As a supervisor I find this coaching strategy very empowering for the employee. More supervisors need to harness a person's positive abilities rather than pounding them at what they are not good at. Being a supervisor means being a leader. An leaders never act like they are better than their subordinates. Rather, leaders are to lead people through example and empower them to find their own capabilities.

Having a whole situation be vauge and half solving issues is not being an adult Working through issues with an employee wholeheartedly and in a manner that helps put their mind to rest too is not childish, it's being a good manager.

The PHI Approach is nice and fuzzy BUT it's too drawn out and unrealistic.

If you get to work on time you have every right to leave on time too. interesting all employees talk about being on time and nobody talks about over time and leaving on time .labor laws need improvement.

supervisor speaks to the employee like a child and not a supervisor. The employee talks to the supervisor as if she is being scolded by her mother

It appears that the supervisor is treating the employee like a five year old. Is this possibly a joke?

This approach sucks. Get your ass to work on time, or we will find someone who will.

A basic requirement of a job is to be on time. I don’t understand why this is so difficult.

Why do we live in a society that babies employees/people..... at what point do we grow up and start taking responsibility for our own actions. If someone was to say, " The first person that arrives too work early, will receive a check for $5000.00," I guarantee she would leave home on time so she could arrive to work early. I absolutely refuse to baby grown adults.... if you are adult enough to apply for the job, you should be adult enough to do the job. Has anyone ever noticed how people can arrive to interviews on time, but can't arrive to work on time......As a manager I have always wondered, why do people apply for jobs that they don't want to do.....Bottom line, Get to work on time! !

How the hell does what you said help the people move even a single inch forward and improve the company? Mark you seem like you've faced this frustration more than once, been let down, repeated failed promises, must be incredibly annoying. However you seem like someone who's been a manager or a while so you're doing something right and feeling confident in other areas of your work. The thing you've always wondered about, it is also frustrating isn't it as it stops you moving forward too? L:ike fumbling in the dark and awkwardly hitting your head, painfully stubbing your toe. This is the same pain your workers are feeling as they wonder why they keep failing at getting to work on time, trying different options and still disappointing you and themselves, letting down customers and the company, threatening their ability to put food on the table as I'm sure you would consider important. Mark I would appreciate if you wish to share what have you tried before and how did the PHI approach go for you?

Well, I know why people apply for jobs they don't want it's because they need money but don't have the skill set to do something else 98% of the time. With that said, I've been in a job that I don't like for the last 10 years and I do it because I need to get paid. That doesn't mean I show up late or don't take my job seriously. I have a very strong work ethic and I'm ALWAYS 10-15 minutes early. I find that the people who take their jobs less seriously are usually those who don't need the money as badly like 20 somethings who still live with their parents or someone who is just using the job as supplemental income. I think "need" is a very big determining factor in how an employee is going to treat their job. I can't tell you how many times I've seen young kids get hired and they disappear without a word as soon as they get their first paycheck because someone else is supporting them...

Nobody is waiting around for me when I’m late and I’ve been late almost everyday for 2 years I don’t think my job cares very much but then again I do my job better than anyone else so I guess I’ll take the good with the bad. I told my boss straight up if I was on time everyday I would have been on there necks about getting a raise so I tell them that it benefits them as well a little manipulation goes a long way at work.

The manager is acting like a professional counselor! The problem--the employee is a heroin addict. There is no way to be certain this is a traffic issue! The supervisor is wrongly participating diagnostic assessment and taking responsibility for counseling the employee. No referral to the EAP!?!?!...oh, no EAP?? If this employee is a drug addict, she just snowed the supervisor and the problem and risk will return.

If she really hated being late she would take into account the road work and leave early enough to accommodate for the delays. If her home health client makes it troublesome for her to leave in time to get to work, she needs to choose which job is her priority. Imagine catering and babying each employee like this?
