The best structure and drivetrain bar none !!! However, the deficit was the low power and low torque powerplant. I love the sound of the old air cooled Tatra engines, especially the V12 naturally aspirated engine which was installed in the T-813 8x8 kolos and T-813 6x6 prime mover. The unmistakable high pitch sound of the cooling turbine, for some reason much louder in some engines than others, was something that stuck in my memory to this day. My father got into a 1975 Tatra T-813 8x8 kolos (light olive drab color) which he used throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s as a prime mover, and for some reason the cooling turbine in his truck was much louder at a higher pitch sound than the three other Tatra T-813 8x8 kolos (dark olive drab) and the one T-813 6x6 TP (orange color) which arrived at the company at later dates, 1977 and 1978. Anyway, during exploitation the 1975 Tatra T-813 8x8 kolos appeared to be of a slightly better quality than the others which arrived just few years later. A great truck all around, even though it was grossly underpowered (260 hp and 680 ft/lbs torque) for its size and the intended use !!!! The backbone drivetrain structure is the best engineering I’ve ever seen to this very day in 2019 !!!! If you could’ve made that 17.6 liter naturally aspirated engine into a turbocharged engine and the charged air being cooled through an air-to-air cooler, I bet you that, that engine could’ve developed at least 450 bhp @ 1500 RPM and at least 1450 ft/lbs torque @ 900 RPM back then with the 1970s fuel delivery technology ! Just imagine the Tatra T-813 8x8 kolos with that awesome sounding 17.6 liter air cooled engine roaring turbocharged and developing 450 hp and 1450 ft/lbs of torque back then in the 1970’s !!!! It would’ve put to shame even the American competition equipped with turbocharged Caterpillar and Cummins engines !!! But then, no one can ever have something made by humans which is made just perfect in every way, especially living in a grossly imperfect world with very, very imperfect human beings in control, do we? 😂 In my opinion, the Tatra T-813 8x8 kolos with its large 4 door crew cab was the best looking truck Tatra ever produced !!! Even though there were plenty of issues which could’ve been improved, door latch systems, door hinges design, vertical cab space could’ve been improved a bit by lifting the cab by at least 25 cm and eliminating that wheel cowling under the front seats and at the same time lowering the engine cowling, adding a few cm’s to the cab roof height, better windshield rubber seal to prevent that annoying and endemic water leakage in those T-813 models, but the overall “square” design and appearance of the T-813 cab was much better looking than the rounded T-815 cab which Tatra started producing in 1982 !!! The T-815 cab was NOT an improvement compared with the T-813 cab when it cones to looks and driver’s seat positioning ! In the T-815 they moved the front seats forward and it felt like you were seating with your face and knuckles stuck to the windshield and your knees stuck to the front skin of the cab. The T-813 cab with the front seats placed further back gave you a bit more breathing room, but like I’ve said, due to the wheel cowlings there was very little vertical room in that cab. Maybe if they would’ve kept the squareness and the front grille look of the T-813 cab and combined into it the volume of the T-815 cab back in 1982, I think that Tatra could’ve achieved their second masterpiece in 1982 ! The T-815 came with many improvements, but the cab was a very ugly disaster !!! The DAF CF cab is not a good solution for the late model Tatra trucks !!! I would’ve went for the wider and roomier XF cab from DAF, but mostly I would’ve developed a modern Tatra cab which reintroduced allot of the visual identifiable aspects of the T-813 cab, (kind of like a late model BMW keeping certain visual aspects of the classic design which tells you that it is a BMW even if you don’t see the emblem), not the same cab, but a modern much improved flat floor and full 2500mm in width cab, extra wide dashboard to place some room between the occupants and the windshield, placed on air ride suspension, well put together and insulated thermally and for sound, with the capability for expansions and different configurations for different applications without modifying the main structure, and I tell you that Tatra trucks would’ve turned some heads in those truck shows around the world !!! For the category of trucks which Tatra is producing, mainly tactical high mobility vehicles (for both military and civilian use), construction and agriculture, they don’t really need to deal with the european length legislation for commercial on road cargo vehicles when designing the cabs. So, why not designing something very modern, but at the same time practical, keeping the classic T-813 visual effects and aspect ratios as a form of “brand visual identification”, comfortable and good looking for that particular category? The car and truck manufacturers from the former communist countries never understood that the visual effects and ratios associated with a certain brand is the very thing which identifies that brand in the human subconsciousness and is the very thing which helps allot at keeping your brand alive on the crazy markets of the day !!! Huge design changes which lose the classic visual aspect associated with your brand, is the very thing which killed allot of brands over the years !!! The T-138 is the classic Tatra truck image for the “conventional” bonneted design, and the T-813 is the classic Tatra truck image for the “cab over” flat front design. You step away from these as they did in 1982 with the T-815, and you lose big on the market. The human subconsciousness is a powerful thing and it has nothing to do with what’s practical most of the time !!! It’s the very thing which keeps in your memory the face of your loved ones as “irreplaceable” and at the same time it helps you see the face of the parents in the face of the children. Once you associate a certain look to a certain brand, usually the look of the first successful model, then you expect to see that particular look from one generation to the other. The marketing psychology is the lifeblood of brand success !!! Combine that with quality of the product and a good aftermarket support, and you’ve got the world by its balls !!!!
Very interesting "overseas" review ! If managers of Tatra were not idiots, users reviews like this would be pure gold for them. I think that "comfort of driver" was pain of almost all eastern-bloc cars. Other thing is that it was primary military vehicle. So they needed to keep some (non public) military specs. Army was most important "customer" at that times. Civil market was secondary. ps: for me is Tatra 148 most beautiful one.
I remember these Tatras! Soviet drivers said, "We regret that we do not preserve your Tatras." These were real hard workers with great forms of movie characters.
Tatra piękna maszyna..stare dobre solidne auta..aż łza się kręci w oku..czar wspomnień..niesamowity dzwięk silnika V8 chłodzonego powietrzem...super auto.

After the velvet revolution, many companies in Czechoslovakia bought Mercedes, MAN and DAF trucks for offroad work and were so surprised how easily they topple over, because they were used to Tatra and expected the western trucks to perform even better.
sharpshooterCZ200S Even if i was, that doesnt change the fact that the truck is ugly. But the Tatra V570, T77, T87, T97 and the T600 are decent looking cars.
tom slick Sorry, but you're ugly and stupid... TATRA V570, T77, T87, T97, T600 is passenger car. TATRA 148 is heavy off-road truck. Each category has different priorities...
sharpshooterCZ200S i know they are different categories, i was just saying that tatra makes other good looking vehicles. but there are plenty of better looking heavy equipment vehicles out there. but regardless, the 148 is funny looking. just look at that funny looking grill, and the headlights are too far apart.
