During a particularly nasty heatwave 3 or so years ago, I made a bell pepper watermelon gazpacho for a 3-day convention. It was intended as a refreshing appetizer for the bbq on day 1, but turned out to be a great way for people to get in hydration and nutrition at the same time. We had been dreading a lot of heat strokes, but our guests loved the gazpacho so much they kept coming back for more. The initial portion was 60 servings, and we ended up making another two batches for days 2 and 3 because people were struggling with eating warm foods and other menu items that had been planned long before the event (and the arrival of the heatwave). If you are having trouble eating regularly during extreme heats, I can only recommend gazpacho! It is easy to make, keeps well in the fridge and is ever so delicious. :)

A little additional knowledge: Birch water can actually help traumendously with hay fever, and is very easy and inexpensive to harvest from trees. Living in denmark, we spent a lot of time in nature for education; one thing we learned was how to easily tap a birch tree. We had a little gathering of birch trees near my school, with taps in each one. There was always a full bottle at atleast one of the trees, so after school the kids could go gather a bottle for themselves, or share one among their group. My friends dad had serious issues with hay fever and allergies, that would cause him to be bed written for weeks, when summertime came around. The only thing he found helped was a bottle of birch water in the morning. Wether it be a placebo effect, or not, it atleast helped get him back to work! :) Little disclaimer: it is not a medicine!! It can help, but will not cure an illness! Alternative suppliments are great, but refering to a doctor will help you a lot more!

As s bit of a supplement - this is mostly the same effect as having local honey.. Birch sap overall won't help, it has to be from where you live so that the local varietal and pollen is what you're consuming. It's about reminding your immune system, "oh, yes, this is a normal thing. Carry on."

I had wanted to hear Ben say how many g of Spiralina were in the water, he did say it wasn't the 3g recommended.
@alexsis1778
@alexsis1778 3 года назад
@@nicole3977 Not quite true since it has other stuff in it which would make it heavier but 330mL of pure water weighs 330g and Mike said .05% of it is Spiralina so that comes out to .165g. So probably more realistically somewhere in the .25g per bottle amount? Honestly not enough to be an actual supplement, but then you generally don't want a general drink to come close to a recommended dosage in case someone drinks like 5 of them in a day. Their purpose is pretty clearly not to be a health drink either. Its just to be a nice tasting drink that happens to be healthy.

Probably my all time favorite Rimmer Rant™! :) Rimmer: [drunkenly telling the story behind his last words "gazpacho soup"] It was the greatest night of my life; I had been invited to the Captain's table. I had only been with the company FOURTEEN YEARS. Six officers and me... they called me "Arnold!" We had gazpacho soup for starters... I didn't know that gazpacho soup was meant to be served cold. I called over the chef and told him to take it away and bring it back hot! So he did... the looks on their faces still haunt me today! I thought they were laughing at the chef, when all the time they were laughing at me as I ate my piping hot gazpacho soup! I never ate at the Captain's table again. That was the end of my career. If only they'd mentioned it in basic training! Instead of having us climbing up and down ropes and crawling on your elbows through tunnels--if only just ONCE they would've mentioned that gazpacho soup was served cold--I would've been an admiral by now!...instead of a nothing, which is what I am, let's face it... I never got off the bottom rung, and do you know why? It's because I didn't have the right nobby parents! I'll bet Todd Hunter was fed gazpacho soup as soon as he was on solids! No, I'll bet he was breast-fed on it! One side gazpacho soup, the other side freely-dispensed chilled champagne!

I know this is 3 years gone, but when I do my own kombucha for the second ferment, I love adding ginger and pineapple. Then all if a sudden GT Dave's now makes golden pineapple lol. Its very lovely. Only downside -normal fruit second ferment usually takes 2 to 4 days(depending on temps) before going into the fridge. Ginger and pineapple tends to get super fizzy and carbonated in 1 to 2 days tops. I didn't have any bottles explode but I did paint the kitchen ceiling with it 2 different times. I use old swint top style beer bottles and aldis Italian lemonade swingtop bottles for safe carbonation. But the pineapple makes volcano eruptions 🌋

The Gazpacho is my favorite because that seems to be something you could easily make at home and not have to pay 4 quid a bottle for. Seems like it would preserve really well too, maybe you could even freeze it with good results? The spirulina thing I'd rather just have access to the powder itself and be able to use it for things than pay that price for lemon water which again is super easy to make at home. I'm from Sweden and I have tasted birch sap before and I'm not a fan, I am a fan of it getting popular though because it's such a simple product and birch trees are pretty easy to come by over here. I have never tasted kombucha so I can't really say much about that.

I would absolutely love gazpacho as a standard lunch option in supermarkets, though I am rather biased as I have Crohn's and celiacs and so can't eat salads (too high fiber) or sandwiches. My mum used to make it when I was a kid, as she grew all the veg in the greenhouse, and it was my favourite lunch by far. The price is a bit steep, but it'll likely come down if it gets popular. I'd also like supermarkets to do those rice triangles (onigiri?) that they do in Japanese corner stores, with those two-part wrappers to keep the seaweed dry. They were basically the perfect lunch food. They're naturally gluten-free (it's just sushi rice, seaweed, and a blob of something flavourful in the middle), some flavours are naturally vegan, they're really filling, and you can eat them at a desk without getting your fingers dirty. One of those with a bottle of gazpacho would be a great lunch.

Hey, if you're intrested in som new tastes, you could try the Rosehip soup that's fairly popular is Sweden. It's something people here grew up with, but it's something I haven't seen elsewhere, even in other nordic countries. Maybe a new series like "Taste testing new flavours" :)

A bowl of rosehip 'jelly'/soup (kiisseli) was a staple dessert and snack in my Finnish nursery school so it seems to be a thing in Finland and Sweden at least! Nordic cuisine is very similar to each other. We also do birch sap and fir/spruce branch sprout syrup things in Finland

In Bulgaria we have something similar to the gaspacho - it's a cold raw soup called tarator. It's made of yogurt, water, fresh cucumber diced into small cubes, some fresh dill, some chopped walnuts, salt, olive oil and garlic. We love it especially in summer but it's usually very VERY odd for foreigners the first time they try it. Cures hangover too. 😀

Sav means sap. Also, you can harvest your own birch sap in spring. Birches drink a LOT of water in spring. And pick the birch buds and dry them to make birch tea. Early birch leaves make good schampo as well! Tear small leaves and stuff in a jar or bottle, add cold water, let sit for min 30 min then shake thoroughly before using as schampoo. You will notice it starts lathering when it's ready to use. Aaand, finally, you can use the roots of the birch to make your own natural kitchen utensils like a whisk.

My first thought about item 3 was Rimmer's dying words on Red Dwarf, "Gazpacho soup"! And as the lovely Mike points out that many Britons may be unfamiliar with gazpacho, how was Rimmer to know it was *supposed* to be served cold?

well the sugar, in the blue spirulina drink, comes from the agave syrup. Which is pure sugars, not refined sugars. Agave syrup is about 2/3 pure sugars. This is a drink meant to try and get people out of refined sugars in their diet, not at people wanting to introduce it into their diet. Still, an excess amount of any sugars, both refined and pure, can lead to health problems. However, pure sugars, like those found in agave/maple syrup/honey/ect, are actually way more beneficial than refined sugars. Not because of the sugars themselves being easier on the body, but also the dozens of other benefits the given substance attributing the sugars gives. In this case though, with Agave syrup, its actually one of the worst altertnatives that they could have chosen. There are other blue spirulina drinks out there that choose better. There is one that uses organic maple syrup as its sugar contributor. Which is both better sugars but as well having dozens of antioxidents and vitamins/minerals compared to agave syrup.

Speaking natural blue drinks, you guys should do butterfly pea flower tea. It’s a type of dried flower from Southeast Asia and is used as a tea or natural blue food coloring (my mother is from Thailand and she used it as a natural dye for candies and desserts) and there is an interesting reaction when you add citrus that changes the tea purple and when mixed with hibiscus, it changes pink. I love the stuff, hard to get a hold off but the flavor is beautiful and mild and has a lot of good healthy properties.

@SORTEDfood In Denmark a non-alcoholic alternative to wine has become quite popular, one of the most ones I have most experiences with is called 'Dagmar' juice. They've been created, combined and mixed by a number of chefs to suit different types of courses, and act as a replacement for wine for fine dining. I personally recommend the on MDP02, which is based on green grapes, ruebarb, gooseberry and rosemary.
