Da-Da, Da-Da. Join Cody as he checks out this new hidden movement game based on the classic Steven Spielberg film from Ravensburger, and find out just how many times a reviewer can say the word "essentially" in one video!!!

Got this one some time ago and enjoy it very much. Its easy to get to the table and no matter how well one side may do in the fist act, there are things that balance the game in spite of that. Great for families or game groups.

i was immediately attracted to this game because of the theme. jaws = 1 giant monster + several severely outmatched people running around trying to deal with it. perfect! i had previously written off ravensburger as a publisher that focuses on mass market and was unlikely to ever make anything i'd like beyond the vastly redundant classics like schotland yard that i liked in the distant past. but now with this it seems they have been paying attention to the hobby gaming industry and are trying to bring some of that sophistication to the mass market. which, knowing how many people i meet who say they enjoyed board games a lot when they were younger, and are utterly ignorant of anything existing beyond catan. i believe there is a gigantic potential market still out there and this game suggests ravensburger might be looking to tap into that. if successful it could mean very big things for this hobby.

Great review! I picked this game up a few months ago, and really like it. It is a good game to introduce the hidden movement mechanic to new gamers. Of course, my wife always wants to play the shark (she also always plays Dracula in Fury of Dracula and Jack the Ripper in Letters from Whitechapel).

actually there's good reason to continue to be skeptical of licensed games. games have gotten better, yes, but the temptation for quick cash grabs is alive and well and continues to regularly manifest in mass produced games, which ravensburger is mostly known for.

Love the new intro and exit songs! They were better than the review. Hahahahaha. No really!!! Good review sir. Glad you like it. Me too. I sleeved the cards and sprayed a light coat of clear gloss spray paint on the chits. Very cheap card board for them. The clear spray helped seal them and make them more durable. Keep up the good work Cody.

Great review, Cody! I was going to get this one, but since I’m mostly a solitaire gamer it’s obviously not suitable. I appreciate you clearing up the lyrics to your extro song, too. For years I thought the words were “Once a year I wind up in the band!” That sparked all sorts of questions: what’s the name of the band, why does he only play once a year, who else is in the band, what kind of music do they play?

Thanks for these great reviews, Cody - definitely want to pick this one up soon. Do you think the two act structure serves the game well in terms of replayability? I recently watched a review of the 'Die Hard' board game, and the tri-act structure it had (I think it was) seemed to work to the game's detriment... having watched your review though, the hidden movement in conjunction with the boat finale seems to lend itself to more significant replays. Thanks again for all your reviews and classic cold starts ;P
@TheDiscriminatingGamer
@TheDiscriminatingGamer 4 года назад
Thank you, sir. I really like how the setup to Act II is a direct consequence of Act I. Making the shark more or less powerful based upon how successful he is in Act I is really a lot of fun, and I think that aspect will mean Act II will be fairly different every time you play.

I’ve played this twice as the shark and both times, I did very well during the first act and got a full hand of cards for the second act, while the heroes only got their default equipment. And both times, after destroying nearly the whole ship and killing one or two heroes while they whittled me down, and getting ready to desperately deliver the final blow on my next move, I lost at the very last minute via a single die roll, the slimmest of margins (not unlike the film!) It made me wonder though: if it’s consistently THAT close even when the shark “holds all the cards” so to speak, and the heroes end up with none, if somehow the heroes instead manage to get him quicker during Act 1 and tip the scales more in their favor, does the shark then even have a chance? Is there even a point to playing Act 2? I would think given my experience it would go from an even fight to a complete rout for the heroes. Now armed with way more weapons to use against a shark that has way fewer tricks up its sleeve. Tricks it seems to need every last one of in order to put up a fight. It seems funny to me that the game is very well-balanced, but only when the shark completely dominates round 1. Did you playthroughs give you any insight on this?

Curses! I had written this off (and thus out of my gaming budget) as a cheap cash grab, but I heard rumours that it was good, and now you go and praise it to the skies. . . What's a boy to do? Interesting that Universal properties can make great modern games (this, and Horrified) -- why can't Universal make great movies any longer? I saw Jaws at too young an age myself, and it ruined the ocean for me. . .
