While The Daily Record (which first reported this story) is a tabloid news outlet, this story was then picked up by skinfluencers on TikTok, creating a stream of misinformation and alarm linking facial fillers to cancer.
This was inaccurate. A study (as of yet not published) was presented at a conference for plastic surgeons by a US research team, which found “Hyaluronic acid - the key compound in most fillers - has been found to block lymphatic channels, which help the body drain fluid and are a key part of the immune system that helps to fight disease. Research is now being planned to see if the treatment affects the risk of diseases including cancer. Fillers have also been linked to cysts, lumps, swelling and facial pain.”
📌 See the pinned comment for a link to this statement. Some argue that because the study isn’t published yet, it shouldn’t be discussed until the medical community has a chance to review and respond. While others also argue that plastic surgeons have a financial bias against non-surgical cosmetic treatment like filler.
While I’m not an M.D., I am a TCM practitioner who practices facial cosmetic acupuncture, gua sha, cupping, etc. And this is just my opinion facial fillers’ impact looking through a TCM lens. This is not medical information or advice, just my opinion.
I hope this can start a constructive dialogue, where it’s not about Western vs Eastern medicine. Instead let’s use this opportunity to see how our medicines can work together to best serve you, our patients ❤️
