I just got a 388 on OfferUp for $1,500! The listing said good condition, brought it home and tested each mic input and everything with the mixer seems to work fine. loaded up a tape reel and tested RW/FF/PLAY and discovered the first issue, it would engage for a second but then stop or wind very slow. Checked each of the fuses under neath the top panel and they tested out OK, so I opened up the bottom panekl and discovered that the belt had deteriorated completely off, so I ordered a new one and am hoping this replacement will make it fully functional again! cant wait to start recording with this thing.
Excellent! I have many fond memories spending many hours recording on this deck. I wish this video existed back then. I did not have a service manual, no internet and it took quite awhile to figure it out. I think it is awesome that you will offer affordable calibration tape alternatives for us hobbists! YOU ROCK!
Had a chance to cop one of these juuuuust before the price skyrocketed - it was like $400 or something crazy. I think that one video by Shawn Lee is what did it lol
Hey Matt, thanks for the great info on the elusive 388. I did this procedure and all went well, except it seemed that all the tracks reproducing were pegging the VU’s on the Master Stereo out VU. Is this normal, or do my master VUs need to be calibrated at 0 as well?
Hi Neil, Great question. I don't know off the top of my head. I'm away from the shop. I'll look into this and get back to you next week. For now, have you lowered the master output fader?
@@5thcomm thanks for responding! Yes, when I lower the fader to about 3 or 4 on the master fader it is at about zero, with all other faders at unity reading at 0db, 1k 250nwb. The manual says to set at -10 for 250nwb tapes, but at 400hz.. Just wanting to record some tracks... Thank you so much for your help .
