Here is this year's contribution to Earth Day, taken in a slightly different direction which I hope you'll enjoy and find helpful. It's an art project of sorts, but is also a whirlwind science summary of our situation.
Thanks especially to Kristin Anton for her artwork and the following for their valuable input: Leslie Batt-Lutz, Elizabeth Sirianni, Jake Gold Productions, Joan Diamond, DJ White, Tristan Harris, Rex Weyler, Kyle Saunders, Zak Stein, Tad Patzek, and Chuck Watson.

I love the cyclical and rhythmic pattern to Nate's content. We are witnessing a philosopher refine his story. Remarkable! We need SYNTHESIS. Way beyond being interdisciplinary, we need new disciplines that are restructured for the era we are in and moving towards. The more I envision a Great Simplification in my life and the lives of the people I love, the more I feel a sense of intimidation on a grand hero's journey, a sense of vulnerability, and a sense of peace and meaning being attainable. We could rediscover what it really feels like to be living creatures part of nature, not automatons divorced from life, aimless. I believe Nate is getting very close to redefining wealth NOT as materialism, but as Self-Determination. This is my definition. I believe when we live out the adventures and creative pursuits that call out to us, that are almost not at all materialistic, we tap into the greatest source energy of all: MEANING.

So long I have spent struggling to solve problems in communicating these principles which Nate has produced with precision and clarity beyond compare. I look at your short videos as must-see content for anyone looking to understand the circumstances we must face together on this earth. They cleave past jargon and partisanship to acknowledge a clear and ghastly global future as it is being manifested by our global past and present. I have wasted decades, crudely trying to make people change their reality. As I have come to better understand that it is perception which creates reality, this work of yours is essential for how effectively it can transform perception. Thank you for helping my mind and heart and tongue find so much clarity. I hope this reaches far and wide.

Brilliant material , concepts, ideas, evidence, creativity, science, knowledge thank you Nate for creating this work. The information you share is so valuable and will ripple out to others. We need to simplify now not later. Finding meaning in simplicity , interconnectedness with nature and people, to share resources, care for each other and the environment which we all depend. It is a sense of gaining that needs to be built, not a sense of loss for what we could miss out on. Fascinating and challenging times ahead indeed. And so much to gain from simplification.

Excellent summary of our predicament, the human overshoot of Earth's capacity, and some pathways toward genuine solutions. Overshoot, of course, is a natural phenomenon, seen in most successful species. Even in our gardens we witness everything growing into each other. In nature, all solutions to overshoot involve contraction. No exceptions.

The art and poetry in this video are breathtaking. If you offered this Tarot deck for sale as a fundraiser, I'd definitely buy one. But I have to ask, what are you unable to say even here (The Forbidden, 00:47:53)? All the bad news that you and your guests bring us gives me odd comfort, knowing that someone is speaking truth to power. If I'm going to be hit by an onrushing train, I'd rather see it coming and at least imagine I could get out of the way. I didn't learn of The Great Simplification until mid-2023. I listened to all the back episodes of the podcast, but this can't translate into audio. Someone who was just turned on to you by someone who was just turned on to you by me and someone else we all know alerted me to this video, and I'm ever so glad that she did.

That was amazing Nate thank you so much! Must have taken so much effort and it was very creative and cool. Based on the kinds of things discussed here, it sounds like our species has missed the chance the become space faring -- if the building of space-stuff requires the wild excesses of the last 70 years to even have the metals, scientists and will spare to launch things off of the planet then what chance do we have when the only way to build rockets (we have seen) is have massive economic growth and surplus. Why would humanity focus on the exorbitant cost of getting into space when there is only subsistence down here. Maybe this is the great filter. No civilization uses its gifted resources well enough to make it to space. Great stuff thank you again!

Excellent presentation Nate Hagens I really wanted to share this video about advancement toward an ecologically responsible society, but I cannot because it promoted the very dangerous policy of taxation of nonrenewable resources. Carbon taxes and the like will benefit the established authorities and market leaders to such an extent that all other people will become enslaved and by setting a price on pollution the greatest polluters will wash their hands of guilt while paying the politicians just enough to prevent competion, but not enough to help anyone. In a global society that keeps more than 85% of the children in poverty there is no reasonable argument for trusting our governments to do anything but kill. It's true that we must recalibrate and develop a sustainable and responsible alternative society. Pollution and excessive energy use must be corrected, but that won't happen if we rely on the benevolence and creativity of the most ruthless and dishonest people. It won't happen while people are fighting each other for food and status. It can't happen while our minds are preoccupied with war. First, we must (nearly) eradicate poverty. When people are empowered then they can exercise their will to behave responsibly. Some enlightened individuals find empowerment within and they may live peaceful lives of material poverty and social isolation. Most people have not made peace with death and they cannot think clearly until they establish a modicum of wealth and security. Although there will be a great expenditure of energy as we enrich billions of people, those people are the key to cleaning up the mess we have made. If we trap them in the current culture of rape and abuse then the talents and potential of billions of people will continue to be wasted and the world will go up in flames as the hungriest fools battle for access to clean water and reproductive allowances. On the other hand, if we empower everyone with access to the wealth of the earth then some fraction of that wealth will fund the reformative revolution which must occur if we hope not to completely destroy ourselves and this wonderous planet.

You can group energy and materials together. Access to materials is dependent on energy. What makes materials finite is the enormous amount of energy required to get them.
@thegreatsimplification
@thegreatsimplification 2 года назад
Kind of. Atoms and joules ARE different. We need energy to move the materials around. We need materials to build the things. We need: energy, materials, technology and dollars - all 4- for everything in current economy. But agree fully w yr last sentence. Thank you
@borealphoto
@borealphoto 2 года назад
@@thegreatsimplification The idea is that atoms are already there and free to use but it takes energy to extract, refine, transform, etc. I got that from Jancovici. It takes materials out of the equation and greatly simplifies things. Technology also comes down to energy. Educating that many people to adulthood is a matter of energy and materials, so just energy. It reiforces the idea of money as proxy for energy, and how our economic systems are virtual representations of nature.
@thegreatsimplification
@thegreatsimplification 2 года назад
 @Erick L i think they are different - but do overlap as you say. We can have an abundance of energy but still be short of some key materials -for instance alloys that would require orders of magnitude more energy to recycle, if possible at all. Then there is the energy quality issue, which i really didnt get into. Only 20% of global energy use is electricity -which is what most renewables provide
@borealphoto
@borealphoto 2 года назад
@@thegreatsimplification "Orders of magnitude' is still an amount of energy, so is "more energy than the Universe contains". Theoretically, we could transform energy into matter because E=mc2. I didn't even think about it before our exchange but they are indeed the same thing. I'm not saying this to be a wise-ass but it simplifies things and I think it helps comprehend "the big picture". We live in the details though.

@@cristianmacinic1528 Yes, I'm curious about this very point, how that harmony became disharmony. Also how it will play out. My reading of Catton's Overshoot persuades me that it was the terrible "advance" made by the Anglos when the peculiar mix of technologies came together to make use of oil, that really ignited this fire. The argument is that it could have been any tribe, and that the underlying driver is human, not tribal. That's very significant imo because it might decrease tribal enmity. Might. But certainly many people share your view, that there is/was something especially cancerous about whites, perhaps especially Anglo-Saxons. That view could lead to a lot of bloodshed if/when things quickly go further wrong. And one could say yes well, that's karma, look at what the Anglos did. And I guess I'd have nothing to say if I faced an angry mob. "Uh ... I'm not Anglo, I'm German"?
