As a guy who works in vineyards in Mendoza, Argentina, I'm so happy to see how popular Mendoza´s wine is...in my family we've got nearly 40 hectares of vineyards with different varieties for red wines but we're starting to work with one of the most famous from our country, "Malbec"...in fact I was surprised they choose a Cavernet suavignon before a Malbec but it is still a great choice n_n

It depends. I can comfortably tell the difference between a shitty cab sauv and a decent one. The difference is between decent and amazing. There is a pretty quick run-off in value with wine. A $10000 bottle won't taste substantially better than a 75$ bottle but a $30 bottle will be a hell of a lot better than a $10 bottle

As a French guy, i really don't see the point of spending more than €20 a bottle on wine. Now maybe the import cost messes with the price, but the good wines I like usually average at around 15 a bottle. Mostly French, but i've had some Spanish, Italian, US and South African wines at around those prices that were good. Plenty of more expensive wines just either weren't any better or way too expensive for being a bit better. All time favorite so far was a Bordeaux wine, though a South African one was damn close, both around 16 a bottle. Also, good chance that $36 NZ wine was corked. Bad smell can be a dead giveaway. Wine is just not supposed to smell 'bad'.

The extreme price inflation is mainly because they are in Japan I think. Based on my experience 90% of good tasting wine was between 10 - 30€ here in France/Italy/Germany

TBH Champagne's prices are just based on the status they acquired when they started serving it to the king (when we still had one), but it's objectively awful. Just get a decent 10-20€ wine bottle from a small independant vineyard and I guarantee you'll enjoy it a lot more.

@@robing.9849 yep that’s the way to go. There are many Crémant makers that are equally good or better. Fun fact, for Champagner production, they are not allowed to irrigate their fields, which is crazy if you look at years like this year

@@robing.9849 yeah, i’ve always laughed at idiots who bought 50 or even $100+ bottles of champagne. I’ve never had expensive champagne that didn’t have an equivalent at a fraction of the price. Actual non sparkling wine is more nuanced. There are some very good expensive wines, so better than champagne. And the same issue for both wine and champagne for me: finding the right ones that suits your taste. Can take a lot of semi random purchasing to find one i like, personally. And then a lot of them taste significantly different if i can’t find the same year. Good vintages get so damn hard to find after a while

WARNING: Nerdy comment essay below: Tbf, "p*ss and vinegar" isn't just a common Western saying, it's a very very old one so the meanings for it might vary a lot (like how the term gay is now most known to represent a s*xual orientation and not just to mean somebody is happy). The English language is a Frankenstein hodge-podge of a language that's constantly changing, and one word can be used for a multiple different things based on context. For my elderly family members while growing up, "p*ss and vinegar" would interchangeably be used as either good or bad connotation (normally just to mean somebody has a really strong personality or they're feeling very outspoken/energized atm).
