Out of all the freeze dried/dehydrated meals I've had, Heather's Choice meals were the worst. It tastes like the ingredients were never cooked together. Like everything was dehydrated separately, placed in the bag, and then when you add heated water it's commingling for the first time. I would never buy them again.

Please give a review of the day after experience!!! I had a delish, 4 cheese lasagna once in the backcountry and the next was insane. Every 30 min - it was like some stink, mountain splash demon was coming outta me. How does it affect you digestive system after? I would love your opinions. Thx!!!
Ordered a 3 pack of sockeye chowder. Worst backpacking meal I have ever had. Gave the other 2 away. Buddy tried it and couldn't get past the first bites. Horrendous. Maybe a bad batch but I would never try another one. Peak refuel wins for me and the family. Mountain house has too much sodium and is hard on the hut and amount of where compared to Peak. But I would eat mountain house over Heather's choice. I would probably eat my rubber rand on my boots over the sockeye chowder
I’ve tried most of the HC meals, the high quality ingredients is what first drew me in but I personally didn’t care for any of them, I did like the packaroons though. I prefer peak refuel meals but everyone’s taste buds are different.
I did my own taste test on HC and I could not give a thumbs up to any of them. Peak Refuel has been the winner for me. Thanks for giving more back country food choices the “Pepsi Challenge”!
I have not tried the dinners but the breakfast are not good. Love the packaroons though. I like Peak brands a lot....but man breakfast is simple....if you cannot make a decent breakfast not sure I would spend the money on the dinners. But here's the thing...if it taste good its probably not as good for you. If it taste bad its probably better for you.
Ive only tried the bison chili, after that i sold the remaining. First few bites were okay but by the end I was gagging and about barfed. I’m not a big freeze dried meal guy but I don’t mind mountain house, backpackers pantry, and peak meals. I’m so glad for this review, I was expecting all of them to get great reviews but this video wasn’t like that and I appreciate the honesty. It makes me want to give other freeze dried meals a chance.
Like alot of Heathers choice stuff the curry and crazy named ones ethiopian dorawat! I like that one; but the one I ran into I could NOT do was the salmon chowder? the packaroons are out of this world - any of them and her blueberry breakfast is top notch.
Heather's Choice Fat Bombs (Packaroons) are awesome, their dinner meals are pretty ok. Their breakfast suck, really suck. They have that vomit flavor from the buckwheat (or possibly actual vomit). They need to change things on their breakfast.

Would love to see you guys test Wild Zora and Next Mile Meals. I love Peak Refuel but I'm pretty petite so 2 servings is a lot of food for me on a solo backpacking trip. I've been trying to explore more options that come in single serving sizes but am not a huge fan of Heather's Choice.
Brady and Chris also Ben did I miss the exsperation dates for the meals some are good for 25 years. The Salmon sounds great. I'm going to try them All. I love that Heather's Choice has options that fit my dietary restrictions. However, I have found that everything is pretty darn bland and in desperate need of salt (and I don't typically salt my food). The chowder is probably my most preferred but I found that the vegetables were chopped too fine. I want to bite into a bite of potato. The spaghetti is also like fine. Needs salt. And I don't understand why she chose to chop up noodles like that instead of using like a ritoni or something.
These dehydrated (not freeze dried) meals are very tasty and nutritious. Compared to some of the popular packing meals these have lots of protein. The flavors are robust and unique. I get real tired of the same old chicken rice stew and whatever stroganoff. Heather’s Choice meals are top shelf.
Maybe it's just me but I don't think an entree should be counted up or down in rating based on the level of spiciness/heat. Lots of people cannot handle hot foods and so the fact that they are limiting the heat level is wise. People who like extra spice should bring a little baggie of their own heat as an add-in. Think of all the people who would not be able to eat that on the trail if it had too much spice or they would be crapping behind every tree.
My favorites are the Chicken Mole (exquisite) and the Salmon Chowder. I am Alaskan and I approve. I have tried all their other backpacking meals as I will support small business in Alaska, Heather is nice, her food is dehydrated and not freeze dried, and its a list of real food ingrediants, attractive and tasty. My other fav is Peak Nutrition, which I have eaten tons of. I don't eat junk, and I would rather eat quality food or not at all. Salt does not impress my palate.These packets have little salt but flavors are very, very apparent and intelligently selected.
I actually grew up eating mole regularly. It is one if not THE most complex sauces that you can make and takes hours and many ingredients to prepare. I recommend ordering it at a high quality Mexican restaurant especially if they make their own. Some of them are a little sweeter than others which is typical of the very dark brown moles. There are different colors of mole based on their ingredients. I suggest purchasing a bottle of Dona Maria (It comes in the dark brown which I prefer and also a green one, read the ingredients) and adding it to the chicken broth after boiling a chicken. Most grocery stores sell them in the Mexican aisle. I do my own pressure canning and I have chicken and mole pressure canned.
