god i love this movie the end where he hits the mirror and shows footage of the streets like the beginning the movie restarts some would say that means travis would go on to kill again
My favorite movie ending along with Psycho, Inception, and Fight Club. Bickle's look of pure anxiety and insanity truly shows his acting ability and Scorcese's vision. Masterpiece.
I think the jarring, unfriendly-to-the-ear sound, represents his return, or rather a reminder to the audience that he is still a highly disturbed person, still Travis Bickle. Still lonely.
That doesn't necessarily have to make it fact. Art is open to interpretation, even those the artist didn't intend. If he wants to interpret the ending as a dream, then he can.
I think violence against the system is still intact in Travis's mind, judging his cold glance on the mirror. This movie is also the biggest anti-war movie ever made.
I think Scorsese and Schraeder want it to remain ambiguous. Think about how his reflection suddenly disappears in the mirror at the end...as if he isn't there.
The parents/grandparents of Iris at the end, burk and iving who give travis a letter at the end they say when your were in the hospital in a coma... that means that he went into some kind of coma/hospital for a long time and iris returned, when he got out of that and back into his taxi driver routine and he picks up Betsy, it's almost as if too say she was always waiting for him there and she is everything he is missing in his life. He saved Iris because he couldn't get Betsy.
the opposite. the change of mood meant she was there. it was satisfaction on his side and a little remorse at first... then he got to be the good guy. it's so simple and yet so beautiful.
Why do people want to fuck up this ending with their "interpretations". This movie or the ending clearly conveys an idea that "the travis inside you" totally digs. And if your first reaction after seeing the movie was not a deep silent rage that came from your bones, I think you will never understand it the way I did.
When I first watched this movie, I interpreted this ending as a victory for DeNiro's character. Betsy is now impressed with him and would lke to go out with him again, however DeNiro is now rejecting her. A 180 degree change. Now I don't know...?
Travis is obsessed with Betsy but he only knew where she worked and did not know where she lived. Betsy lets her guard down after hearing that Travis is a hero and she lets him drop her off at her home. Standing by the cab she hesitates thinking if they should go out again but she wisely chooses not to and just asks "how much"? So here is me question. If Betsy really accept Travis again and ask him go out together, would Travis have a different reaction?
@redplague it's a hint that he's still insane. It's him 'snapping' again so it kind of hints towards it all starting Over. although the ending is disputed a lot
@redplague There are many explanations for that part. To me the most logical one is that he spots a new obsession, perhaps another girl like Iris or someone he might want to kill. Even though Travis seems to have become a hero in people's minds, he's still an unstable sociopath. Paul Schrader, the writer, had this to say: "Travis is not cured by the movie's end, he's not going to be a hero next time."
i agree funny how this was only his 2nd movie... that last scene where he looks in the mirror with the combination of the reverse music (reminding us he is not the stable person and in fact a time bomb waiting to explode) absolutely fantastic the script, the acting ,the music and most of all the camera work in one word genius
that buzz sound is heard then we see travis meaning he is all he sees now since betsy is gone and palentine got the nomination meaning he's back to square one and he see's his ugly face o loneliness again
ONE OF THE BEST ENDINGS IN FILM HISTORY!!!!!.....SCORSESE SAID TO US THAT THE KILLING AT THE END DID HAPEN AND HE MAKE US TO ASK OURSELFS(VIEWRS) IS TRAVIS STILL "CRAZY" OR NOT???
Continued.. Whether Travis gains that status in reality or only in his mind is not the point; throughout the film, his mental state has shaped his reality, and at last, in some way, it has brought him a kind of peace." Anyone saying that they know for a fact that the ending is real is a DUMMY
@choloman72 some people says that a 2:44 travis die. They say that's just a dream and he's at the hospital but i'm not shure about that. sorry about my english he's so bad.
Well had travis been a step faster in drawing his gun he would had been a murderer assiasin not a hero the rearview mirror scene shows he still is disturbed I think the director did exactly what he intended to keep people thinking is he still crazy or was all this unreal?
Well had travis been faster in taking out his gun he would had been a murderer assiasin not a hero, the rearview mirror scene implies he's still disturbed n empty the director did intend on making us think is he still crazy or is all this unreal?
Travis is a man trapped in his own mind. When he points his finger to his head and pretends to pull the trigger he is telling the audience this. Why would she get in his cab and pretend like the whole porno movie fiasco never happened, because he killed a pimp? That would more likely scare her off. I think that's more of a statement by Scorsese about violence being more acceptable in society than sexual oppression or prostitution. Just my two cents.
You dont pay attention to the scene much do you? How could Betsey know it was travis" cab when he was talking to the wizard while the doorman from the St. regis hotel escorted betsey into a cab. furthermore..in the Scene when travis puts his bloody fingers to his head hes Not pretending, He really wants to Kill himself but he ran out of bullets battling the pimps and gangster.
