Oh wow, I remember playing this demo at K-Mart when I was like, 10 years old or something. Brings back some really nice memories. Thanks for uploading this, it's really interesting to see!
So in this demo version, a Koopa can transform you into a giant spiky turtle and send you to a 2D sidescrolling game where you chew on massive amounts of pork to destroy your enemies.
I like how they called it Paper Mario 2 because it made it come off as a continuation. It was wise to change it, but I would personally prefer if the title Paper Mario 2: The Thousand-Year Door.
@@Hysteria98 It would create this continuity between the games, and if subsequent games continued this trend, then it would encourage the Paper Mario devs to not forget about the series' past.
Goombella broke the 4th wall in a good amount of the video. But it doesn't matter since it's just a demo. EDIT: Why are people still liking this in 2017? EDIT2: Decided to fix the damn errors. Are you guys going to stop yet? EDIT3: Please stop. Also fixed more errors. EDIT4: This is just a running joke at this point.
Dang! I remember playing this while my parents were shopping at Sam’s Club back in the day, I vividly remember playing the Boggly Woods part over a few times due to the time limit and seeing how far I could get. I had to have been 10 or 11 at the time, I loved Paper Mario and was so pumped to find out it was getting a sequel. Thanks for the nostalgia!
I remember playing this at a kiosk at a Gamestop long ago, and for some reason the kiosk used the DK Bongo peripheral for the GameCube, and was confused how to play
I think it’s funny. Not only are there multiple subspecies of Piranha Plant that seem to thrive in their environments, the OG is still the most powerful-so powerful it’s relegated to an exclusive area. They do be surprisingly tanky on casual runs.
Can one pull off a stylish move in the real game when using Goombella's Tattle? I just beat the game for at least the fifth time and I never found that.
Certainly I don't mind, although, if I'm being honest, I'd recommend to record your own or search for another, as the quality of this is not the greatest.
Some additional changes I noticed: According to the Tattle at 29:11, Piranha Plants could migrate to the ceiling. According to the tattle at 33:57, Yux had two different attacks, whereas in the final version, it only has one. Spiky Goombas are called “Spiny Goombas” as shown at 3:26. The description for the Shine Sprite is different at 20:32. Koops’s line after leaving the spike room at 23:55 is different. In the final version, he says something along the lines of “Man, that was TOO close!” The partner’s overworld movement is different. Fir instance, Koops bugs out on the stair puzzle at 21:49 in a way I’ve never seen in the final, Flurrie moves more slowly at 26:49 and therefore tends to lag behind Mario, and Koops doesn’t hug the spikes at 23:40 the way a partner normally would in the spike room.
Something I’d also like to mention- Mario already has the power bounce despite the fact that it is impossible to get it before going into the Castle…I think. If I remember correctly.
+lukerbom12 If you can tell me what the disc was that had that demo you mentioned, then you sir, would be a god. This would be excellent for TCRF to cover.
+Colton Rushton I didn't have a disc. It was in Toys R Us, and I think there was also a version on the website. It was like a point and click game, where you just explored some of the new locations and got to know a few of the characters. Each area had a video that showed gameplay.
For some reason, this video excites me. I never got to experience The Thousand Year Door as a child, but... perhaps it's a matter of old-school demo hype!
I remember playing the demo at a toy r us store when I was younger and I went shit crazy wanting to play it. I still have the game today since It came out.
This was a very interesting demo. And we also know that Paper Mario 2 eventually became Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Years later, we now got a Nintendo Switch remake of it!
So I wasn't completely crazy. I remember talking to that Koopa in Petalburg sent you to the Bowser stage, but it was in the demo version after all these years. I wondered why I remembered that happening the first time I played this game, but could never recreate it
I remember playing this demo at Gamestop a long time ago. I kept playing the boweser stage over and over even though I didn't know why it kept ending the game afterwards.
I played it at sam's club along with Mario party 6, and Mario power tennis Idk about you but I believe 2004 was an awesome year for Mario games, I thought those were the best Mario games "ON" the GameCube. Not best Mario games in general though.
This brings back great memories of me playing this in my Kmart back in 2004, back when they were still a successful franchise and didn't close down every one in my area... I wish they still made demo discs like this, they were so much fun!
Old video, I know, but there exists a variation of this demo that includes the prologue in Rogueport as a selectable demo, filling out the menu at the start
Anyone else notice they called the Courage Shell a "Courage Cola?" I wonder if it originally had the Chuckola Cola icon with the same effect. The shell makes more sense for a defensive item. The Piders' web shots are definitely faster. I used to play this in the store before I finally decided to buy the game. I always got stuck at the river because I didn't know to check through the grass to build the bridge, so I didn't know you could get any farther.
I have a 'Interactive Multi-Game Demo Disc - Version 18.' But this demo's "Paper Mario2" has time limit. So, I cannot progress the story. How do you get rid of the time limit?
for some reason is the us version the note stating hooktail's weakness is a cricket in the og us release. but in the jp, demo, and switch version it says frog
This takes me back. I vividly remember jumping in the river in Petal Meadows until Mario died, and timing out when talking to the shopkeeper. I thought I chose the wrong option, so he killed Mario for it. Good times.
i own 4 gamecube kiosk demo discs id like to eventually own the entire set of them this game being one of my favorite games... id really like to own this one
How did you bypass the 10 minute limit? Did the demo actually let you save? Or did you find a cheat code to get around it? Wait, you just played through faster, didn't you. :headsmack:
***** I assume tha'ts an affectionate "you idiot"? I know how long the video is. I was assuming he cheated by playing through for 10 minutes, then starting it again, and getting back to where he was really quickly, and then recording again. It's either that or a cheat code.
There is a cheat code to force the game to be in story mode rather than demo mode, forcing the demo time to stop and forcing each room not to block you from certain areas. The code(s) can be found on the discussion page for the demo on the cutting room floor wiki.
In a way Paper Mario is the spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG. Square and Nintendo should get back together in a relationship and give us a true sequel to it or an HD release or put it on the Eshop. The game's 20th Birthday just passed on May 13th. Seems like Nintendo and Square forgot about their baby, Super Mario RPG.
This is all very interesting. Anyway, I am aware that these were for shops, but can someone tell me why I was able to find one on eBay if they’re not for resale, as the case says?
I remember playing the demo at a Walmart kiosk when I was younger, but I remember it having the final name of Thousand Year Door. Not too sure though :/
