I'm sure I'm speaking for quite a few people here but I wanted to give you guys a very sincere thanks for doing what you do. I owe most of my technological knowledge and understanding of guitar pedals and amps to your show. There aren't many sources I can go to that have me excited to learn so again, thanks to the entire TPS crew, you guys rock 🤘

@Johan Carlson We could start a TPS Co-op. Maybe incorporate something like Kickstarter and/or GoFundMe. A quasi-Socialist arrangement just for TPS folks, where we buy/trade/share etc. Probably unworkable (and pedal companies might be unimpressed) but the aging Lefty in me can dream...

It shouldn't shock ANYONE how much fidelity a tape delay can have, as, for years, the music we grew up loving was recorded, mixed and mastered on tape. If the fundamental characteristics of tape were wow, flutter and loss of frequency response, all our favourite songs up until the 90's would sound like they were being run through a flanger, vibrato, and an old Supro tube amp!

Great show, as always! Nothing beats the magic of real tape for me. 5 years ago I bought a 70s tape machine: Vorg (by Pearl) Echo Orbit 1. I have been gigging with it every week since then. Never had any issue. The maintenance is minimal: every year I cut a new made-to-measure tape, clean the heads and put a new drive belt in the engine. No digital emulation ever brought the same smile to my face as this thing. It is not only the EQ or the modulation that make the difference. It’s an indefinable physical experience.

Shane at Echo Fix is a top bloke. He is the only source I have found for Roland parts and tapes that actually work. He really helped me out with parts and advice when I was fixing a couple of Roland Space Echo's for a client. Great to see that now he even has his own tape delay unit.

One of the great features of the Strymon Volante is the “tape wear” knob. All the way to the left you get the full fidelity of the tape, and the more you turn to the right the less fidelity and darker the repeats become. Then you can add modulation with the “mechanics” knob. Its doesn’t have the exact character of a good analog delay, but it gets that sound pretty darn well.

I love what you guys do, and I adore delay/echo myself as well. Over forty years ago, I was given (yes given!!!) a WEM Copicat Custom dated about 1965- '66ish, it is all valve, and has the most amazing sound. It is still working to this day. It is rather fragile, the case is falling apart, but it's hanging in there. I know it is not on the level of your units, but it has a unique sound all of it's own. I have learned a lot from you two about all kinds of effects and set ups over the years. I know you will, but please keep doing what you do, because we really love what you do...

Finally a old school That Pedal Show in the room with gear and no guest appearances. :) I like what you said about expectation of Tap Echo. I recently got a Giga Delay from Boss, which has a Space Echo (No Reverb) emulation. I was super disappointed because it sounded so clean. I was fully wanting the aged tape effect from the emulation. I had to come to terms with that fact that a "perfect" emulation of tape delay from a Space Echo would be "perfect" with new tape and without the sounds caused by poor maintenance. I also realized that the digital delay sound is actually what they were going for when Tape delay was designed. Perfect repeats. It just wasn't possible at the time and we came to love the "imperfect" sound. Seems to happen a lot with musicians and gear. Fortunately that pedal has a modulated delay, which accomplishes closer to the same thing, so I was still happy. That's a fantastic delay btw. I'm surprised it's never made it onto the show. Also, would people stop complaining about how the Carbon Copy is dark? That's it's sound, and it's a great sound. If this had been made in the 80's by some company in Japan, people would be drooling over it.

Yet again, some lovely chordage from Dan.A Fab episode. I used a Space Echo extensively in a studio years ago and loved it. Also, as others have commented, that tone with Mick using the Rattler with the D &M drive-oh my word,. Even after a late night gigging this .Inspired me to set up my live rig in the living room and mess around all afternoon-much to the disgust of the cat.. I have a different array of pedals and went off on my own tangent but ended up changing the order of a couple of drive pedals whilst playing with my delay. As you have said before, it is all about being inspired by your gear. Cheers yet again guys.

Just wanted to mention how great the core tone was for this episode. I can't think of a more quintessentially Dan & Mick amp combo than the Two Rock and Dan's new Matchless. It's like a "boutique upgrade" version of the Super Reverb and AC30 setup you guys used to use all the time back in the old Pedal Shed. Bonus: Let me make my regular plea for more Hiwatt. 😁

(VCQ-ish) For all those times someone says, "But this stuff is so expensive! Please feature cheaper stuff!" (Came up on the visit to Jam Pedals video lately...). I just watched Josh Scott's "$50 Pedals That Don't Suck" and he got a complaint in the comments to the effect of, "Not everyone wants cheap stuff - could you please feature some more aspirational gear." (I paraphrase.) To which someone replied: "There's a channel for that: it's called That Pedal Show." So there you go: there's just no pleasing everyone, all the time. One would be a fool to try. So, thanks again for what YOU do! 👍

But the RE-201 looks soo much sexier! (I got one too, with a DC-50 sitting on top) I met Mick, Dan and Rabea along with that Yoshi guy, randomly at a guitar store in Tokyo (Ishibashi, Ochanomizu) last year! It just so happened to be Dan's birthday but I didn't know at that time. (Happy belated b-day Dan.) I used to be more of a Mick fan, but after meeting them Dan was just such a down to earth effects nerd that I'm more of a fan of him now (super genuine nice guy, actually Rabea too, Mick was being like a crazy kid running around the store picking up a metal zone and saying "this is what you've been looking for"). They were looking for a Boss DSD2, which they eventually found at a Hard Off Shop (Crazy name, but the online store is called Hard On...line). Anyways I hope I meet them again someday. (I was surprised to be soo starstruck meeting them. I asked the Japanese people working at the store if they knew them. They said "of course" I couldn't tell cos they weren't freaking out like me.)

I had lost track of time and didn't realize until I saw this on front page that it's friday! People might be tired with the old delay units at this point... But whenever I see words like Echoplex, Echorec or similar mentioned, I can't keep my pants on. That's how excited I get before even seeing the episode. To think I used to only have reverb from amp and now I have Carbon Copy always on and get excited by just seeing the word echo.

I had the chance to use an Echo Fix in a studio here in Aus a few months back and it was the first time I ‘got’ tape delays. I’d always just assumed it was like an analog delay, but the interactivity between myself, the amp, the guitar and the whole circuit made it feel like the tape delay was it’s own instrument. Maybe it’s just my brain tricking me because these units are physically big, but I’m finding the more I get the chance to use old school style gear like these and Leslies and all the rest of it, how the irreplaceable imperfections and chaos of them inspires the playing!

I remember the 1980s and how much better the Space Echos (My favorite) and the Echoplexes sounded versus my Boss DM-2. Yes there is magic in the tape, but I am very happy with my standard version Belle Epoch. It gets me 90% there, and it always works.

Humiliating (for me) compliment for you guys... been playing for 30+ years but because I was never a delay user (except in post... recording), I truly never grasped the differences in types until this video... it was like Simon's explaining harmonics. So, please, never refrain from the simple things. I consider myself fairly adept at these things, but because this was a specific area not in my orbit, I was in need of this video because I wanted to get better at this. Most info out there is either childish or you need a degree in aerospace engineering to grasp. I wish the know-it-alls could remember when they didn't know-it-all and appreciate that some of us like learning. Inspiring playing too... thanks gents.

Cheers chaps lovely sounding stuff all round. There does seem to be more going on with the RE-201, but then apart from the tape the preamp, compander, reverb circuitry and output are all electronics 'of a certain age' doing their thing which adds up I guess, that red light seemed to be on quite a bit as well. Nice reminder of how good the carbon copy sounds with some bright/mid heavy drive too. Hit that long blue note......and let it float. :)

If you don’t want to use an expression pedal for the belle epoch deluxe but still want to always run through the preamp, you can. Flip the switch inside the pedal for trails mode. The pedal is no longer true bypass and instead cuts the signal off at the record head. So you get spill over, no new repeats, and your dry signal still runs through the preamp.

Unrelated to Tape Echo but I had to share: recently, I bought a Nash S-57 and fell in love with it. Something about it’s sound and sanded neck gives me the chills. The strings, however, were a little smaller than my Casino’s flatwound 10s making the transition uncomfortable. When I went out to buy some new strings, I was struck with an even better idea- I would order a set of Mick’s strings (along with stickers and magnets; my first TPS order)! Well, they came in yesterday (after a week in the mail to the US) and were installed last night. I’m loving them. The size and feel of them is fantastic so instead of one, I may have to go back and buy them in bulk as to have them my regular strings. Perhaps, if I ever get a Tele, I’ll try Dan’s out of morbid curiosity but if anyone is curious about Mick’s set- they are utterly fantastic.

Hey guys, love your show and I appreciate the time, experience and knowledge which goes into each episode. I would love to hear you have the Roland RE-201 up against a Roland RE-301 which distinguished itself by adding two new features. The first was a lush, analog chorus effect that was able to be used concurrently or independently from the delay effect to give a pseudo-stereo output option A and B where: A=Direct+Reverb+Chorus B=Echo+Chorus+Sound On Sound. Running the RE-301 with 2 amps is something you need to hear. Additionally, the RE-301 added a new “Sound on Sound” mode, allowing users to loop phrases and then record additional layers on top. This radical concept at the time contributed to the development of “looping”, a phenomenon that would become huge years later

You need to check out Nocturne pedals. For about 10 years this one man shop has been obsessively going after the Space Echo in pedal form. His Dyna and Mystery Brain perfect the preamp part... an essential part of the Space Echo and a beautiful thing on its own. About a year ago he released the Mystery Brain which adds the delay side. Absolutely brilliant. Many of his oldest fans are going after the Gretsch/Brian Setzer thing, but his pedals have much wider application.

100% agree with Dan’s comment about getting your hands on gear and properly trying it for yourself. It’s one thing to know your favourite artist uses such and such gear and know what it sounds like on a record. It’s another to have tried it in a shop with those store assistants with amazing chops (you know who I’m talking about!) and sales expectations hovering around and the random Saturday morning audience listening and putting you off. It’s another thing trying stuff with no pressure, exploring it and finding if it’s for you. Very important is trying with your existing kit, guitar, amps etc...Most don’t get the chance to try “holy grail” stuff and can only read about it and have to vicariously work out what’s for them by other means. (I have bought stuff solely on the basis of TPS episodes!) But if you can get your hands on the good stuff you can find out if it works for you or not, Happy days. I know I’ve tried plenty of “highly rated” kit that did not work for me and have tried cheap and accessible stuff that worked for me despite other’s opinions. The only way to work out if it’s good for you is try it in an unpressured situation. I have plenty of Saturday Morning Purchases that sit shiny in a box. Also there’s lots of psychology here. Why do I fret over what others think of my gear choice if it works for me? Is fear of disapproval another unacknowledged “sense” that we taste pedals with......? In the middle of the gig often the only person that knows is you. But that still counts more than we realise! Some of the kit that works for me wouldn’t even interest Poohead!

This episode Dan & Mick take two benedryl and still attempt to do the show! J/K Love you guys, Great Episode!!! God that Rattler is gonna break me of my pedal apathy. I've got so many pedals over the last few years I had actually burned out and started a new money pit habit, eurorack modular synth. But man I need a Rattler!!!!!

I love my old Danecho & Obscura delays. Both great sounding digital delays, in my opinion.

Well, obviously the description of this show should have been size matters....lol. Some absolutely great tones our these effects - always love the comparison of analogue to digital. Love watching the mechanics of the echo tape - mesmerizing. Thanks guys - great comparison and review.

Airwolf: Knight rider in a helicopter. Exactly how I described it to my kids the other day. Loved both of those shows as a kid. My brother tried to make his hair look like the pilot in that show 😒. Mick and I are about the same age so makes sense we both liked those shows.

Did I miss the new studio back wall layout? Looks amazing! Loving the wood on the back wall...much warmer, almost tube amp like ;). Keep up the great work, D&M!

Great show as ever. Out of interest when you have two delay styles on your board, the Epoch and ADRX20 for instance, do you use them for different duties/songs or are they always working together?

nice work. the re-201 is like a leather shoe that has been worn in a little. it fits in ways that a new shoe or rubber shoe doesnt. I wish the flashback was 2 or 3 delays (at the same time) and a looper.
@yourendwastheroad
@yourendwastheroad 5 лет назад
You can maybe get close with the TC triple delay and use the 2290 delay as an approximate 8 second (iirc) looper.

Would love to try the real deal. Maybe someday... I’ve been using the Strymon Volante and Fairfield Circuitry Meet Maude for my delays. I can’t have a board without tape (emulation) and analog. Love them both too much...

The theme from Airwolf! "It's just like that but with different notes" Bwahahaha!!!!! 😆 I gotta bank that line away to use on the next available victim.

I agree with former viewer. Thank you both for doing this great show, the learning for players increases with every show. Dan mentioned on other video about him going to a Steve Vai show. Dan please talk to Steve about appearing on TPS and get Joe Satriani´s, Marty Friedman´s and Vinnie Moore´s emails. It would be great to have all these Guitar Masters appearing in TPS. Keep rocking and prosper.

Man it's good to see that 200k have subscribed, I'm so happy for you guys. Another great episode. The RE-201 sounds so luscious, nothing stacks up against it really. After watching TPS and chatting to Mick I brought the Belle Epoch Deluxe and it is good, but man does it dampen down the high end sparkle. The merch is all good, but TPS pedals seem to get snapped up pretty quick! Let's have a TPS Fuzz (TFP)!!!

This episode was so good, I have no clue what anything was as I just got so lost in the echos. Everything just sounded great, one of those things it’s just as easy and great to get lost listening to as it is to play. Got to wondering what the honk would be like through the wall of echo early on... likely still be honking...

The replicator vs the big boys would be intriguing. Also there are Univox (other Japanese) versions, would be cool to see them compared.

I had a Replicator Jr (which is supposed to be cleaner and brighter than the original) and it had as much fidelity as a bucket brigade delay and the warble was worse than my BED with the modulation maxed out. Very disappointing, I sent it back.
