Tarantula Husbandry: Mixing Substrate for Moisture Dependent Species

Just a heads up; this video actually does NOT feature any tarantulas. I'm currently writing an article for my blog on how to set up an enclosure for a moisture dependent species, and I thought it might be easier to shoot a video that showed some of my process. I was going to add the rehousing of my T. stirmi on the end, but this was already pushing 10 minutes, and I figured it might be a bit too much to sit through for folks who just wanted to see the T (I'll be posting that one later).
One thing I want to make very clear is that this is MY way of mixing substrate for these guys. There are certainly other ways to do it, and many folks use peat, topsoil, or coco fiber alone with great success. I've just found it quite fun to work with the various substrates to find mixtures that fit my needs.
Many thanks to my son, Roane, who did a great job filming this for me (and barely sniffed!).

+RaginMoose100 Thanks so much! I used coco fiber for years, but began experimenting with other substrates when I started keeping tarantulas that required moisture. We even ran a bit of an experiment where we mixed different substrates, added water, then recorded how quickly the water evaporated. Coco absorbs water well, but it seems to dry out quickly. Part of the fun of the hobby for me has been experimenting with the substrates to get the properties I want. Thanks again!

Hi, Ethan! Some people love using drainage layers, but I have only used them a couple of times. If you mix in vermiculite, you should be fine. Try putting a layer of vermiculite at the bottom of the cage (1/2" thick or so).

+reptileboy91 Thanks so much! I've waited to post this one because it doesn't feature any Ts. I'm working on an article on keeping moisture-dependent tarantulas, and I shot it mainly for that. What species of Avic? I really don't worry about the humidity with my Avics at all. For years, folks were keeping them moist and many were dying (hence SADS or "Sudden Avic Death Syndrome"). It's now believed that good ventilation is much more important than humidity. I keep mine dry with a large water dish. The ventilation is in the sides, not the top. Every once in a while, I'll pour some water in and moisten a corner (usually in the winter when it gets dry), but I don't keep it moist. Hope that's helpful!

Hi Tom! I know this is an old video but it helps me but I hope you see this because I have a question. Here in sweden I dont know what top soil is exactly, but almost any soil I find has fertilizer. So I was wondering, what can I use instead of top soil? I have coco fiber and I can get peat and vermiculite, could I mix those 3 and get same or almost same result? Also, can I use soil from the woods? They have all kinds of bugs and insects living in it so what why would it not work? Some people say its not good. And when you say peat do you mean peatmoss or only peat? Sorry it was more than one question, but I really need help with this. Also im a huge fan and I subscribe to your chanel and I listen to your podcast on spotify, thank your for teaching us, much love from Sweden!
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders Год назад
Hello, Varbeges! Yes, you absolutely can. I just mixed up batch of that myself. By peat I mean the compacted peat - here, it comes in large, tightly packed bales and is quite dusty. I usually like to buy the coco fiber in compressed bricks, then I hydrate them by adding water in a large plastic bin. As the coco is quite damp after hydration, I will then add in the dry peat and vermiculite and mix it up. A lot of folks in Europe will use dirt from outside. We generally don't in the US in fear of pesticides and such. As for proportions, you can go 45/45/10 with coco fiber, peat, and vermiculite. Or, experiment with the proportions that work for you! I hope that helps, and thanks for listening and watching! - Tom
@varbergessamo6045
@varbergessamo6045 Год назад
@@TomsBigSpiders Alright thank you so much that helped me alot! I figured there is some Europe/US differences, because here big parts of the woods are nature reserve im not sure if thats accurate translation, so there shouldnt be any pesticide or anything bad for nature, sure there is maybe things i still wouldnt want in my enclosure but i could bake it or boil it before use. And that was a great idea that i can wet down the coco fiber first and then mix in dry peat so it can absorb water from the coco fiber, thank you for your time i really appreciate it, i know you get alot of questions everyday so thank you my friend!

Do you find that mites are an issue with any of this store bought stuff since most of this is intended to be used in a garden and not for a living creature, my concern is that not a lot of care is taken on the packaging/manufacturing end to ensure that its pest free should it be used as a substrate for a living creature as it is in this case?

Hi, John. I've used sand in mixtures before, including my currently one. I like what it adds to the consistency, but I HAVE had enclosures with sand in them get mold before. For whatever reason, the Eco Earth/coco fiber just seems prone to that yellowish fungus.

Thanks for the reply. I love my T's but I am getting so frustrated with trying to find a suitable substrate for them. Top soil is just to heavy do to the high sand content. Peat seems to be nothing more than sticks, stems, chunks of wood and dust. I have hayfever with allergies to dust and pollen. It seems that there is major amounts of dust in all subjects/mixes. Even the two of you are having a hard time with the dust just making this video. I just don't know what to do. I don't want to give up my T's but I'm running out of options.

Can you do a video on substrates for the different species? I live in SW FL where your bread gets mold on it after 3 days. I’m going crazy! I keep mostly Brachy sp so it’s not even much water we use. I overfill the water dish once a week so there’s a damp corner and I STILL get mold. Ive now started baking my coco fiber because I’m hoping if there’s any mold spores in it they will be killed. I do have a C. Lividum and cage maintenance is an absolute nightmare, the spider is fantastic and lets me do what I have to do but every 2 weeks or so I’m plucking out a piece of mold growth. I used the substrate that came with my spider from Jamie’s and that molded in 2 days😩 I don’t know her mixture but I’m sure it’s just where I live and nothing to do with her product. I also use critter creepers and ADD side vents so there’s more air flow. Any help is appreciated! I’m at my wits end with mold! I can’t use any moss except fluffy reindeer moss and I’ve never seen a keeper use it so that worries me. Help!

Hello, Joelle! I sure could! I've experimented with many types, and I always had the most mold issues with cocofiber. That stuff seems to just attract the stuff. Is the mold yellowish?
@joellemegan2934
@joellemegan2934 4 года назад
No it starts white and then goes to green. I have seen some yellow. So when I use anything BUT coco fiber (completely dry coco that I bake) I get mold on 3 or so days. I tried Jamie’s mix and had mold in 2 days. So now I do totally dry coco that I bake first, then they only get a water dish. My small little slings get sprayed walls now. I don’t want to lose them to dehydration. They’re 1/8th slings. Chalcodes and Hentzi. My other 2 itty bitty slings have finally grown into 1/2in almost 1in so I’m not as worried about them & moisture. My Hentzi keeps burrowing to the moist and 3x I’ve had to destroy his home due to mold. I’m only using 3mls of water maybe once a week (when it dries up) I’ve now rehoused him into a bigger enclosure with more air flow so I hope that works. He was in a 2oz deli per his size and now he’s in a 4oz with tons of vents. I’m just at a loss with these mold issues. It’s trial and error just about every few days.

Great question! Well, if the substrate is too fluffy and not packed down, the spider will either walk on its tip toes or avoid walking on it completely. If it's too dry, the spider will hover over the water dish. If it's too damp, it won't walk on it or it will hang on the sides of the enclosure.

@@TomsBigSpiders I need to go to a garden store/center instead with a larger selection. I usually only use peat (not soil). What is the difference between "organic fertilizer" and manure? Happened to order Sphagnum moss that contains organic fertilizer, the package looks very similar to yours. (B07GX53JZCI on Amazon) would not have done it if I had read all the information. English is not my native language. I rely on Google translate and more or less self-taught English from tv, movies RU-vid channels like your's.

Do you think this would be a good mixture for a b.albopilosum? She's a little over a year old and I live in Colorado, the climate is extremely dry here. I have a mix of cocofiber and spagnum moss in her enclosure now.
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 7 лет назад
Hi, Ashley! What are you currently keeping her in? Does she have a water dish? You could definitely use this mixture, but this isn't a species I worry to much about moisture with. They are VERY hardy and do well in dry enclosures. If you're worried that it might be a bit too dry for her, you could always moisten down a corner of your cocofiber and sphagnum moss mix. That would work well, too!

Okay, thank you! Sorry I'm always asking you a million questions on here lol. I just wanna make sure I'm taking the best care possible! She's my first T and I had gone to a reptile expo with the intention of bringing home a snake, but came back with a T so I wasn't as prepared as I would've like to have been lol! I currently have her in a critter keeper, but she just molted again last night and I'm pretty sure she has now outgrown it, so I was going to buy one of those breeding boxes you made a video of, instead of going with a bigger critter keeper. Right now she has a milk cap as a water dish, but I'm pretty sure she has outgrown that as well. I was probably going to pick up those deli cups you linked me to on one of your other videos. I'm waiting for her to come out of her hide so I can see how big she is now so I can better gauge her needs, but I'm also 99% sure she out grew her hide as well. And she just molted in September! I was surprised she molted again so quickly!
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 7 лет назад
Please, no apologies ever needed! Whenever you have a question, feel free to ask. :) She molted already for you? That's fantastic! I currently have my 4" female in one of those breeding boxes; they work great for this species. Mine stopped using her hide after her most recent molt. If she's 3" or so, you can definitely switch the dish to one of those small jello shot cups.

I've never measured her, not really sure how, but I got her back in May. She turned 1yr old in August and molted in September and again last night. She got pretty big after her first molt so I am excited to see how big she is now. I will definitely change her water dish then! She was about the size of a nivea lip balm tin when I got her. I've never handled her so I'm not sure what to compare her last molt size to, cause I accidentally pulled it out in pieces :/

I just realized that you were probably asking about substrate. I've used both topsoil with vermiculite and coco fiber with mine. The coco is a bit fluffy, but they reinforce their burrows with webbing.

I avoid all miracle grow products as they contain fertilizers that can be harmful to the spiders. I would use regular topsoil or organic potting soil.

@TomsBigSpiders 5 лет назад
Hello! What brand soil did you use? I've had less trouble with molding with topsoil than I have with coco fiber. I generally only use two brands though. Is it white mold or that yellow fungus?
@peterleback6662
@peterleback6662 5 лет назад
It’s white mold, and I believe it’s earthgro but I would have to check when I get back home to Vegas on Thursday. I know it was all organic with no chemicals. I didn’t use the vermiculite, I just mixed the peat moss and topsoil, mainly because the only bag of vermiculite they had was $20 and enormous.

what mixture do you suggest for A. chalcodes????
@TomsBigSpiders

I would use a mixture of peat, topsoil, and or coco fiber (any of those three would work great) with some vermiculite. Some A. chalcodes appreciate some moist substrate.

@@TomsBigSpiders incorrect they like it very dry
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 4 года назад
@@papadisconnect Papa Disconnect, that's not always the case. I have one that if given moist substrate, will burrow right into it. I've spoken to folks who have this species locally, and they get rain just like everywhere else. And, in the more arid regions, they will burrow to reach moisture. As I said, SOME like a bit of moisture...it depends on the specimen.
@joellemegan2934

My A. Chalcodes ALWAYS burrows to the moist substrate. Especially while in premolt. She hangs around up top on the dry as well but I often find her digging into her moist sub. I was keeping her totally dry when I bought her and she was not doing well. Just sat in the corner, not eating, not burrowing (she’s a sling) As soon as I watched one of Toms Vids about husbandry I’ve never gone back. Btw, she dug right in! Literally as soon as I changed her sub. Now she’s thriving. 2x molts, eating like a pig. Very pleased with all the great info you give! Always with a gracious attitude as well😊
