My buddy who sold Toyotas in '82 got me a test drive in a Cressida. It was essentially a four door Supra and really a magnificent piece of engineering. A smart guy once said that a real driver's car is one that after a couple of blocks, you feel like you've been driving it all your life. There was simply nothing to think about in the Cressida. It just did exactly what you wanted and expected from it with no learning curve at all. All that with no divine intervention is pretty impressive, I think. 😉

The Cressida was a great car! My dad had a 1990. Thanks for watching

Awesome video. My uncle imported his baby blue two door from Puerto Rico to Bradenton, Florida back in the 2000’s. It made its way from Florida to Indianapolis where is spent most of his life and where I got rides to school in.. fast forward to 2023. I’m a proud owner of a four-door TE72, I’ve owned it since May 2020 and I enjoy it more than my brand new (at the time) 2018 Hatchback Civic. I would love to own a two door in the near future.

I've got an '82 KE70 wagon and I think it's the best feeling car I've ever driven. It's just so raw and fun but it does exactly what you want even though it's extremely sluggish with only 48 horsepower. Steering feels oddly direct and responsive too. I'm thinking of either doing an engine swap to a 4AGE or rebuilding the stock 4K to get around 100 horsepower. Great cars, super underrated.

It's a really cool old.car but yeah a swap would definitely help. It's super underpowered haha

Steering box is basically a set of gears that move a pitman arm which moves a longer bar that has tie rods attachted to it whereas a rack and pinion, the gear is attachted to the rack directly as opposed to having a box with gears move another arm which in turn moves the wheels.

I appreciate the quick explanation of the steering box!

I've never seen this Corolla ever. However, my mom had a 1984 Nissan Sentra with a manual transmission and it drove really well back in the 90s. The vintage cars are super hard to find now at days but all in all at least in regards to the 1984 Sentra it was good times although if I remember correctly the AC didn't work and what it blew was the fan feature of the HVAC system instead

Haha good childhood memories. Old cars have charm even now, but it's amazing how much cars have improved now. Thanks for watching!

Got these in south africa . We got them in manual, 1.6 2t 100hp or the 1.8 3t 110 hp or so odd, let me tell you , once you get these suspensions modded and refreshed. with side droughts , webber carbs a camshaft upgrade and a decent header , you looking at a true 100 wkw rear wheel drive corolla that weighs 900 kgs or less . It's a very involving car . Gotta have a manual . Fun factor is Definitely there .
@SnowWhiteMR2

I'm sure it would be a v different car. Completely agree on having a manual! Thanks for watching!

This car was my first car in high school by in the late 80's. It was a great little car. Mine was a 2 door, 5-speed manual with a dark metallic blue factory paint job. Going by the color of the interior of your car (which was similar, if not the same as mine) I suspect that your car was originally metallic blue too. Your should try buffing out some of the oxidation to see what color is underneath the oxidation. To answer your question(s), yes the ignition buzzer it suppose to sound like that. Mine sounded like that back in the days. The clunking noise is most likely either the engine mounts failing, and part of the engine hitting the frame, or the struts failing. This car was only 75 horsepowers from the factory, but it was very peppy and accelerated pretty quickly back in the days, especially with the 5-speed tranny. I remember I could even get tire chirp shifting from first to second gear, and burn outs were pretty easy because the rear end was so light. I am not sure about this, but the gearbox in my car was extremely noisy, especially in second gear, so it could be that the 5-speed version of the transmission had straight cut gears. As for the suspension, this car was the predecessor to the AE86 (same front engine, rear wheel drive set up) so you'll find that the tail slides out really easily. If you have the 3TC 1.8 liter RWD drive version of this car, I strongly suggest you get a good set of tires or you you could spin out quick easily if you take a curve too aggressively. Although it may seem under powered, the car is very light weight so the power to weight ratio is comparable to modern economy cars with 150+ hp. Lastly, I remember back in the days, there were some aftermarket parts for this car; mostly aero parts like chin spoilers (they called them front bumper dams back then) and over fenders so you can put on fatter tires. There isn't too much you can do with the 3TC engine, although there are some who have turbo'd it, but a 3 speed auto (not a 4 speed) would get shredded by any kind of added power. Even the clutch on the 5-speed version was very weak because the surface area was so small. Keep it original, but at the same time you should restore paint. But most of all, enjoy it. I personally hate modern Toyotas, but the old ones were great!

You must have very good memories of that little car! I just bought one with the same engine and the same five-speed manual transmission, two doors, light blue, incredibly rare here in Argentina. Although it has a long way to go for restoration, I am very eager to have it ready as I want, I would like to do some laps on the circuit as well as drift! By any chance do you know approximately how many horsepower the gearbox can handle?

1.8 3tc pushrod hemi is GOD, leave it or build it lots of north american support. Steering box is whatevers it has its secrets and it uses gear oil if not P/S, ae86 chassis stuff 99% bolt in, weather seals corner lights and random bits can be found new on fleabay or similar outlets, its very light so any bad tires or under chassis/drivetrain misc parts will be immediately felt and it is generally terrifying over 65mph. With that being said I daily my 81 Corolla around Socal and many roadtrips with 575k miles. Does well in the mountains after a rockauto treatment.

"Steering box is whatevers it has its secrets" lol. This sounds about right. I've heard a lot of AE86 parts bolt right up, pretty cool! The car feels like a great cruiser for PCH if refreshed. Can't wait to drive this thing again! Thanks for watching!

@@SnowWhiteMR2 yes and no, they’re not entirely bolt it. For the most parts front suspension is but gives you camber, but we’ll worth the upgrade. These have solid rotors vs ae86 having vented rotors. Sedans don’t have rear sway bar too. But most of it is bolt on
