kenses are optimised for Nikon cameras - for Canon you should have got the Sigma lens !!! I bet you have mentioned in your mind the complete opposite ways of how the focus and distance ring work ot the Tamron lens in compare with you native Canona lens - and the Sigma works just like the Canon... you must read more before publishing such videos !!!
Hey, I’m not really sure I’ve never had a chance to try that lens sorry I can’t be of more help. Thank you for watching the channel though I appreciate it.
