Hi Catherine, thank you for the tutorial:) What would be the purpose of using these extended stitches? Is it just for aesthetic? I also noticed that you don’t ‘yarn under’ on your colour changes, is there a reason for that? Or is it just your preference? Thanks so much!

Hi Courtney, thanks for your comment and watching the tutorial! Yes, the choice of which stitch (e.g. dc, exdc, htr, tr...) you use for a tapestry crochet project is definitely partly an aesthtic one but it also has to do with the thickness or stiffness/drape of the resulting "fabric" that you'd like. Smaller stitches like dc tend to result in a thicker and slightly stiffer fabric compared to taller stitches like htr and tr. I've used stitches ranging from dc up to tr for tapestry crochet and they all give a different result and it depends on what drape and thickness I'd like which one I choose for a particular project. They also show the tapestry crochet pattern slightly differently (and this varies depending on whether you're working in rows or rounds!), so that is another factor to take into consideration. The yarn under point is a good one too - generally I think it comes down to personal preference for a particular stitch/project and the final "look" you want. I have a couple of patterns coming up soon which use this exdc stitch actually. Hope that all helps!
