This is exactly why, as a Christian and African American woman, I work in the mental health field and study in this field. My family struggles with mental illness and can't acknowledge it due to a many of reasons. I've struggled with mental health...we all do. It breaks my heart that the African American community lacks support and culturally competent and compassionate people in this field to meet their needs. Mental and emotional health is a need and I take a stand towards helping people with this struggle. It's my calling and purpose and I thank GOD for blessing me to help my community and so many others, break those barriers, knock down those walls and receive the healing they deserve. Thank you Taraji for taking a stand also! Many blessings and much healing all! #mentalhealth #blackmentalhealth

WE don't seek help? Yes we do! ..I'm not saying it isn't ok to seek outside help..but to make this a black problem? Nope! we are a FAMILY oriented people who talk to our AUNTIES, FRIENDS UNCLES, BIG COUSINS Ect. Black folk have been through heLL..and still in this hellous country !..but what We are not..is THE posterpeople of the mentally ill..I know they hope they pushed us to it..but sorry...we are stronger than that ! The problem isn't BLACKS ..it's the terror our children are suffering from RACIST ! Don't TALK around it..talk ABOUT it!!! .We operated as a village of people who looked out for one and the other! ....But we were sabatoged!( we all know the stories) . However, we STILL..talk to our FAMILY about OUR Problems ! not a stranger charging 100 PLUS an hour....one is free and none stigmatizing ..the other is ...This is just another ATTEMPT to brand black folk with ISSUES OTHERS have.! the mentally UNSTABLE label that is obviously due for all these white folk who continue shooting up schools , offices, killing innocent people in grocery stores, running people over, shooting folk in the sanctity of their churches, killing groups of people at concerts and parks, who are all ...just MINDING THEIR OWN BUSINESS!.....but WE are the mentally ill?!..No our issues are simply the symptoms of fighting for and or living in, a nation FULL OF HATEFUL PEOPLE WHO HAVE DESTROYED OUR PEOPLE AND CONSTANTLY SEEK TO DO US THE SAME DAY AND NIGHT SEEKING WHOM HE ..OR SHE MAY DESTROY!!

I agree 100%. These kids are facing too much today. Mental health issues do not discriminate. All families face these issues at one time or another. I think she did a good job in presenting the issues she has faced. Unfortunately we have some very sick kids that need institutional hospitals in order to address their problems. We shut all of these hospitals down. Parents have nowhere to turn when they know their child needs hospitalization and constant monitoring. This is a big issue for adults and children in todays society.

My city faces this problem. The government closed one hospital institution that provided services to profoundly disabled people (mental retardation) and minimize the other institution that served people with mental illness. The youths have no where to go and outpatient services are not enough for some of the youths, especially when their home are dysfunctional.

my comment was very calm and fact-based. I stated that taraji is a biological woman, not a transwoman. I also asked why it would be a problem if she was trans, which you failed to answer. Nothing I said was ignorant, but your comments are, and they're also filled with anger. I pray you find peace and I pray you have some type of positive impact on the community you claim to care about. Also, I don't have any "idols." These people are just humans who are using their status to try and bring some positive change, which I think is great. Jaden smith just built a water filtrating and filling centre in Flint. Robert Smith paid off $5 million worth of student debt. Beyoncé donated $2 million worth of scholarships to HBCU students and helped pay for homes and repairs after the Texas hurricane. Jay Z has bailed out several black men and paid for their legal teams. Robert Downey JR has started a nanotech company to help clean up the environment and tackle waste. Ellen degeneres has paid for several people's homes and school tuitions. Rihanna has a specialist centre for cancer in Barbados. The list goes on and on. There are people in the world capable of doing good, who continue to make positive changes for those less fortunate.

Thank you Taraji for speaking up about this critical issue! Too many people in the Black community downright refuse to acknowledge that mental health is even a real issue or they believe the devil has a hold on someone and that's why they're "crazy" or always have "problems". Please keep speaking about this issue, NEVER stop! We are with you all the way. I too have suffered greatly from the same health issues that you have and I have faced real stigma because of it. I no longer discuss it with anyone, I keep it to myself as I was informed that's the best way to handle it, by some of my own family mind you, and to pray on things. I'm fine now, but I think that message I was given is 100% wrong! We need to be open and honest, it needs to be allowed. Black people need to have more empathy and caring for each other when it comes to mental health issues.

These differences play a role in your overall mental health and the way you perceive and cope with the world and life. She's not saying that only black people have issues. She's saying that it's easier for a black mental health professional to help a black mental health patient because they are more likely to understand the cultural aspects of their life and are able to relate to the patient on topics that others would not. It only makes sense to have someone helping you who is able to better understand you. This is the same for all races and ethnicities. It's easier to understand where you come from if i come from that same place. Yall took this and turned it into something that it never was in the first place 🤦🏾‍♂️

I live in a decent area, yet i noticed when I was in highschool the special ed class was all black low income kids. They weren't disabled, then needed support and mentoring.

I'm a young WOC, I've made my life about the pursuit of psychology and mental health. I've been contemplating pursuing a doctorate in psychology but been fearful of taking that route due to the costs of education. I want to use the fact that I am a WOC as an aid in treating and working with people of color in the field of psychology. Honestly watching this continues to fuel my desire. I may be in debt till long after I exist on this planet but this reassures me that nothing I do will be in vain. Thank you Taraji.

Taraji is Phenomenal woman.see we don’t know who is going through things mentally in life people think because she is a celebrity that she doesn’t have any emotional breakdown . She’s human and has feelings Mentally and emotionally. I am so proud of her for speaking out about Mental Health for All of Us ..Mental illness is a hard subject to speak about ,it’s needed to be heard because people think it’s not important.its reality and it’s very important. So many people suffer from Mental illness. That we don’t know, it starts when you’re a young individual when you go through things that’s not good and it instills in your mind and in your soul for very long time. This world is not a easy world to live in We all go through emotional distress for different reasons. I am so happy she spoke out for us as African-American individuals because Of who we are being color, we get the most suffocation in life. We must help Taraji P continue to fight the cause for Mental Stigma Mental Health 👊🏽what we believe in ourselves and others in our community.I truly salute to Taraji P Henderson..🙌🏽👑👑👑👑👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💖💖💖💖💖

Powerful. Yes, in the Black community, we have been taught to pray our problems away. However, I do believe prayer is a powerful too, but can also understand that folks will need more professional help at times.

It should be a requirement to talk to a therapist at least once a month. It should be cheap and easy. Your age or income shouldn't matter.

Thank you Tariji for your honesty and putting yourself in the cause. I have seen so much bullying of our young kids and it too hurts my heart that these babies have thoughts of ending their lives. We need more like you to speak and do what is necessary to save our kids.

Thank you Taraji, for your courage to share your own story, but most of all your love and compassion to want to see change in the area of mental health particularly in black and poor communities. Everyone is affected by mental illness in some way. I applaud you for caring!
