In this video, I visit the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and join a guided tour of the hangar containing Spitfires, Hurricanes, Chipmunks and the Lancaster. I then make my way to Tattershall Castle to absorb some history and autumnal colour.
After experiencing 360 degree views of Lincolnshire from the top of Tattershall Castle, I look closely at the many examples of historic graffiti etched on its ancient walls.
Then my journey takes me to Woodhall Spa, but on the way I stop off at Kirkstead Abbey, a ruin dating back to 1139. Then at Woodhall Spa, with Remembrance Day approaching, I pay my respects to the war memorials and visit the local 'Victorian Cake Shop' which had recently provided lunch for King Charles III during his recent trip to the BBMF.

The difference between fascinating historical graffiti and plain vandalism is two hundred years.

The older graffiti always seems to have had much more care with it also. I can’t see some of the hasty modern scribbles lasting 200/300. There was a project done at Tattershall all about the graffiti in the castle and it’s available as a small book in the entrance shop. They searched the whole castle apparently.

Re why the abbey ruin has shrunk over centuries, I would guess in the times before the modern concern with conservation or the invention of the National Trust or English Heritage, ancient abbey ruins would have provided a free source of building materials, stone, bricks etc. Incidentally, various Lincolnshire historic places are now impressively signposted and there are lots of information boards. It wasn't like that when I lived there.

Absolutely, imagine finding out part of your house was once part of an historical abbey. So much history on the doorstep.

@HikingForHealth1 It's interesting and well documented that many early Christian churches in England were built using materials taken from abandoned Roman buildings. Anglo Saxon churches can still be seen with a carved head of Venus, or Hercules, or similar on a stone, making part of the structure. Roman stones were dressed to a high standard and were eminently reusable.

They were certainly ahead of their time. I did a hike recently around Ancaster. They have a copy of the Dea Matres outside the church and the original can be found in the Lincoln Collection Museum. Time Team did a special there.
